#RPGaDay2023 - Day 1 - First RPG Played This Year

Welcome to Day 1 of #RPGaDay2023. Our goal here is to sing praises to the RPG hobby, even if things don't always go the ways  I wanted.

For each day I'll be answering the question provided, and for fun, review how I answered a similar question during #RPGaDay a decade ago.  Scout's Honor, I have not peaked at the older answer.

Day 1's prompt is pretty simple, "First RPG Played This Year."

Pretty simple, Gamma World 4th Edition.

My 99-cent 1st or 2nd Edition referee screen from Kay-Bee Toys in the early 90s is my default GW pic

After over 100-episodes of my Star Wars D6 campaign, I needed a palette cleanser for my GMing. After a few random conversations about post-apocalyptic themes, Metamorphosis Alpha, and actual Gamma World, we started up a game using the 4th Edition of the game, which is very proto-D&D 3E at times, and equally 70's convoluted at others.   We've completed one published module, one post-apocalyptic Renaissance Fair, and are starting going through my Kickstarter catalog of odd swag, and I don't see anything letting up quite yet.

Or they could all shoot themselves in the face trying to figure out how a death ray works.

The De Facto Explorers, consisting of Purestrain Human Lathar, Talking Sunflower and scientist, Sonny,  Sneaky Pete the Mutant Weasel and his cohort Mutant Worm Squiggles, plus Ramsey the Mutant Sheep are currently in for a load of surprises in the Hisser village of Notex.  Just don't ask where their knowledge of the "Ancients" comes from.

Ten Years Ago Today:   The first-ever question for #RPGaDay was actually about my "First RPG" Played, ever!

In my ramblings, I covered how my first exposure to RPGs was a GM-led reading of the Car Wars book Battle Road by my friend Charles during the Middle School model club.

First group game I played was Paranoia during an end of the school year party at our friend George's.

  1. Nice! I always enjoyed Gamma World and really should spend some time with all the editions one day. Looking forward to seeing what you do all month!
