#RPGaDay2023 - Day 2 - First RPG Gamemaster

Onto Day 2 of #RPGaDay2023. One day of promoting role-playing games down, thirty more to go!

For each day I'll be answering the question provided, and for fun, review how I answered a similar question during #RPGaDay a decade ago.  Scout's Honor, I have not peeked at the older answer.

Day 2's prompt is "First RPG Gamemaster"

In my ten-year retrospective from Day 1, I mentioned my friend Charles running me through my first pseudo-RPG, as well as the large group game of Paranoia later.   However, my cousin Ben factors in the equation somehow.

Between my session of Battle Road and my Paranoia game, I picked up the classic D&D Menzter "Red Box" Basic Set, and somewhere on the timeline I picked up a copy of B1-9 In Search of Adventure

My cousins from Maine were visiting from Maine, and in the midst of an absolutely miserably rainy Summer week, Ben ran me through Castle Caldwell and the crypt below, actually explaining rules as I murdered everything with my three fighter party (save the Chaotic priestess, I let her go for some odd reason).

Ten Years Ago Retrospective:  Day 2 of #RPGaDay from a decade ago was actually "First RPG Gamemastered"   I wrote all about my Temple of Elemental Evil AD&D game I ran, until I realized I ran a 1-on-1 game for a kid named Paul using Gygar's Castle from the Red Box.  I can probably blame Ben for inspiring me to run that, even if things didn't work out.

  1. Nice! Wonder what happened to that Chaotic Princess you let go? Might be fun to revisit that bit of childhood mischief.

    1. Alas, I'm much better at tying up loose ends like that nowadays, so I'll give my cousin a break back then.

The three fighters were the basis for three noble lines I still use in my fantasy campaign to this day, and as we'll find out later this month, the owners Castle Caldwell change frequently, and none of them perform any upkeep or security on the premises.
