Favorite Movie of Each Year in the 80's

I saw this repeatedly online figured I’d take a crack at it.  I actually grabbed some traction on social media, so I'm posting it here.

Pretty controversial, but I think it explains so so much about my GMing Style

Small rant about using "Tiny".  For something that I feel should be compact, low-key, and possibly minimalist, why to all the "Tiny" labelled products seem overblown, slowly getting expansive, and expensive to boot.    Tiny Cyberpunk in my head brings up an expanded version of TWERPS CyberD.U.D.E.S, not a $45 book.

#RPGaDay2026 - Day 27 - "Hunger"

Day 27 of #RPGaDay and I'm running on fumes.

Perhaps I should have had my players order my rations for the week, to supplicant the "Hunger" I'm looking for.

For the RPG community, one of the most epic stories has always been "Eric and the Dread Gazebo."   Immortalized in print by Knights of the Dinner Table, the classic tale of players not knowing everything, whether its in the book or in real life, can be quite amusing.

When I brought forth today's prompt to my Monday night players, the immediately went with "The Mead Story"

I don't know the source anymore, perhaps a wacky letter in Dragon Magazine but I know I'm not the originator of it, but it goes like this:

New campaign, new characters, definitely new players, who might have cracked open a Player's Handbook truly for the first time.  With a lot of handwaving to encumbrance and basic equipment, there's always a moment for a DM to officially question if the party had 500' foot of rope between them, or or gallon bucket of bat guano, or eight 10-foot poles, and food is always the easiest to call out.

For us, and many other, rations are a rolling commodity: if you bought two weeks of rations, we essentially say you resupply when necessary, unless we deal with some underground adventure, or lost at sea, or something similar where food will dwindle.   My friends who borrowed my campaign world kept the same liberal worldview.

The gist of the story is, the party reaches some point where character sheet bookkeeping is required for some reason.  Every one in a while a character is caught off guard, and the others usually share.

And then there's the one player:  Oh, I'm fine I brought 15 days worth.

Fifteen days? Fifteen days of what perchance?

Mead.

You bought 15 days of mead?   Just mead?

Yeah, I figured it was per day and I know we don't follow encumbrance, but it didn't seem to take up much space.

You're adventuring and surviving on 15 days worth of mead?

Sure!  Is there something wrong?

Do you what mead is???

Gemini

**** There is a practical discussion as to what mead actually is.  The player is enlightened, a little embarrassed, and suddenly very worried.*****

Then.... we never made it here.

What do you mean?

You asked me to get feed for the horses...

Oh no....

I've been feeding them nothing but mead for the last five days we've been in the mountains...

Gemini

I know there's a mention of the mead story back in the RPGaDay2016 posts, but nothing that's happened to me directly.

Any guidance to the origin to the story would be appreciated.

Alternate Question:  What do you hunger for most from a session?

The Gnome of Ecstasy #InternationalGnomeWeek

When gnomes hit the BBC, it's either a crazy old lady in a cottage... or it's drugs.

"Officers in the southern Netherlands have found a garden gnome weighing nearly 2kg (4lb) and made of the drug MDMA.  "Drugs appear in many shapes and sizes, but every now and then we come across special things," Dongemond Police said in a translated social media post.

The gnome was found among suspected narcotics during a large drug search.

"In itself a strange place to keep your garden gnome," the force said. "That's why we decided to test [it] for narcotics".

"The gnome himself was visibly startled," police said, referring to the gnome having its hands covering its mouth....

MDMA - which is an illegal substance in the Netherlands - is a synthetic party drug also known as ecstasy."

That's a double-over redundancy... all gnomes are ecstasy!

Mepacon 50 This Weekend

If everything goes according to plan, I'll be on the Pennsylvania Turnpike with my daughter, Maja, on our way to Mepacon 50, all weekend, at the Delta Hotels Allentown Lehigh Valley at 7736 Adrienne Dr., Breinigsville, PA 18031

Let me tell you, it has NOT been easy getting the finishing touches on my events.  Granted, they're all events I've run at conventions before, to fit the "Golden Jubilee" Theme.

Here's my events for the weekend again.

Friday 4:00pm - Burning Plastic:  The game of green army men posing as easily exploding robots!

Friday 7:30-8:30 -  Drink with the Viscount at the hotel bar.

Friday 9:00pm -  Talislanta "The Crystle Dungeon"  - The first game I ever GM'ed (March 1991, Lehicon IV). It's been difficult to NOT upgrade it, but I'll let it run it's course.

Saturday 10am - Burning Plastic

Saturday 2pm  - My Little Pony - Tails of Equestria RPG

Saturday 4pm  - My Little Pony - Tails of Equestria RPG

Saturday 6pm - The Raffle, The Auction... or I might just pass out in the car.

Saturday 8pm - TOON - Cthulhu Comes to Springfield... Krusty the Kultist.

(Painting) Dinks (Vellori Cult) from Battle Valor Games

I've previously painted up some the "Vellori Cult" Troopers from Battle Valor in the style of a somewhat popular movie franchise.  I realized during the process that the figures bear a closer resemblance to the Dinkfrom Spaceballs!

Queue some Deco Art Rich Espresso Metallic Paint, and I didn't have to break out glitter....

SCI-FI 36B Aliens "Vellori Cult" Troopers
Now, how they got from the moon of Vega to Death Planet Iota is anyone's guess....

In the Queue - Mummies, Teddy Bears, and a full cantina of characters I'll paint and present collectively.

Project: 350 - Post #CharacterCreationChallenge swelling, up to 451 (284/167)  from 439 (283/156).  I finally added some holiday filler, a few entries into next year's #CCC.

(Kickstarter) War Pigs: A GMless TTRPG of Chaos and Goblins by Caroline from Side Quest #ZineQuest

Over the last years, February has meant the glut of small and smaller press books on crowdfunding in celebration of #Zinquest.  I'll admit I've been distracted by the #RPGCampaignToolChallenge , but in my review of the first eleven days of the camapign, there's not much on Kickstarter that interests me, or even gets to motivated something cool.

Luckily War Pig: A GM-less TTRPG of Chaos and Goblins has stopped that pattern.

WAR PIGS is a chaotic, two-stat GMless TTRPG about goblins navigating through elvish enemy lines to get back to their own army base. It's based on Honey Heist, Nine Goblins, and a whole lot of goblin jokes.
U are goblins in an army of goblins. U ride into battle on your greatest weapon... WAR PIGS.

Your Best Friend Is Your Game Store Shopkeeper

It is Cold Wars weekend.  Amongst the twenty or so vendors there in the Lampeter, I would hope this conversation happens in English.

The translation of the cartoon is "Your friend Robert Villepreux came yesterday. It is my duty to inform you that he has ordered two infantry regiments and three motorized assault divisions."

What a good guy!

(Risus) - Viper! - Hostile Environment Trooper - #CharacterCreationChallenge

I saw this AI rendering on a GI Joe group and knew it needed to be statted out for the last day of the #CharacterCreationChallenge

Zee Viper

Enthusiastic Pane Polisher (4)
Daring Dangler of Fenestral Clarity (3)
Vindow Dressing (2)
Retired Sewer Worker (1)

Zee Viper strikes the heart in royalty, but probably was lumped together in a COBRA! recruitment drive.  More can be found on the Animaniacs Fandom page.  Alas I can't find a safe link to the end of that episode.

Don't laugh too much, somebody kitbashed Zee Viper as an actual action figure here.

(GURPS) Margarita Bear #CharacterCreationChallenge *ALL AI*

This is my fifth year of the #CharacterCreationChallenge, and I'll admit it.

I use AI sometimes.

*GASP*

*Silence....*

I've used it to flesh out backstories, roll up stats.  Obviously the artwork for many of these are generated, for better or for worse, through NightCafe.  Heck, on Day 23 I just admitted I asked it what system I should use to make a character of the Christmas Dragon... and not only did it recommend Magical Kitties Save the Day, but I bought pdfs of the 1st and 2nd edition of the rules, so I haven't completely succumbed to SkyNet's desire destroy art in society first before completely crushing humanity.

This one's a little different.

I'm not sure what corner of social media I pulled this off of.  Don't know the artist.  But I simply asked ChatGPT to stat out a Margarita Bear for an RPG (no other specifics or directions), and the damn system generated stats for just GURPS, like there was no other alternative.

Back in the 90's when I worked behind the counter at a couple game shops, there were two types of the GURPS customers.  The ones who loved the richness of the sourcebooks... and the guys who could crunch the GURPS Vehicle numbers in their head, then told me uncomfortable stories about their campaign with three other players, all of whom I questioned if they were real or not.

ChatGPT pumping out humor-filled GURPS stats for Care Bears?  It feels dirty, but if this is accurate for 4th edition, it's also a solid baseline for other characters that I would not have originally looked at.

Margarita Bear

Gear

  • Magical Belly Badge (Built-in)
  • Margarita glass that never empties (Accessory, minor plot device)

  • Often confused by more serious adventurers but beloved by NPCs.
  • Occasionally goes on tangents about "Margarita Diplomacy" and the unifying power of beach vibes.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The funny thing is, we did stat out "Huggy Bear" for our Risus - Illuminati University years ago.

(Magical Kitties Save the Day) "Thither" the Christmas Ice Dragon #CharacterCreationChallenge

There are always those minis that I paint up and then ask, "What am I going to do with this?"

For a few of them I asked ChatGPT.  A lot of basic answers with generic systems, but the last one kickstarted my brain... and opened my wallet.

5. Magical Kitties Save the Day – Yes, really.

  • Why it's great: This is a system about magical talking animals helping people while dealing with silly problems. It could easily be reskinned for a Tiny Christmas Dragon. Replace “Kitties” with “Miniature Winter Dragon,” give it a few powers (snow breath, twinkling wings, candy cane bite), and roll with it.

  • Tone match: Kid-friendly, fun for quick storytelling.

Holy crap!

A quick visit to Atlas Games netted me the pdf copy of the current rules, plus the fabulous 1st edition pdf for only five bucks more.

"Thither"  - White Christmas Dragon

Tagline: "Let's sleigh this problem... then, hot cocoa.

Attributes:

Cute:       1
Cunning: 3
Fierce:    2

Kitty Type: Magical Creature

Powers:

1.  Snowball Barrage (Zap)

  • You can throw little snowballs as a magical ranged attack.
  • Can be used to attack, or knock small objects over.  Snowballs do melt normally with heat.
  • Mechanically: You have a magical zap attack, 1 damage, can be used at range.

2.   Flight  (Flight)

  • Thither can zoom through the air, usually unnoticed by the unsuspecting humans.
  • Mechanically: Can carry as much flying as they can when moving on the ground.

3.   Snow Swirl (Frost Breath)

  • Can exhale a blast of cold air, enough to move/knock over small items, or freeze liquid.
  • Mechanically: Use to lift, push, or fight with super strength.

Talent:  "Can fly better than most birds!"

Thither not only flies, but their wings let them zip around the neighborhood rooftops and snowdrifts with style and agility far better than crawling/scurrying around.  Thither gets a bonus to movement or flight-based challenges.

Flaw:

"Gets distracted by shiny things and cocoa."
You're a tiny magical dragon, not a focused hero. If someone jingles a bell or makes cocoa… you're gone.

Human:

Ellie, 8, who thinks Thither is her Christmas Wish come true. Of course, no one else believes her that a tiny dragon is living on a ledge under the basement steps, but they humor her.  She's depressed that other kids in the neighborhood are bullies.  She's happy to stay inside inside and read, but Thither has other plans.

Home: Thither's lair is a cozy shoebox-sized nest under the steps, perfectly concealed by the piles of junk her parents have stowed away and never look at.  It's decorated with stolen tinsel and ornaments, and some candy cane packaging.

Living with a Non-Gamer Spouse

Another Monday, another game night with the crew.  I've been blessed to keep my Monday nights pretty consistent that we play something 40-45 weeks out of the year.  It's a lot cheaper than a poker night, and I get to see my friends who live in four different states on a regular basis.

All five in the current group have non-gamer spouses (ex in my case).  Thankfully Monday Night Football has been a bigger reason for guys not making it from time to time then the spouses scheduling something.
