As the man who's running the Gnome Joust at Historicon this year (and won the Cold Wars Joust this past March), I don't think I need to state that I love the event.
The gnome mounts, the hand-painted jousting cloths, the simplified version of To Cry a Joust for rules. All great stuff.
But I also notice the folks at Skull and Crown ran a joust at Kublacon using their 54mm mdf knights and their own jousting rules, Breaking Lances.
The 54mm joust does look totally sweet, but looking at the rows of jousts, I noticed the cloth was unmarked and there were no rulers/tape measures.
I finally noticed the distance between posts for the rail (the tilt) were the same size as the figure bases. Simple yet genius.
While the jousting cloth is part of the charm of the Gnome Joust, the tilt is largely discarded after the first round because it's falling over/getting in the way. If the posts on the tilt are spaced out like a uniform base for Gnome cavalry, you could imagine a color-coded system on each post.
Black = "Failure to Launch"
Yellow = +1
Green = +2
Paint the same pattern in a mirror image and voila, figures and fence are all you need to play anywhere.
Breaking Lances is planned on getting launched as a Kickstarter this fall.
I also found some adorable mdf sheep on the the Skull and Crown webstore:
