(Kickstarter) The Landing: Gallipoli 1915 by Catastrophe Games

I've dipped my toe in solo games on Kickstarter before, with mixed results.  Usually the print-and-play pledge level is cheap enough that I can support the game, regardless of the end product's quality.

Catastrophe Games has launched a Kickstarter for The Landing: Gallipoli 1915, a solo game where you play an ANZAC NCO, leading his troops from the amphibious assault further inland.
The print and play edition is $10, while the full game is $25 plus shipping.  A little steep for only solo capability, but I'll keep a close eye and see if the campaign succeeds, or needs a little boost at the end.

(Review) Big Bloody Balkan Battles

Bloody Big Balkan Battles! is perhaps the one item on Brigade Games' e-mailing list that has actually caught my eye.

I have an interest in the "little-known" wars that are ignored, and the Balkans definitely fit the bill.  To find a collection of history and scenario in 68 pages surprised me greatly, even for 25 bucks.

Disclaimer: I don't play Bloody Big Battles, but the fact that they dedicate pages of this book for manufacturers of Balkan figs from 2-3mm up to "Historic" 30mm means the book is far more valuable to a larger, if still niche, group.

Besides an a twelve page historical overview of all the conflicts lumped into the Balkan Wars, and some of the major characters leading the armies, there are TONS of scenarios.

One page is given to each side for the Order of Battle. An incredibly dense sidebar covers unique scenario rules set-up, victory conditions and even other options to run variants of the battle.  Since I'm not an expert on the Balkans, I can only say the author appears to have great knowledge on the subject and has relayed the information into understandable encounters.

The maps appear to be largely set up in 4'x 6' grids, sometimes larger..  For 2mm up to 10mm, I can believe you can cram enough figures and terrain on the board, but 15mm+, with these Orders of Battle, the troop ratio must be large enough to allow maneuverability.... or perhaps the maps presented can be broken down in two or three maps for still large-scale skirmishes.  Heck, I could imagine some of the scenarios broken down into min-campaigns.  Some of those alleged square feet have four villages in them!

Heck, thinking of this as a supplement to my current Great War era interests (Gnome Wars), I could very well see multiple skirmish+ level games breaking out and their collected results would determine the winner of the scenario.

The bibliography appears very solid, and I have a few new reading selections to look out for.

With tons of scenarios, lots of historical overview, and a well organized, put-together book, on the Gaming with the Gnomies Five Gnome rating system, Big Bloody Balkan Battles earns four and a half gnomes out of five.
It has the potential for being far superior from what is presented, but it will require a bit of work to be properly used for my Gnome Wars games (but it will be better than another ambush scenario or raid on the brewery).  Big Bloody Balkan Battles is available in print and pdf through Brigade Games.

(Review) Lettow Vorbeck by Decision Games

It has been the bugbear of my blogging for months, but I'm happy to say that over this past weekend, I took some time to go over and play Lettow-Vorbeck: East Africa 1914-18, and gosh darn it, I'm disappointed in myself for not making time earlier.

Lettow-Vorbeck is a Mini-game Series game from Decision Games covering the Great War battles in East Africa from 1914 to 1918.  It's a mid-sized zip lock game with only four pages of rules, one sheet of chits and and 11" x 17" map to play on.

The rules system is from Decisions the Hand of Destiny series of rules and it looks ridiculously simple.  While the single stat on a unit's chit helps determine combat resolution, all other rules are affected by the campaign cards for each side.  Campaign cards are drawn each round an determine reinforcements, movement, and any other special situations which could completely screw up your plan of attack.

Combat focuses on two separate actions:  Tactical Advantage, then the combat resolution.  Tactical advantage is essentially an opposed die role, modified by troop status, terrain, etc.

Combat resolution is rolling a number of d6 equal to the units number.  Results of 4+ may panic some units (unable to attack if they had yet to go) or even eliminate them from the game.   As combat alternates between players one unit at a time, winning initiative allows the first player to attack with their more powerful units and knock the enemy out before they have a chance to counterattack.

With some actual time to sit back and relax, I broke out game and attempted a solitaire run through the scenario playing both the Germans, as well as the British and her Allies.  I had a little confusion as to the definition of turns (individual vs 2-player turns) and misread some pretty obvious rules, but that's player error, not writer/editor error.

In my solitaire run, halfway through the 14-turn game, the Germans were in control.  Most British units had been eliminated trying to take the coastal cities and I was wondering what went wrong.

Then the British finally drew back to back campaign cards bringing in their South African reinforcements, followed immediately by the Belgian Congo's introduction to the campaign.  By turn 12 the remaining Germans were surrounded on a mountain smack dab in the middle of the colony.

Overall I'm quite satisfied with the product.  I've never bought any Decision Games products before, and starting with a period piece I had decent familiarity with was a great way to go.

That being said, I would try other games in the Mini-games line.  There are two dozen of them, ranging in price from $9.95 to $12.95.
British reinforcements have finally arrived...
The alternative option I thought of was to use the game map to manage a miniatures campaign, moving the chits and resolving the combats with the miniatures ruleset of your choice.

I know, I'm not the first person in the world to think of that great crossover from chit-based wargames to historical miniatures, but easy to utilize maps of German East Africa aren't usually available in the same distributor catalog as Pathfinder books or Reaper minis.

Overall, in the Gaming with the Gnomies 5-Gnome Rating system, I'm going to give Lettow-Vorbeck 4.5 gnomes.
Plus a half....
Production and play value are exactly what I want in a thirteen dollar game,  My only wish is that a new generation of wargamers become editors of these lines because there are just certain things that a long-time chit wargamer just assumes as right and if I initially misinterpretted them, I worry what a gamer on an impulse buy does with them.  Yes, chit-based wargames aren't usually impulse buys at a FLGS, but $10-13 is pretty close to that demographic.

Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck Online and On the Small Screen

In a world full of political memes and Elf on a Shelf  pictures, my Facebook feed uncovered a decently written overview on Major General Paul Von Lettow-Vorbeck.   It's extremely biased article, even compared to other pro-German articles.  Von-Lettow Vorbeck was no saint compared to modern standards, but compared to his British opponents, he was a far fairer to most of the non-white troops he commanded.

... and in a semi-related topic, who knew he was a character in The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles?

Public Warning of the Horrors of War

One of my cheaper hobbies recently has been to pledge a dollar to certain Kickstarters to get a front row seat to either their incredible success or Hindenburg-like failure.

Horrors of War by Adam Scott Glancy piqued my interest, but with a back-log of CoC product on my shelf already, a $45 softcover price, and ancient history of Pagan Publishing's distribution problems in the back of my mind, I donated a dollar and waited.

The campaign funded, and as expected, Glancy was pulled in thirty different directions on fifteen additional projects.  The estimated delivery date was .... February 2015, and if miracles happened this week, I still don't believe the book would arrive in people's hands until the end of the year, at the earliest.

The dollar does earn me backer communications and updates, and with that was this poster....

Enjoy!

Latest Hinterland Releases for 2016

I've brought up Hinterland Miniatures on the blog before.  Originally females sculpted as Great War German Hussars, the line has expanded considerably.  Pondering a small order, I found some new releases this year, and I'm still trying to pick my jaw up off the floor.

They've expanded the into German Colonial/Great War Africa action... and a female von Lettow Vorbeck.

von Lettow-Vorbeck - Mounted   -  $6.00

von Lettow-Vorbeck - On Foot  -  $3.00

Schutztruppen - Skirmishers -  $13.50

Schutztruppen Camel Corp - $16.00

Celebration Set - $11.00
May need to speed up that order...

Millie's Chupacabra and Schutztruppe Askaris

Since it is finally my daughter Millie's "friend" 5th birthday party, after delays and cancellations, let us celebrate with her first completed miniature, yet another Chupacabra mini from Brigade Games.
As is right and proper with the second child, I rushed her through drybrushing technique, but I was eternally grateful for her choice of flocking as there's a clump of sand on the back leg of the figure that I applied.   With the bushes, no one will know Daddy screwed up.

The whole Chupacabra Family:  (L to R) Maja, Daddy, and Millie
With those dastardly palm trees gone, there's a number of small projects to do, and I've gotten some German Schutztruppe Askari Skirmishing from Brigade Games finished:

Between the late hour, the flourescent lights, and the touch screen of my smart phone going wonky, I still don't know why the pictures all of drained of color.

Halfway through February and I've exceeded my new painting for all of last year!    Now I did refurbish over 200 minis last year and rebased a bunch more, but the fact that my work bench has a dent in the lead pile warms my cold, cold heart.

NEXT:  The next kid's painting session is next Sunday, and their queues are getting to look like mine.  I've looking at Bugbears, wild animals, and a boatload of GNOMES!!!

Cold Wars 2016 PEL is Up!

No one truly knows the status of the Lancaster Host for this upcoming St Patrick's Day weekend, and I'll be at the opposite end of the state then, but that doesn't mean I'm not excited about the PEL for Cold Wars finally getting uploaded!

For all the online worryworts prophetizing doom and gloom, a good number of the normal HMGS GMs have said "Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!"

In fact, I'm a bit miffed with all the games that tickle my fancy.  Next time my wife wants concert tickets, I sit online waiting for hours for them to come available, rather than miss out on the local show and be forced to go to a different location to see it, on a con weekend to boot).

Here's a list of the events that catch my eye.  I'm trying to only list the first slot these games will run.  There may be multiple games of some events run over the course of the weekend.  For a complete list, go to the PEL on HMGS website.

Games Workshop
I recently talked the owner of a new game store in the area (more on that coming soon, I hope.)   He's a unrepetent GW fan and showed an unabashed love for the new stuff that I've not seen from other gamers in store and otherwise.   With GW account minimums and poor discounts by not going direct, it just looks easier to self promote smaller lines with lower costs, better margins.

There's just something about affordable tanks and toy soldiers from $5-10.  Even their historical playsets are 1995 40k priced.    Historicals are truly the way to go for those who want something inexpensive and can be used for hours of fun.  Perhaps that's why I wasn't a wildly successful store manager.  I got all the money I could get out of my customers,  I just did it in a way that generated value for them.

My Top 10 Wargaming Rules

Someone posted their own personal top 10 wargame rules list on TMP, and since all my current endeavours are underway, but not complete, might as well make a neat filler post.

#10 - Blood and Swash - I just played this for the first time at Cold Wars with a western game in the HAWKS room.  Simple number crunching, designed for light (i.e fun) role-playing potential.  I'd be happy to jump into a game of this at a moment's notice.

#9 -  Pig Wars  - Part of my early days of Cold Wars where every game I played in and liked, I bought the rules.  It's still sitting on my shelf, and should I fall upon some figs suitable for the Dark Ages, I'll break it out in a heartbeat.

#8 - The Sword and the Flame - One of those games that, if you can follow the rules, you're welcome at most cons.  I learned this on one of the Duke's tables, with the referee flip flopping on special rules, and ignoring some the basics, but I'm game to play if given the chance.

#7 - Burning Plastic - I'll toot my own horn for my own game (largely Eric T Smith, but I get a nod for writing and decades of promotion.)  Little green army men represent robots and 80% casualty rates are considered tame.  Not to be confused with the home brew set of modern rules created by some school kids in New Jersey in the mid 00's.

#6 - 55 Days at Peking - Boxer Rebellion rules coming from issue #27 of Wargames Illustrated.

#5 - Games Workshop Rules (40K, WFB, Necromunda, Mordheim) -  If you have a hankering for wargaming, the stock simplicity of 40K, WFB and their children will get you in the right direction.  I love the campaign aspect for Mordheim and Necromunda.   The problem with GW is cost and rules escalation (not for your army, but you need to now the minutiae of all the other armies to be competitive.

#4 - Legions of Steel/Planetstorm - Global Games was going in the right direction with the tabletop rules.  Even above the Machine Complexes, Leadership was a well-done concept.  Nothing was overpowered.  And some vehicles were ten pounds of lead!

#3 - Contemptable Little Armies - I've only run it for Samoa, so no trenches, but CLA does a good job representing the chaos of early modern warfare, and can easily be used from turn of the 20th century to leading up to the Second World War.

#2 - Battletech - Yes, the hexes and arbitrary ranges turn people off, but I've played enough that everything is second nature.  The latest Introductory Boxed Set is a steal and I can't wait to finally paint the 'mechs (they're all primed) and acquire some more 6mm units and terrain.

#1 - Gnome Wars/Trench Wars - Surprised, eh?  Gnome Wars is ridiculously influenced by Trench Wars, but there is some deviation in the more complicated material.   Truth be told, even that stuff could be flipped between the two.

Cold Wars 2015 PEL is Up!

Compared to previous years, there was a bit of a delay getting it out, but the Preliminary Event List for Cold Wars 2015 is finally available here.

As a player this time around, I do have the option to look at playing other games, rather than the old standards.  Of course, this doesn't mean you find me anywhere else but the gnome tables, but it's a benefit I don't usually afford myself.

One minor point, before I list the "Games ViscountEric wants to see/play in."    A tiny vocal minority on TMP always harps on the non-historical percentage of games offered at each con and how it should just be eliminated.  I simply implore the reading audience to see just how many non-historical games are listed under a historical monicker (Ancients/Medieval/WW2/etc) and how many games using non-historical figures are recreating an actual battle.

Apples and oranges, my friend.  In the end, we're all fruits!

T-343 - Siege Swein Forkbeard's Castle

The 6th (Poona) Indian Division was tasked with capturing Qurna, the “Garden of Eden” in local tradition. Both armies found it to be more like hell than paradise. (Maybe the forbidden fruit was dates, not apples.)
Knowledge of Command Decision useful but not required; children welcome with a supervising adult
I don't know the itinerary of my group this year, but these two games make taking a half-day and driving down Thursday an option.
