Gnomes have a penchant for befriending, and in some cases, domesticating, numerous woodland critters.
While rabbits, squirrels, and even slugs are common sights in some countries, tamed grasshoppers (and crickets) are a rarer occurrence, but still quite helpful.
First off, a quick biology lesson. Gnomes can equal luck working with the insects, but grasshoppers usually do their work in the day, while the cricket families stay up at night. Due to the variety of sizes, colors, and temperaments, the tasks of one creature can be duplicated by the other.

Grasshoppers were originally tamed to handle wild underbrush around a gnome's home. Crickets were used in maintaining gnomish agriculture, learning to not each the crops and focus one weeds, fungus, and small nighttime insect pests to the fields.
Both creatures are musically talented, and it's not surprise to see wealthier gnomes assemble an orchestra of them. Not only are they talented creating "chirping songs" with their legs, they're actually quite proficient in many musical instruments.
Only the most foolish of the gnomes would attempt to make either creature a steed to ride/leap or fly upon.
