(Kickstarter) Drug War Z by Brigade Games

Brigade Games is already back with another Kickstarter campaign, Drug War Z, 28mm miniatures to cover the Cartels, the Policia, DEA, and a few zombies for fun!

I'm particularly intrigued by the option of the generic South American uniformed troops,  So many uses...

Well, That Was a Most Unusual Week

It's taken way too long these past 24 hours to actually put words on this post, so here's the short version.

Last Tuesday, I stretched to get out of bed and immediately thought I tore my lower abdominal muscles away from whatever they're attached to at the hips.  By the end of the day, the pain subsided with a focused pain on the lower right quadrant.

Last Wednesday, I hit the nearby urgent care to rule out muscular/other issues, assuming this strange pain was a weird transformation of appendicitis.  Everything was ruled out except appendicitis, and I waited for my wife to take me to the ER.

The ER shot back with concerning data, why was a historical pre-diabetic (untreated) fat guy exhibiting abdominal pain show up with a blood sugar of 600 and rising?

Answer:  Diabetes didn't want to slowly conquer this fat dude, it sent in its crazy friend the gall bladder to shoot a gall stone into the duct work of the pancreas and turn my right side of the body into a super-inflamed mush.
A dramatic recreation of the gall stone getting fired into my pancreas
One week later, one gall bladder less, I'm back at home, answering emails for work in the home office.

There's a bunch of needles, supplies, and insulin that wasn't there before, but that's okay.  People call these things wake-up calls, but I saw enough of those with my fellow patients.  I was certainly flying closer and closer to the sun which each passing year, but the gall stone shoved me into it, and I know I must deal with all the repercussions, no whining, no complaints, no bargaining.

I anticipate fewer posts for a while, but I plan on hiding out in the basement more starting this weekend, so let's see what's happening!
Don't know if and when I'd use this one, so here your go....

Lost Dispatches of Feraso #87 - Bull in a Magic Shop

8th of QuaDec, 1061 - Village of Eding, Kingdom of Crosedes (continued)
... Krull & Company quickly embraced living in the capital city of Hydincall.  It is the closest thing to cosmopolitan this side of Feraso City, and with just about any service, item, or delight to separate coin from its owner, they were in heaven.

Krull had discovered the gladiator, and Markuus and him partook in the NonDec tournament to close out the year.  The others spent their time as paying spectators, but Theron, he wandered the city a bit more.

Theron had inquired about attending the Magic Lyceum, but the story goes, he was laughed off the campus.  Upset from that encounter, he wandered the nearby shops that catered to the magically inclined.  He grabbed some spell components, giggled at the cost of a "slightly used" magic wand, and finally entered a curio shop.  It was a tight fit, overfilled with cluttered shelves and one sign written in at least eight languages.

*Do not handle the merchandise until negotiating with a salesperson*

He wasn't the only customer in there, so he bid his time as the staff took care of the others.

But the longer he waited the stronger to urge was to look an a large bull statue carved out of ivory.  In fact, the urge almost became a voice egging him to handle the bull.

Eventually, his willpower was not enough and he picked the item up.  Instantly, the item disappeared, and in its place was a full sized black bull, complete with a ring in its nose.  It went berserk in the shop, destroying nearly everything.

By the time the town guard made an appearance, the entire shop was ruined with Theron and the shopkeep the only people in the building, and the bull gone without a trace.

The arrest of Theron and subsequent trial was a farce made worse by the fact that it was conducted before the end of the gladiatorial festivities.  His son, Krull, and the their other adventuring friends had no clue as to what was going one!

Theron was found guilty and forced into indentured servitude for the shopkeeper, Laikkic Loc.  The terms of his servitude were based on hours worked and sales over a period of time, so, the financial windfall of his son winning the NonDec Tournament could do nothing to alter or shorten the sentence.  Theron was magically bound to no further than the outer walls of the city, and if he wasn't holding up his end of his obligation, the binding could be used to magically track him.
DM Notes: Here ends the adventuring career of Theron, the only magic-user, and possibly the only (and barely heard) voice of reason in the party.  He'll remain in Hydincall for the remainder of the campaign.  I believe Larry, the player was the first Army Reservist to bow out, and by September, the unit was getting deactivated and we were transferred all over the state.

It would never make back to Elsderth, but he took full advantage of the servitude in Laikkic's shop.  If you're stuck in the store, there's lots of arcane lore and book learning to be had, and he proved to be quite the salesman.  On top of that, allowing him full reign over the city meant a number of agreeable business negotiations not only helped him get out of his sentence in the minimum amount of time, but put him in a personal financial situation to help transfer the business into his name as Laikkic grew ill.

Almost a decade later, there was a subtle reference to Theron's Curios in the Ballad of the Pigeon God.  There were some tense negotiations with one PC, and some apparent explosions in the shop's vicinity by another PC.  I'm quite certain Theron had the funds to rebuild again and use the ol' Bull in a China Shop routine to snag free labor multiple times until his death in 1195.

A Small Hiatus

I’m typing this post from a hospital bed awaiting to go into surgery.  Nothing too epic, but I’ll be out of commission for a bit.

If it’s worse than anticipated,  The Lost Dispatches and at least the first week of #RPGaDay will auto post.

Lost Dispatches of Feraso #86 - The Start of the Short Year

33rd of TriDec, 1061 - Village of Crosedes, Kingdom of Crosedes
Thank Akana, I didn't tap out the entire cask of brandy I bought from the dwarf last fall.  The roads are barely passable with the thawing mud, and who shows up on the first caravan of the season?

Krull & Company

Krull brought back Markuus, Torm Touchberry, and Bizaud with him.  Theron's still at Hydincall, for reasons I'll get out of them eventually... might be the Magic Lyceum.

W. has been missing for long stretches of days in TriDec, and when they are here, they're not relaying their information to their "assistant."  It's quite frustrating, but I have pulled two pieces of information out of Krull.
  • They reached Hydincall, his burns were magically healed, and he "won" the NonDec Tournament of Gladiators at the Hydincall Arena.  This wasn't the "Championships of the World" held in SeptDec, rather the tournament closing the arena for the season until QuaDec of this year.  Not the best in the world, but certainly the best in Northern Crosedes, maybe Alois, Markovia, maybe even the Five Isles and some of Wyrmnal.
  • With this new found ability (and a letter (?) from Lord Athelstane), Krull has led the remaining members of the cohort back to Eding... to serve in the militia.
....

35th of TriDec, 1061 - Village of Eding, Kingdom of Crosedes
No one was told me that I would be the one doing the training....

36th of TriDec, 1061 - Village of Eding, Kingdom of Crosedes
They're a pain to train, but Krull & Company are good fighters....
Bizaud the half-orc caravan guard returned more bestial, more aggressive. An over-eager yes man to Krull.
7th of QuaDec, 1061 - Village of Eding, Kingdom of Crosedes
Less than a week of training, and W. finally needs my services with herbalism and disguises, neither one of my strong suits.  Barrack Tenslow now has command of that bunch.  Akana help him!....

8th of QuaDec, 1061 - Village of Eding, Kingdom of Crosedes
... and one day of training, Barrack got the story from Krull as to why Theron didn't come back with them....

The Game Chateau Shutters

My local gaming cafe, The Game Chateau, is closing its doors, due to the ongoing restrictions of Covid-19.

The Game Chateau started by hosting open gaming area, along with coffee and baked goods, and did expand into game and accessories retail.

I stopped into the Game Chateau a few early on their four-year existence.  The owners seemed nice and the concept wasn't my groove, but they worked hard to promote community.

That being said, they did bail on a collaboration with another FLGS for #FreeRPGDay, deciding to attend a convention as fans instead.

For the past year and a half, the shop has been on my way home from work, but I haven't felt any conscious need to visit.

The newspaper article I learned all this from also noted that current inventory was 40% with further promotions to be announced on their social media.

(Nostalgia) Historicon Games I've Run

With Historicon falling to the COVID this year, and being replace with Cyber Wars this year, it might be a good time to look back and reminisce about Historicon games I ran long ago....

The only note I'll add:  HMGS was in Fredericksburg for a long time, at least to this Northerner....

2019 - The Gnome Joust
2018 - Gnome Wars

The MBA Middle East board - Historicon 2011
Gnomes on the MBA board - Historicon 2011
The Gnome Joust - 2010

The Historicon 1999 PEL
Historicon to me isn't for running games.  It's for playing games.  Cold Wars and Fall-In! have all benefited from the experimental concepts of The Gnome King, the Stout Gnomes, and myself.

The Weekend is Finally Cancelled

With only a few stragglers left on the convention schedule, even the obstinate folks at The Weekend, August 13-15 in Carlisle have given up the ghost and have canceled their convention for this year.

Details for next year's con will be released.... next year.

500K is So Much More Satisfying than 40K.

Between work, home, work-from-home, and the general chaos I missed a milestone for the blog: Its half-million (500,000th) page view!

Let us rejoice and sing!

I'd like to thank some Italian and Ukrainian bots who helped pad the numbers over the years (I will still curse the bots that attack a specific post, wildly skewing the numbers, especially when some of the posts had some popularity from real live humans!)

I know there are newer blogs that have already surpassed my numbers, and quite a few blogs the same that have obliterated my numbers years ago, but I can pass two pieces of wisdom.

  1. Catering to the readers will only aggravate you, unless you share the same passion.
  2. If this is going to be your core hobby blog, try to write everyday.  If you have a new blog, or one you've essentially mothballed, you might want to try the #RPGaDay2020 challenge.
Sometimes the blog about the hobby becomes a hobby itself.

Thanks for the all the support folks. I promise things might get better.

I'm Way Too Busy to Game During This Pandemic

Alright true believers of the blog, we are into yet another month of staying at home, masking, and working from home.  I'm also starting to understand why these yahoos are the way they were.

We're still going outside, going to functions, like a car show that was replacing a much larger car racing venue (see gnome below!).

We've delved into swimming, and sleepovers for the kids, and a load of Hamilton on Disney+.

We've also took up fostering kittens behind my back.

I don't hate animals, but with two cats, two dogs, two kids, and a wife, I've got enough of God's creatures in the house.  But lo' and behold, while I'm finishing up some yard projects, my wife pulls into the driveway with a box full of kittens... and while I continue to clean up my project, one kitten escapes from the box and heads overs the hill and far away.  No one could catch them, and despite searching for three days, no one has managed to locate the little fella.

But now we have three kittens living in a large dog crate.
This is not the crate
All the while, my painting bench has been overwhelmed with Space Dwarfs.  The Macrocosm and Sandstorm Miniatures projects have successfully arrive (the former early,  and the latter after a year-plus delay).  Add two more Space Dwarf Kickstarters launching this month, plus the Wars of Ozz, the budget is tight.

The Star Wars d6 campaign is going strong.  We finally skipped a Monday session with a post-July 4th recovery, and this past week we ran a Christmas in July theme game using Risus and mixing up the Spice Girls, Sex and the City, Mannequin, Big Trouble in Little China, and Santa Claus with a Desert Eagle.  Good times. Write up for that game (and the last two Star Wars sessions) forthcoming.

And to complicate matters more, our 20-year old cat Mama passed away sometime over the weekend, and we found her, resting in one of her hiding spots.  Based on the vets analysis she was already ten years old we she arrived at our old house expecting kittens in just a few days.  We took care of that fiasco (not our first time handling wayward cat mothers), and sometime later, she entered our home and has been a fixture since.

Our bedroom has been cat hospice for the last six months, as she could no longer hop up on the dog safe set-up for food and water, and I'm delighted there will be no more kitty litter on the second floor, but she was a good cat that rarely bothered anyone, and spent her last week actually going downstairs to interact with kittens and sun herself in the bay window.
RIP - Mama (2000-2020)
It's already a messed up week and my major project for work has been postponed seven months AND the scheduled vacation my wife was going to take with the kids mid-week?  Cancelled. Piles of work, piles of family, and a weekend of small, socially distant basketball clinics, followed by a neighborhood reggae party.

I'd like nothing more than to hide in the basement and paint.....

Lost Dispatches of Feraso #85 - Lizardmen in the Swamp

10th SepDec 1060 - Village of Eding, Kingdom of Crosedes
The campaign in the Nightwood is escalating. Every militia patrol that's been added up and down the River Road is harassed by more and more brazen goblin activity.  Injuries are rare and goblin aim is as accurate as goblins showing courage.  I'm certainly hoping W.'s plan is helping our supposed allies to the north.  Sooner or later, I'll be part of those road patrols, and a cowardly goblins hits with a rock, every now and then.

As all the focus is along the north of Eding, I'm increasingly worried open our southern swampland.  Krull and Company have gone on a full-blown campaign against the lizardmen.  Hunting parties are hunted down, villages pillaged, and I swear there are rumors that Krull is paying some of Sellman's brigands to work as extra muscle.

Tactics like this won't keep us safe, in fact, I have a sneaking suspicion that when they fight back, Krull will be nowhere to be seen and we'll all suffer for it.

Krull has proven to be an aggressive and successful leader, although the others have told me his courage is entirely built up from the extra-tough armor he found in the Castle in the Moors.  Heavily enchanted plate mail, and a steady supply of shields makes him nigh-invulnerable to the lizardmen's attacks, even if they can still land blows against his compatriots.

14th of SepDec 1060 - Village of Eding, Kingdom of Crosedes
Krull is mighty no more!!!!

The war against the lizardmen continued at an ever-escalating pace, until last night.  Last night the lizardmen were not caught completely off-guard.  A small retinue escorted the women and children's escape, while the larger group fought a fighting retreat.

The lizardmen fought back, and continued a steady retreat, far longer than normal.  Krull's attention was so focused on hurting the lizardmen, that he, and everyone else out that night, failed to realized that the lizardmen were leading them in circles.

That is, until they dashed over a copse of trees, and five dozen warriors emerged out of the warriors to engage our "heroes."  Most dropped their weapons almost instantly, but Krull was still itching to continue the fight, swinging his sword and cursing at them in the lizard tongue... until he stopped moving.

He quite literally froze in an awkward position... unable to move, and barely able to talk.  Then, an older lizardman, bedecked in wild feathers and animal bones, emerged from the warriors.  The leader (shaman) of the creatures demanded the others kneel. They obliged.

Krull continued to curse.

Satisfied by the other's submission, and intolerant of Krull, the shaman order his warriors to stab Krull between the plates of his armor.   Only partially satisfied by the blood dripping off Krull's body, he then order the rest to set up a bonfire around the fighter's frozen body.

If they couldn't easily kill the man who had terrorized their tribe for days and weeks, they were going to burn him alive.

The other adventurers knelt in silence was the flames grew around their leader, friend, or loud, angry guy.  The group wouldn't specify, but I could tell it was Theron, Krull's father, who finally pleaded with the the shaman for his son's life.  A parent's eyes can't hide the love, and possibly shame for their child.

From there the details were sketchy, but Krull's great war with the lizardmen was now over.  Any sign of the adventurers even near the southern peasant fields would be met with an invasion of Eding no one has ever seen.  The lizardmen escorted the group out of the swamp.  Krull's injuries are mostly on his feet and legs.

15th of SepDec 1060 - Village of Eding, Kingdom of Crosedes
Ned Overland left Eding in the early morning hours.  He did not say goodbye to anyone.

17th of SepDec 1060 - Village of Eding, Kingdom of Crosedes
The militia picked up escalated goblin activity.  Rocks and slings were replaced with poorly shot arrows and undersized units horribly failing at ambushing our men.  The militia maintained discipline and did not pursue over the river into the Nightwood.

W. doesn't know and it's too heated to send a courier, but unbeknownst to me, W. learned some naturalist skills, arcane lore, heka-infused blessing to speak with animals, and will attempt to tie a note to a sparrow's leg and send it to the goblin shamans in good standing.

If W. does not need my services, I will find leisure anyway I can find fit.

22nd of SepDec 1060 - Village of Eding, Kingdom of Crosedes
My planned weekend of fishing during the harvest was cut short by orders to lead a patrol down the River Road.  Due to my keen eye, and expecting their tactics, I spotted the goblins hiding along the opposite riverbank, and then chucked a rock into a nearby tree, knocking a goblin off a branch.  All the goblins, save the fallen one, fled into the Nightwood.

I grabbed the fallen goblin by his hair knot, forced a magic elixir down his throat, and as soon as he regained consciousness, began barking at him in goblin.

*Stop the attacks or the witch will have her revenge... tomorrow*

This brought great fear to the goblin, and as I dropped him to the ground, he scrambled away and swam across the river.

As usual, the younglings in this militia (none of whom speak goblin) are in awe, and my legend grows.

.....

24th of SepDec 1060 - Village of Eding, Kingdom of Crosedes
My legend is set in-stone with two straight days with neither a sound by or the sight of a single goblin by the militia.  The message, no matter from whom, was received, and right as the harvest begins in force.

25th of SepDec 1060 - Village of Eding, Kingdom of Crosedes
Krull and Company left this morning, with the excuse to winter in Hydincall with all their riches.   It's also been 11 days, and Krull's burns to his feet and legs are still so bad that he cannot walk.  A lack of clerical healing beyond those of Markuus is quite obvious.    To add insult to injury, since Krull cannot walk, nor ride in stirrups, the party has been forced to buy a cart for a local farmer to haul the warrior to at least Omsjik, where they might buy a wagon for less ignominious transportation.  It's a sad end for the Summer, and I don't know if or when they'll return.

18th of OctDec 1060 - Village of Eding, Kingdom of Crosedes
The harvest is almost complete.  There are no goblins, no lizardmen, and most importantly, none of Krull's companions can be found.

W. has required nothing of me, even the friendship of basic conversation.  With the snow coming in less than a month, I've decided to prepare for the winter.

With two young girls, I figured Barrack needs the coin and the time away from home, so I offered him a chance to split enough wood to keep my aching bones warms for five months.

To warm my heart, I've ordered two casks from the dwarf Thavumilr Bottledelver.  While he's never been late, getting it in this early should guarantee delivery before I'm snowed in with a few books from W.'s collection.  They won't mind at all.

GM Notes: The encounter with Krull nearly getting burned at the stake by the lizardman is absolutely true.  A few sessions/encounters escape my memory, but most of the time they were searching for ruins, and running into lizardmen.  And Krull's AC (plus Dex) was hard for a traditional 2nd Edition lizardman to penetrate, so he ran roughshod over them.

Until news came to the tribal elders further away, and the shaman decided to reset the relatioship with the villagers back to the somewhat rocky status it had always been.

Ned's departure was planned, as Wooly went off and became a manager at a dollar store (when dollar stores were the hot new thing).  The burning of Krull was his last adventure.

Ned probably went off to Hydincall for the winter, and hopefully he earned enough coin to get back to Argivia or Danaan to live his final years by the beach.

Or perhaps, he got word that a certain acquaintance was now the Bishop of Ferrand, and a quick visit could earn him some soul-cleansing forgiveness and perhaps a hand in his retirement plans.

Thirteen years in the village might be smoothing over Elsderth's callous heart, as he now associates with individuals he once thought to be "Enemies of the Village."  It's clear that he does not like Krull, does not care for Theron, and is less an asset with "W." every day.

(Kickstarter) Sci-Fi Dwarves by Macrocosm Miniatures

July has brought forth a large collection of Space Dwarfs/Dwaves, both in new Kickstarters launched and Kickstarters fulfilled.

With a number of campaigns sitting on my workbench, I feel overwhelmed with the awesomeness of Macrocosm's Sci-Fi Dwarves campaign, sculpted by Bob Olley, INSO, and Alessio Cisbani.

Squads are £25/$32US apiece, with the £100 pledge netting you a free Psyker and Witch Hunter characters (also available separately)

Money's not tight, but it might take the rest of the month to figure out what else I need to fill out the Space Dwarf army I've somehow collect.

(Kickstarter) Anthropomorphic Adventurers by Blind Beggar Games

Despite the pleadings and admissions of awesomeness from our intrepid correspondent and AWARD WINNING GM Mike Lung, I usually avoid posting about the Blind Beggar Kickstarters for three reasons: (1) Some of the sculpts have not been up to snuff (2) Some of the prices are a bit high and (3) The Kickstarter lengths have been terribly short.  Many of the third-party promotion of Kickstarters (re: blogs) don't kick into gear until weeks two or three.

The current Blind Beggar Kickstarter, Anthropomorphic Adventurers: White Metal Sci-Fi Miniatures
hits one of my soft spots (animals), the sculpts look good, and Mike caught my attention early enough to give them a solid mention.

On top of that, they are re-offering the Space Bears from a prior Kickstarter.  A hearty opponent of the adventurers, indeed.

Lost Dispatches of Feraso #84 - Ned Overland

28th of Hexdec, 1060 - Village of Eding, Kingdom of Crosedes
Krull & Company were off meandering the village, hitting the trading post, wooing the peasant lasses, whatever naive and overconfident adventurers do.

They also left Ned Overland all alone in the Blue Wizard, whittling away near the unlit fireplace making small talk with the local elders about the fish in the river.

I just casually walked up to him, put a flagon of mead on the table beside him, and asked, "Ned, have you heard from Talanth recently?"

The old fighter's right eyebrow peaked higher than his receding hairline, but then he reached over for the mead, took another look at me, eyebrow extended even further, shrugged his shoulders, then took a swig.

"Haven't seen him in years, decades probably.  If you ask me it hasn't been long enough.  What do you want to know?"
Free mead makes Ned talkative
I remember C's reports back to the royalty and nobility alike.  Talanth was crafty and unforgiving, Thendara was power-hungry, the fighters were stupid and drunk, and Derlenth oozed pure evil.  But Ned, he seemed like decent folk turned sideways, and in my conversation with him, it appears he's righted that ship.

Ned was born in Talmark, to a family of freeman.  He used his powers of personality to avoid getting impressed into their military as a foot soldier and remained free, working caravans up and down the Greater Weissmach.  At some point he ended up in the Pirate City of Nauzantl, and unable to find any work from someone at best questionably trustworthy, fell in with Talanth.

"I really like Colegredd and the other one.  Not the brightest, but fun, tough guys to be around. I tried to mix it up with Thendara, she didn't take to kindly, and I preferred to stay alive. The religious chick was nice when she was with us, but I never realized until much later that Talanth hired an evil priest to replace her.

"Talanth?  He wasn't a bad guy.  He took any job we could find, demanded half up front ('cause it was the thing civilized folks did') and if the job was too tough, we split town.  Bit of a one-way journey, if you ask me."

"We got rid of Derlenth pretty quick, and with all the scams they ran, I bailed out soon after.  Worked through Argivia, Danaan, crossed Barthey into the Myridius City-States, worked as a mercenary for the Crusaders, sometimes for the locals warlords, sometimes both at the same time. "

"My best time in my life was Khemmet.  The Old Ways, the Ancient Magics, the topless women, and the combination of the desert and the warm sea air solved a number of the maladies I picked up along the way."

"It was time in Lybbos wear I discovered the gladiator style.  Less protective, but also much lighter and cooler in the desert sun.  If I was a younger man, I would have tried my luck in Hydincall, but visiting here, dressed like a gladiator from the distant south, those kids pounced on me like I was some famed fighter.  I fibbed some stories from the Tripoliton League and Ispatlia, and a few of Talanth's good stories, and I'm back at almost sixty slogging through swamps, killing lizardmen, and seeing quality shares of the treasure."

"But I haven't heard hide nor hair of Talanth since I left.  With his personality, he burned too many bridges, and let Dzebog have mercy on the next group he put together.  Thendara was ready to quit.... or join a better crew, and Colgredd and Oli, they were gonna stick around with him until he got them killed."

There was nothing satisfactory in my Ned Overland interview for any of the old Elsderths.  No vengeance, no mocking criticism of their incompetence.  I probably would have found a pattern with I different group if I hadn't fallen into the aftermath of Blackash's crew.

We traded holiday destinations in Argivia and Danaan, and Ned provided me with some ancient and vast libraries in Khemmet, but by the time we had gotten that far, the elves had returned, and Overland's attentions were turned elsewhere.

GM's Notes:  My notes are sparse, and my memories fuzzy, but most of my high school crew made appearances in the Army Campaign.   George (Thendara) played Zoog,  Scott (Drunken Warrior/Stupid Ranger) played Bizaud, and out of everything, Wooly played Ned Overland again.  I don't think I leveled him to cover the then-unknown time that had passed, but he was quite active in this part of the storyline.   It was his first RPG-character, and like like any traditionalist, he wanted to get his money out of him.

And with that, another one of Elsderth's links to the past is revised and fades away.

The #RPGaDay2020 List is Up!

Before the 4th of July holiday, I was given a great present:  The "topics" for #RPGaDay2020 !

Now that the fervor of American Independence has subsided, it's as good a time as any to post them.
I think I've warmed up to the single word prompts.  It draws out different reactions from new players and grognards alike. You might even get through all 31 days without mention the current climate of socio-politicizing RPGs.

A Daytrip Adventure and a Visit to Pop's Culture Shoppe (2020 Review)

I actually took some vacation this week before the holiday weekend, and overnight "day" trip back up to Wellsboro.  Wellsboro is in Tioga County, which is small and remote enough that they're part of the earliest group of counties which have been designated "Green" (all businesses open, barbers/hair/nail salons 50% capacity appointment only, restaurants are allowed 50% inside and outside seating.  Otherwise wear your darn mask around people.)

Going up the night before and spending the entire day up there allowed the kids to swim at someone else's pool, allowed my wife to take different walks, and allowed me a few minutes of absolute quiet.

Our day was cut short by tree cutting along Main St and a lack of inventory among the regular stores and and usual tourist destinations (Thanks COVID for the latter.)   After a solid trip to the bookstore, lunch at the Wellsboro Diner, and and okay "boutique" ice cream at the new Creamery, we tried to end our day at the main location I wanted to go to, Pop's Culture Shoppe at 25 Main St.

There are a handful of gaming stores with a more "immense and diverse selection," as my old boss used to say, but Julian and Anja Stam continue to run their business plan with cover the hardcore gamers, the casual boardgamers, and every random tourist that wanders in their doors.

Our take-away from the store is not something you would normally pick up at a "Magic 40k Captain Sweatpants" destination:  A harmonica, a chess/checkers/backgammon set, five dollar primer(!) and two pack of Magic cards, just for fun.  We could have picked up a lot more, but in this crazy COVID world, I might consider full price and shipping from Wellsboo for my want list.
The high point of the visit wasn't strolling through the aisles and aisles of product, but the conversations Julian was having with other customers.  I've never heard of an in-depth editions war discussion  over Boggle before, and that followed up an awesome discussion and search for not one, not two, but three copies of Photosynthesis. There are a few stores in my travels that stock that game, and one or two that I know of that host multiple copies, but none have the customer service of Pop's.  I believe that interaction netted the store sales from all the family members from the initial interaction.  Now, all of that would come to fruition with a simple "Yes we have it, cash or charge," but the long lost art of customer service and enthusiasm was missing at most shops, even prior to the shutdown.
Pop's Playroom (and library)
While the "Green" status has opened up in-store gaming elsewhere, Pop's Playroom remains quiet for casual game nights, although they had just a safe and awkwardly social distanced Magic Pre-release for the new Core 2021.  And despite only 25 cases in the whole county, it's still a bit too early to start up the usual community  Mah-Jong games and their Chess club.

The store is a staunch enforcer of mandatory masking, but they are happy to schedule private shopping after-hours, and offer curbside service for those who aren't able to comply.
Pop's Playroom (and library)
Feel free to find my other reviews of Pop's over the years, but I assure you, things continue to evolve and improve at Pop's Culture Shoppe.   I've found a few outstanding stores over the years, and some are even better than Pop's in certain things, but every store I walk into is immediately compared to Pop's.

The Five Gnomes out of Five Gnomes for Pop's Culture Shoppe is maintained yet again!

The latest issue of Game Trade Magazine (#245) should now be available at your FLGS.  The game listings are available in pdf here.

It's completely unrelated to me (and I passed on the Kickstarter), but I giggled when I saw the cover of the issue:

Star Frontiers to Star Wars d6 Attribute/Skill Conversion

It's not pretty, but I did find the most basic conversion of Star Frontiers' percentile system to West End's d6 for Star Wars.  I don't really need equipment/weapons conversion, just the main rolls.

In a world where I'd like my players to actually read the blog, this is the post they'll start with and realize we're using old Star Frontiers modules for the Star War campaign.  No worries, though, since all but one were born after Zebulon's Guide.
