After 37 other Kickstarters, the good folks at Macrocosm kept things oddly simple for their latest Kickstarter, Space Dwarves.
Two leaders, two mourning space dwarves with a tombstone, and a random mercenary dwarf.
It's not the most affordable campaign, and after years of eating the Royal Mail costs, they've finally upped the shipping from the UK. I'll still bite.
There are those games that raise up my hope in the world, and let it crash down upon my soul.
The 25th Anniversary Edition of Hackmaster, now on Kickstarter from Kenzer and Company, is exactly what I expected, and I should not complain in the least.
The original 4th Edition, actually licensed from the world of D&D/AD&D was my salvation from artsy-fartsy game concepts I was brewing in my head. It was my game of choice for the early 2000's with epic tales that some of us just talked about last night, including The Journey of Mutumbo and, of course, Burning Trogs Rule!. A few items have have been sold off as needed plunder, but it still holds a key spot on my shelf, within arms reach, just in case someone summons the call.
With the license expiring, they removed most of the parody elements, and refined the rules for a completely different 5th Edition in 2009. While some of the elements from their Aces & Eights western rules (most excellent) migrated over, marriage, kids, and life in general never got me into that set, or the investment for the beautiful books.
Disclaimer: The 25th Anniversary edition is a refinement on the 2009 game. It's now expanded into a four-book set: The Player's Character Codex, The Player's Guide to Adventuring, a single volume of the Hacklopedia of Beasts, and, of course, the GameMaster's Guide.
Would I like all four volumes being so triumphant on my bookcase that I would have to buy a new one worthy of their glory? Sure! But as I will probably lament during #RPGaDay2026 in a few days, if I do full-on fantasy, "getting the band back together," it would be 4th edition, all the chuckles and clunky rules on display.
I am, however, interested in the add-ons, so I pledged the $5 tier, hoping to overspend once pricing becomes available: The Hackmaster dice bag ($20) , the official pin ($20) , the set of d10,000 for critical hits ($15), and the one thing that intrigues me, Gary Jackson's Power Dice. ($20)
Nostalgia might make me wish I just went with the new edition....
As I always mention, Macrocosm is my favorite, perhaps only, manufacturer I trust from that side of the pond. Large or small, I have a great track record getting my rewards safely to Pennsylvania.
Why paraphrase when you can read the words of Lon himself:
With this Kickstarter, we are starting a new range for China mainly covering the period of 1910-early 1930's. We have centered the range around the U.S. Navy Yangtze River Patrol and their Chinese antagonists. We believe you will love this first wave of USN and Chinese models. The models are larger 28mm and a medium heft, perfect for easy painting. Note that the Chinese are scaled smaller than the USN as that was reality.
And there's an option for a rickshaw with different drivers and passengers!
Over a decade since the original book came out, East Texas University finally gets an update, both to the material, as well as an upgrade to the latest edition of Savage Worlds with East Texas University: Fresh Blood.
From the Kickstarter itself:
Study. Party. Fight evil. So what is ETU? East Texas University is a college horror setting for the Savage Worlds roleplaying game. It takes place at a small but renowned college in the fantastic Southern climate of Pinebox, Texas. Pinebox has been the epicenter of supernatural disturbances for generations. But nobody really believes in that stuff, so students still flock to ETU thanks to generous scholarships, prestigious courses, and the active social scene…even if not everyone survives their college experience. Players must contend with annoying roommates, murderous professors, and things that go bump in the night...all while trying to maintain good grades and graduate! Enroll at your own risk. The original East Texas University released in 2014 for Savage Worlds Explorer's Edition. Savage Worlds has evolved since then to the Adventure Edition (SWADE), so now ETU is offering a refresher course!
While I haven't played the original in its original form, I have used the plethora of adventures for 20-year old Illuminati University (IOU) game, and the ones I haven't been able to use would make great material for multiple themes of strangeness and horror.
There's not much that's been tickling my fancy on Kickstarter recently. This doesn't hit many of my buttons either, but Idols of the Neon Dark: A D&D 5e K-Pop Adventure and Setting does that the tropes of something recently popular and puts them in an easily digestible form of Dungeons and Dragons.
...and let's be honest, the music you can play in the background is pretty addictive.
Another quick and fun Kickstarter by Macrocosm, Monsters and Hunters is a small collection of monsters and some sci-fi hunters to track them down.
Monsters
I went with the complete bundle with 2 monsters, 2 hunters, and a swarm, with shipping across the pond, it will be roughly US$35 with shipping across the pond.
Hunters
With delivery scheduled for April (and Macrocosm is great on their delivery dates), these might kick-off a continuation of our Death Planet Iota Fistful of Lead game.
Another great entry from BackerKit's #ZineTopia2026 is Food & Evil, the tabletop roleplaying game where you don’t hunt demons…you are the demons. Your party runs a food truck, serves questionable cuisine, gathers cursed ingredients, and causes just enough chaos to keep business booming.
With the lack of #Zinequest projects hitting my personal demographic, I ventured over to Backerkit to find their own February promotion, #Zinetopia2026
There's a little more hope in the universe.
Space Cats is a fun RPG where everyone is playing a crew of curious space adventurers, flying across the universe, taking jobs everywhere trying to pay off a monumental debt.
And yest, not everyone is cat... but it doesn't mean they can't be....
Over the last years, February has meant the glut of small and smaller press books on crowdfunding in celebration of #Zinquest. I'll admit I've been distracted by the #RPGCampaignToolChallenge , but in my review of the first eleven days of the camapign, there's not much on Kickstarter that interests me, or even gets to motivated something cool.
WAR PIGS is a chaotic, two-stat GMless TTRPG about goblins navigating through elvish enemy lines to get back to their own army base. It's based on Honey Heist, Nine Goblins, and a whole lot of goblin jokes. U are goblins in an army of goblins. U ride into battle on your greatest weapon... WAR PIGS.
DAMNIT (Dwarven Assault, Mining, Neutralization, and Interception Teams) are the elite teams handling security on the galactic frontier. As a man who loves space dwarves (even if I convert them to the realm of Gnomish Space Marines), DAMNIT is a great RPG system. I have it keyed up as my back-up to my Monday night Gamma World campaign.
I'm certain the Starbeards! version is taking full advantage of the Savage Worlds system (as I type this they've met their initial goal and have raised half the money in a day that original DAMNIT raised in a month.
I'll be honest, December has been a large pile of suck. A handful of job interviews, a larger pile of rejections for mostly "filler" positions, and a LOT of driving to see the kids up in Albany. There's a moment in those drives where the Spotify playlist just soothes my black heart and fractured soul.
Additional bummers?
No children around this year helping me make my Kjottbollar (Swedish Meathballs) and Limpa and other breads.
Nobody coming over Christmas Eve for dinner (Christmas Eve is always the superior holiday to Christmas Day), then me transporting them back to their Mother after pancakes Christmas.
Christmas Eve: With my sister visiting her in-laws in the Great White North this year, I packed up the food and drove down to Easton to visit my mother. I took care of stuff around the house, ran her errands, including a trip to Wal-Mart I never thought I'd return from, and we ate. Basic. Simple. She enjoyed the food but did NOT have a good day. Sixty years of smoking have caught up like gangbusters.
We didn't exchange gifts, but one arrived when I got home on the perfect day to count it as one.
Palladium had a Kickstarter for a new, expanded edition of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Other Strangeness. Two years later, eight months late, and a $25 flat shipping charge for the core book, my copy of the rules arrived two days earlier than projected. Trust me, I'm well aware of Palladium as a whole, and their Kickstarter history, so I'm not surprised, just miffed enough. But it's in my hands, and if that's not a Christmas miracle, nothing is.
Early Christmas morning, I recovered from a night of full-strength egg nog, and trekked the three and a half hour drive to see the kids, with a cooler full of bread and meatballs, two stockings, and a single wrapped gift.
I almost miss those early days of K-Mart/Wal-Mart Layaway, paying off the balance, and figuring out the logistics of it all. Most of it nowadays is Ulta, Sephora, and Barnes & Noble, so most of it fits in the stocking.
Paints. I had specifically requested Citadel Seraphim Sepia wash, since I recently had an accident with one of the older, big bottles, and could not find it in stock at the last four stores I frequented. They actually have a Warhammer store within twenty minutes, and every was on stock (and allegedly on sale... although thirty-five years of history might bias be on believing that claim from the girls.
Not one for just getting an $8 jar of paint, they also got me
Zandri Dust - A Desert-y Tomb Kings color. I'm half-tempted to use it on my American Teddy Bears.
Mournfang Brown (Air-brush sized pot) - Brown is my favorite painting color, in all its shades, so I'll try it out. A little miffed the GW guys didn't question them (a simple "Do you have an airbrush machine?") but perhaps that is gatekeeping... from the hobby or the profit margin.
Nihilakh Oxide - A Necron corrosion color. All of the paints I can certainly use. (Michael's has been rubbish this past year, and they are strongly anti-Hobby Lobby, so I can't expect other sources.)
Christmas Playing Cards - When we played our Christmas Game this year, I mentioned my displeasure with the Gilded/Pulp style playing cards we were using for Fistful of Lead. Millie took that to heart and got me "Home for the Holidays" Bicycle deck. Very clean, gently themed... and guaranteed to be used for the Christmas games in the future, and hopefully more.
Glitter Ducks - We certainly had a bit of a duck theme this year (with one more discovered and added t other painting queue, see one of next year's posts for that one. Apparently I missed the Glitter Quacks at Five Below, but Millie did not. They're cute, plentiful, and after discovering Fishing28, I'm certain we can make a Duckin' 28 game. Worst case I'll collaborate with the young lady running a larger scale duck game at HMGS/Historicon.
Oh, and despite me packing a tote-full of games, we kept ourselves busy (and bruised) playing Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizaa repeatedly.
Outside of grabbing another copy of A Place for All My Books for my sister and husband after their return to Canada, I'm satisfied with my haul....
Scratch that, despite the distance and irregularity of my visits, my Dad Christmas List has never changed.
Underwear
Gold Toe Socks
Undershirts
My undershirts have held up, I just got replacement socks last year (and not moment too soon, as the older pairs are disintegrating.
I did not get my underwear (and I wanted a smaller size to boot after all these years! Huzzah!). Time to venture forth into the retail wasteland after our ice storm is finally cleared up for a pack of two.
(They did through a gift card in my stocking for said underwear... I just felt like ranting).
Why a 2nd Edition? First off, physical copies have been out of print for DECADES, so long that even I broke down and bought a PDF copy recently (The was surely a sign of the apocalypse, or all I needed to do years ago to get this moving.... hmmm.)
Seriously a new in-print version is great, streamlined character creation and rules that are so easy you can let your six-year old play without coddling or hand waving, because action and fun trump Ocean's Eleven plotting any day... and even if things go south, you don't die, you "Fall Down" and can show up in the next scene.
Back a lifetime ago, when Sigmar was barely a whisper said by players who knew way too much lore, I wanted to build a certain rat army. And to be honest, those mid-90's boxed sets were just the pinnacle of eye candy to draw people into the hobby. Alas, as I researched things, I became more and more despondent, because to build an decent army beyond all the (literal) bells and whistles, I needed decent troop levies that weren't from the $10 plastic boxes. And "Stormrats" and "Rat Slaves" in pewter purchased two to a pack were prohibitively expensive.
Thankfully I got some actual play with some figures during the Mordheim years, but they hold a special place in my heart.
So you can understand the warmth in my heart as I see the Kickstarter for Rat Storm Rising by Curtis Fell. Thirteen classically styled rats in 28mm cast in resin, that can be swapped out as you need them.
I supported two of Curtis' Space Dwarf Kickstarters, and although they're still sitting in the "lead pile" they're exactly what I wanted and at the right price.
Fainting Goat Games has already unleashed Cocaine Owlbear onto the world. They've now expanded it with the Cocaine Owlbear Holiday Special, now on Backerkit.
From the campaign:
The Pitch You were just a regular woodland critter… until you mauled a courier carrying enchanted magical cocaine.
Now you’re self-aware, supercharged, and addicted. BUT - You and your feral forest friends need one last hit of that sweet, enchanted powder to stay sentient.
In the courier's bag, you find a map to the main stash! Unfortunately, it’s being stored in the most secure compound at the North Pole.
Good news: you’ve got claws, antlers, bad ideas, and a plan that requires precise execution Bad News: You're a goddamned coked up owlbear (or woodland creature) with rage issues.
