Even the Price of Sheep Are Going Up.

I'll be honest, I haven't purchased from Old Glory since my Samoa Project, and that was 11 years ago.

But before Brigade and now Badger have a huge footprint at the HMGS shows, Old Glory was the anchor vendor at the shows, although I was caught up in needing to order items ahead of time, because my preferences weren't part of the regular travelling inventory.

I've missed most of their online news since COVID, but this week they launch some new  25/28mm figures for their Farm Range.

FAR-05 Sheep
Even though they are nice sheep, I'm still amazed I don't freak out over the $15.00 for four sheep.

Even the lead mutton has gone up in price!

This is an impressive new range of 28+mm Saxons and Normans. Packs start at $18 (Canadian). Units at $150 (that's less than $3 a figure... and it's $3 Canadian)!

My Events for Cold Wars 2020

I got my submission for Cold Wars in under the wire for the Preliminary Event List (PEL!)

Sorry, no Battle of Yellowstone replay to tie in with the Wargaming in Education Program.   Late Winter basketball dies out the weekend of the con, with the finals the next week, so I'll be running the Gnome Joust 8pm Thursday (in Open Gaming) and on the PEL for 8pm Friday.

Friday Night Joust!  - 24 Players
Hear ye, hear ye! All are invited to participate in the grand Friday Night Gnome Joust!!! Rules taught, quick, easy, FUN! PRIZES!!  No one under 10 without a playing adult.

I'll be in the Wargaming in Education group all day, helping out with a Medieval game, and acting as an honest-to-God panelist for the "How Do I Run a Game?" Q&A with interested educators.

Slaying the Furry Dragon... and Maja's First Attempt at Running a Game

Labor Day weekend saw a LOT of recovery time from the craziness of life.  No Day of Sloth picnic.  No Annual IOU game (again!)  I'm rested and feeling better than I have in weeks.  With the busy season at work starting in less than a month, I'm not confident with many of our patchwork systems, but I am confident that we'll overcome any obstacle that I can predict (for now).

The one gaming thing I managed to do was get Maja to set up her Medieval armies she got at Historicon through the Armies for Kids program, sponsored by the H.A.W.K.S.

Chores and homelife distracted us from getting to play immediately, and when we did, the table had been commandeered.

Maja had us set up longways on the table (first rookie mistake) with Houdini the cat as impassable terrain.  Maja nixed the idea that any units the cat knocked over were dead.
Maja's Cavalry got lost in the furry brambles and were trapped.
Since it's Maja's game and Maja's figures, I told her she should run the game, but looking at the handy-dandy reference sheet was probably going to help.

The rules provided with the set are "Milk and Cookie Rules" out of Big Battles for Little Hands.  They're quite serviceable regardless of hand-size, although the reference sheet  is cluttered for anyone, much less a ten-year old.

Still, with our quick battle, Maja learned three important lessons:

  • Don't perseverate on one unit while the rest of your army in languid.
  • If distracted, archers can sneak up on you.
  • Cats move.

If there's a homework-free night, we might go over the rules together and she can set up the reference sheet that she feels is full of the important rules.   I might also loan her my copy of Pig Wars (Skirmish is more her jam, but we'll get both Maja and Dad up to speed on large scale warfare.)

Thoughts on the Gnome Joust... and Sheep.

As the man who's running the Gnome Joust at Historicon this year (and won the Cold Wars Joust this past March), I don't think I need to state that I love the event.

The gnome mounts, the hand-painted jousting cloths, the simplified version of To Cry a Joust for rules.  All great stuff.

But I also notice the folks at Skull and Crown ran a joust at Kublacon using their 54mm mdf knights and their own jousting rules, Breaking Lances.

The 54mm joust does look totally sweet, but looking at the rows of jousts, I noticed the cloth was unmarked and there were no rulers/tape measures.

I finally noticed the distance between posts for the rail (the tilt) were the same size as the figure bases.  Simple yet genius.

While the jousting cloth is part of the charm of the Gnome Joust, the tilt is largely discarded after the first round because it's falling over/getting in the way.  If the posts on the tilt are spaced out like a uniform base for Gnome cavalry, you could imagine a color-coded system on each post.

Black = "Failure to Launch"
Yellow = +1
Green = +2

Paint the same pattern in a mirror image and voila, figures and fence are all you need to play anywhere.

Breaking Lances is planned on getting launched as a Kickstarter this fall.

I also found some adorable mdf sheep on the the Skull and Crown webstore:

(Kickstarter) Vikings: Great Hall Burning

Acheson Creations has launched a new Kickstarter for their Vikings: Great Hall Burning line of rules, terrain, and 28mm figures.
Viking Set #2 - $100 Pledge without the Rulebook
If I managed to find $100 in the street, it would immediately go to Set #2.  It would be a great deal at the MSRP of $125, plus Acheson has stretch goals that are a reasonable reward and reasonable to obtain.

Individual Add-On Items are available through Set pledges (which already provide free shipping)  or the a la carte option at the $10 level for US customers and $30 for the rest of the world.

My Top 10 Wargaming Rules

Someone posted their own personal top 10 wargame rules list on TMP, and since all my current endeavours are underway, but not complete, might as well make a neat filler post.

#10 - Blood and Swash - I just played this for the first time at Cold Wars with a western game in the HAWKS room.  Simple number crunching, designed for light (i.e fun) role-playing potential.  I'd be happy to jump into a game of this at a moment's notice.

#9 -  Pig Wars  - Part of my early days of Cold Wars where every game I played in and liked, I bought the rules.  It's still sitting on my shelf, and should I fall upon some figs suitable for the Dark Ages, I'll break it out in a heartbeat.

#8 - The Sword and the Flame - One of those games that, if you can follow the rules, you're welcome at most cons.  I learned this on one of the Duke's tables, with the referee flip flopping on special rules, and ignoring some the basics, but I'm game to play if given the chance.

#7 - Burning Plastic - I'll toot my own horn for my own game (largely Eric T Smith, but I get a nod for writing and decades of promotion.)  Little green army men represent robots and 80% casualty rates are considered tame.  Not to be confused with the home brew set of modern rules created by some school kids in New Jersey in the mid 00's.

#6 - 55 Days at Peking - Boxer Rebellion rules coming from issue #27 of Wargames Illustrated.

#5 - Games Workshop Rules (40K, WFB, Necromunda, Mordheim) -  If you have a hankering for wargaming, the stock simplicity of 40K, WFB and their children will get you in the right direction.  I love the campaign aspect for Mordheim and Necromunda.   The problem with GW is cost and rules escalation (not for your army, but you need to now the minutiae of all the other armies to be competitive.

#4 - Legions of Steel/Planetstorm - Global Games was going in the right direction with the tabletop rules.  Even above the Machine Complexes, Leadership was a well-done concept.  Nothing was overpowered.  And some vehicles were ten pounds of lead!

#3 - Contemptable Little Armies - I've only run it for Samoa, so no trenches, but CLA does a good job representing the chaos of early modern warfare, and can easily be used from turn of the 20th century to leading up to the Second World War.

#2 - Battletech - Yes, the hexes and arbitrary ranges turn people off, but I've played enough that everything is second nature.  The latest Introductory Boxed Set is a steal and I can't wait to finally paint the 'mechs (they're all primed) and acquire some more 6mm units and terrain.

#1 - Gnome Wars/Trench Wars - Surprised, eh?  Gnome Wars is ridiculously influenced by Trench Wars, but there is some deviation in the more complicated material.   Truth be told, even that stuff could be flipped between the two.

Cold Wars 2015 PEL is Up!

Compared to previous years, there was a bit of a delay getting it out, but the Preliminary Event List for Cold Wars 2015 is finally available here.

As a player this time around, I do have the option to look at playing other games, rather than the old standards.  Of course, this doesn't mean you find me anywhere else but the gnome tables, but it's a benefit I don't usually afford myself.

One minor point, before I list the "Games ViscountEric wants to see/play in."    A tiny vocal minority on TMP always harps on the non-historical percentage of games offered at each con and how it should just be eliminated.  I simply implore the reading audience to see just how many non-historical games are listed under a historical monicker (Ancients/Medieval/WW2/etc) and how many games using non-historical figures are recreating an actual battle.

Apples and oranges, my friend.  In the end, we're all fruits!

(Maybe the forbidden fruit was dates, not apples.)
Knowledge of Command Decision useful but not required; children welcome with a supervising adult
I don't know the itinerary of my group this year, but these two games make taking a half-day and driving down Thursday an option.

Pig Wars 4th Edition Now Available in Print!

I've only ever played in one Medieval/Dark Ages minis game, and that was Pig Wars back at Cold Wars 2002.  I enjoyed it so much, I snagged a copy of the (2nd Edition?) rules at the dealers hall.

Yes, I used to be waaaaaay more impulsive.  Before wives and kids.

Truth be told, I've never played another game of it, although I know it's still sitting in my drawer o' random wargaming books.  That being said, I have no problems celebrating Pig Wars 4th Edition becoming available in print!

From the blurb at Wargame Vault:
Why fight for love? Why fight for money or glory? Why not return to an era when men killed each other for something really valuable: farm animals! Pig Wars, 4th edition is an easy set of miniature rules for man to man combat in the ancient and medieval periods and is intended for individually mounted figures (base size is not important). Suggested unit size is 20 figures for foot and 10 figures for mounted with, in most scenarios, each player commanding 1 unit. Suggested unit compositions for 11th century Norman, Viking, Saxon, Irish, Welsh, Byzantine and Arab commands. The graphics are vastly improved over previous editions with lots of color pictures of nicely painted figures on the table-top. 4 scenarios are included: "Landwaster Commeth" a multi-faction 11th century mix-it -up where each faction has differing objectives. Also included is "Hastings: Last Battle of the Dark Ages", "Romans on the Rhine" a 1st century AD Romans vs Germans fight and (new) "Pigs in Greece" a 5th century BC Greco-Persian encounter. Of course, rules for flaming pig attacks are included. New material includes 2 user-created modules: A Dash of Saga which adds Saga and Norn cards that bring about events on the battlefield reminicent of the Icelandic sagas (think bloody). Also new is the Pig Wars Late Medieval Variant with rules and suggested unit compositions for the 14th and 15th centuries. By the author of Age of Reason/Napoleon/Discovery, A Firebell in the Night, Warfare at Sea in the Age of Reason, Samurai Knight Fever and Iroquois Terror. Continuing online support will be provided.
Note to owners of previous editions: the actual text of the rules haven't changed from previous editions except the addition of 1 new rule which randomized the intervals between the reshuffling of the player's cards rather than waiting until all cards have been played.

It's great to see a new edition that is more a reprinting than a major revision.

While the pdf version is available at Wargame Vault, the first place that announced they have the hardcopy was On Military Matters
