Who's Stealing Historicon's Thunder? The Illuminati, of Course.... and They're Hungry

I'm finally recovered from Historicon. I was powering pretty hard from Thurday, well into Sunday morning, closing bars, waking up early, working off little sleep, and only needing a 20-minute power nap one day to keep going.  Outside of my heels killing me each day (with special orthotics in them that usually work), I was cruising right along.

Even with a fully licensed driver as my co-pilot, I drove home... the circuitous route, visiting my Mom in Easton, my daughter keeping Grandma company as I knocked out the yard work and some errands for her, before hoping in the car and getting back to my place by 3:30, so she could go home to Albany and meet up with friends for ice cream.

It was about the time she was getting home that I sat on my couch with the a revelation ringing through my body:

Hydrate

And I heeded my body's pleadings, including holding of on finishing my Historicon 2026 AAR.  I did finish it up early Monday morning for the masses to enjoy, but the time I got to work at 9am, I had a feeling I rarely had as a moderating youth.

Probably the closest feeling to being hungover since January 1998.  Assuming it was not alcohol related, it might have been an odd con crud, or perhaps my body just couldn't handle a good time anymore.

For 17 years, HMGS convention reports are usually a big draw, and if I made it to a Historicon, the write-ups still remain in the Top 5 of each year's posts. To be honest, if might be my only post in the quarter that cracks the top 25.

Regardless, I came home after work on Monday, scarfed some grub, and edited the AAR post and promoted it.

It's a positive response thus far, even saving most of the gnome pics to it's one separate post yesterday.

As usual, I expect Historicon to shine in my weekly top 10 at the top spot for a week or three.

It didn't get a day.

Because my fear is coming true.

I didn't mind the influx of bot posts.  I only slightly lamented me quickly accelerating through million mark posts like a hot knife through butter.  But those hits were at the landing/home page, not individual post usually.

But this past week, Historicon was overshadowed by the Texas Roadhouse Massacre for Illuminati University (IOU) .  A few other random posts emerged from the rubble with a few dozen hits apiece.   Texas Roadhouse Massacre was getting direct hits in the thousands.

I've got too many #RPGaDay2026 posts to write up, and too many new minis to paint, but I lament the private activity of watching posts grow (and die) naturally....

(RISUS) Loren Stutts, Protector of Freedom and Community Standards

Early on during the pandemic, I ran some connected one-shots online: Bigg Melons in the Time of COVID and The Great Hall of COVIDiots, again using Risus for mechanics and Coffee Shop by James d'Amato for set-up.

I already used this photo multiple times for posts, but it warrants some stats.

Loren Stutts, Protector of Freedom and Community Standards
Retired Navy Vet (Brown Water Vietnam) with a lot of free time on his hands (4)
State-Renowned Model Ship in a Bottle Hobbyist (3)
Fledgling Internet Scholar (2)
Fervent protector and legal interpreter of individual freedom, personal rights, and medical research (1)

Loren's a good guy.  Always has been.  Church some Sundays, Salvation Army kettle every Christmas, and he participated in the Toys for Tots motorcycle run until his hip replacement failed and he was forced to sell his Harley.

When COVID first hit, he tried to follow all the guidelines, but the were getting complicated.  However, the man simply could not stay at home and with help of a friend on an internet message board who believed in God, Firearms, and the links to the Gnomes of Zurich to financial institutions and barber shops all through Idaho, he was gifted an ingenious item.  A hat made out of the pool noodles gave him enough space to go down the aisles of local stores without everyone giving him dirty looks for not wearing a masks.  Strange looks, yes, but not dirty one.

As the months wore on, Loren has attracted a new group of friends.  A bit rougher around the edges than his buddies he sees at the VA, but they drink the right beer, like the same music, and seem to agree with every word he says about the government's ridiculous response to the pandemic.

In truth, a sorcerer of chaos who happened upon Loren's posts on the internet, gifted him a Helm of Covfefe masked as a crazy mass of pool noodles.  The Helm slowly influences, then all-out mind controls people around the controller.   Loren has made mention about wishing some local government leaders and loudmouths would simply disappear.  He's yet to connect the dots and realize his new friends are fervent worshippers of him and have kidnapped, tortured, and even sacrificed some of the mentioned people to the Chaos Gods, and possibly the newest Chaos God, Loren himself.

(Risus) Krug the Pug, Alien Psychic Manipulator

Most intelligence agencies on Earth that deal with aliens will only admit to one Remoolian residing on the planet.  Only the highest ranking directors in one or two the elite organizations that one their greatest failures is tracking a second Remoolian, Krug the Pug

Unlike the loyal Remoolian, that even assists Earth's defenses from time to time, Krug has brazenly eluded the proper authorities, choosing his targets wisely and keeping a power base that stays under the radar.

He's been in operation for decades.  Arriving close to 50 years ago, Krug has developed type of psychic mind control ability.  It is unsure whether this power has been nurtured from his own brain, or is mechanically created with one of the many mind control devices throughout the galaxies.

Krug focuses on developing human "pets" that can care for him in his Pug disguise, and provide him access to some from of power.  Most of these pets have either been in the entertainment industry, or were in the upper echelon of the social strata.

Tracing his journey, his travels in the 70's and 80's involved old money, technocrats, and Hollywood filmakers, most notably a cameo in the sci-fi movie Dune.

The last known "pet" of his was Alister Burke, an notable gay opera conductor in the Seattle with many social and celebrity connections ,who was under the Remoolian's control from as early as 2003 until his death in 2010.  Rumors have suggested that Krug has left Earth sometime in the last decade, but all trails have ended up cold.

To better control his "pets" Krug has actively encouraged them to seek counseling and thereapy, and attends the sessions under the pretense or a service animal, even before such a concept was not commonly acceptable.  Through his pets sessions, he's come to understand that he is a narcissist and upon accepting his limitations, and working to improve himself, has prevented himself from spoiling a a number of plans.

(Risus) Gritty - Paragon of Democracy

Full Disclaimer: I'm still allowed to hate groups of people in this country, and it shall remain the Philadelphia Flyers and their fans, but dammit if I find their mascot, Gritty, more creepily endearing, thanks to a deluge of memes this week for the presidential election.

I previously statted up Gritty after his debut, two years ago. I've also referenced him in some "fun" games that I've ran.

But I would never openly threaten the City of Philadelphia like a few Republican pundits and operatives did. That way leads to madness... and so many Gritty memes.

Without further ado, let's update Gritty, using Risus: The Anything RPG, to reflect his current status in short-term pop culture.

Gritty McFlyerssuck - 2020 COVID Edition
Perverse Deification of the Modern Spirit of Philadelphia (6)*
Feisty Over-aggressive Muppet Wannabe (4)
Fierce Competitor Who is Not as Nimble as He Thinks (3)
Googly-Eyed Flyers Mascot (1)**

*Gritty can summon one Grunt Squad: Angry Battery-Chucking, Pole-Climbing, Freedom Loving, Pissed-Off Philadelphians (4).  If the Grunt Squad is defeated, Gritty may summon another Grunt Squad with a strength equal to his Modern Spirit of Philadelphia cliche, minus two.

**Equipment: Dual-action hot-dog/t-shirt cannon

I'm hoping his biggest cliche drops before hockey starts up.  #GoPens

School's Back??????

In this new age of love and COVID, I've lost track of how many rescheduled starts for school have been announced.
I hope and pray that the official start of virtual school is in thirty minutes of this posting.  I better see vast improvements over the curriculum and the teachers' ability to use the online programs at least a small step better than the actual students.

I shouldn't complain, but after the nightmare of incompetency I saw in the spring, and the numerous pictures of my children's new teachers lounging all summer long at the beach... with no concern for masking or social distancing... and then complain about possibly teaching the students face-to-face at some point this year, I will give zero mercy if there's a significant problem.

Supermarket Sweep and the Secret Masters

The binge-watching list during the quarantine has been eclectic: the first season of Cheers, We Bare Bears,  and yeah, I may have pulled some concepts out of Tiger King, but the biggest show that shows the divide between parents and kids is Supermaket Sweep on Amazon Prime.

The kids simply don't get it.  It's super cheesy, it's got big hair, swinging couples, and an Illuminati-themed host force to wear all the sweaters rejected by the Cosby Show.  My wife and I have fond memories of the show.  The kids look at us with the same horror for when I try to put a black-and-white movie on TV.

But tell me this isn't the work of Illuminati Secret Masters in Training, Jr Woodchuck Division?  Maybe the Ladies Auxiliary #fnord knitted it?  Maybe it's its own life form?

The Grand Gala That Was 2019 for D&D

One of the parts of my job is to apparently to argue with statistics and data with the marketing company we used.  They announce glorious gains and improvements from their campaigns, and it's my job to drill huge holes into their claims, somewhat to argue against contractual increases, but personally, to tell them that they're full of it.  It's nice to celebrate a million phone calls, web leads, or even pieces of mail, but if half of them are blank or garbage, that should affect the success of the program.

I'm quite open to the fact that I'm no longer (and usually never was) part of the mainstream gamer demographic.

With the latest promotion by Wizard of the Coast for their market research, I didn't orginally exist as part of their research...

The original pie chart stopped at 40-45, not including anyone truly middle-aged or beyond.
Those over 45 must be playing the special "Carousel" Edition.....
As I pace back to their last reported marketing survey in 1999, they claimed that there were 5.5 million active gamers in the US alone, and to make matters worse, they only included gamers 12-35 in the survey.  Back then, I was a spry 25 year old, so I didn't review the data much, but after twenty years, all of those now end up in the two oldest categories for 2019.

Now, considering they project 40 million fans of D&D, including folks who just listen to D&D podcasts or watch Critical Role, what are the actual number of active gamers in that pie chart?  I'd love to know how many of the 8-17 group are finding it on their own, or all they led in by the demographic WotC wants to ignore.

Some impressive numbers there, but additional questions are raised?  How many introductory boxed sets were the less than stellar Stranger Things boxed sets?  What's the comparison of gimic vs intrigue?  Are they counting worldwide sales for the 46 years, because my research shows Paizo overwhelming them in the US, and Amazon wasn't the dominant force yet in RPGS than it is now.

And is increased Sales is Europe unit sales, is Amazon.eu active in distribution, what's really going on?
It's great for self-promotion, but Hasbo shareholders might like more tangible financials.  A quick review of Twitter aside, how exactly is the exposure translating into players, then customers, than a consistent revenue stream?

And 4.3 billion minutes of passive viewership in Twitch sounds impressive, and I think it still is, but to put it into perspective the last season of Game of Thrones (since they bring it up), had 5.1 billion minutes of passive viewership, crammed together in six episodes.  Entire first season of the Big Band Theory (when it was 68th in viewership?)  2.8 billion minutes watch of the first run over 17 half hours in  year.  Far better than me going Facebook Live, but giving the data context is always important.

(Kickstarter) Illuminati Coins from Steve Jackson Games

Despite my love for Steve Jackson Games books, the small quantity of "accessories" they've offered put them over the top for me.  I swear upon my that I still have my Illuminati cloisonne pin from year's ago (I may or may not have been associated with catering).

On the wings of Conspiracy Theory and the latest edition of  Illuminati, SJG has launched a quick, one-week Kickstarter for Illuminati Coins.

What was once twelve coins for $15 has grown to fifteen , thanks to stretch goals set by the Secret Masters.  In addition to multiple coin sets, add-ons include copies of Conspiracy Theory, Illuminati, print-on-demand versions of GURPS Illuminati and GURPS IOU, and finally, Pyramid Dice!

Denver Airport Trolls Their Tin-Foil Hat Fans.... or Do They????

Most large public works projects are full of rumors and cost overruns, but the Denver International Airports has been chock full of scandals and conspiracy theories

Instead of ignoring this pop culture phenomenon, the airport has fully embraced it in their latest campaign advertising the latest round of renovations.

With my "Curse of Zevon" Cthulhu game needing very little inspiration, I was close to giddy when I discovered that the airport opened to the public on February 28, 1995.  It's ten months away from the current timeline, but who says we have to wait till then to visit?

Playtest the Newest Edition of Illuminati!

Steve Jackson Games is updating their classic Illuminati for the 21st Century.
Through October 31st, players can download the Rules Sheet and Playtest game components and send feedback through their playtest forums on their Illuminati page.

Thus far, the biggest change is the obvious removal of Government and Communist factions.

And those Russian Political Hackers are bad-ass...

(Kickstarter) Conspiracy Theory by Steve Jackson Games

Love conspiracy theories?  Tired of the Panda jokes in Cards Against Hummanity?  Love explaining that "Hiroshima 1945"  is the appropriate card for "Fluffy" in a game of Apples to Apples due to the influence of the Trilateral Commission and Bette Davis?

Then there's a spot on your shelf waiting for Conspiracy Theory, now on Kickstarter by Steve Jackson Games.

The Confederate Hurricane Connection

What do Confederate monuments, eclipses, and stalled hurricanes with biblical flooding have in common?

It's probably all Covfefe's fault.  At least we know he had a hand in it.

During the period of 1890-1920, numerous statues to Confederate war heroes were installed all throughout the South.   While beloved by a populace properly distanced from a noble "lost cause", the financing of the statues had a more mystical purpose.  Dampening the effects of hurricanes.

Many of the early monuments sat on power nodes: locations where ley lines intersected one another.  This produced increased magical energy for local hedge wizards.... and actual wizards within the remnants of the first iteration of the Klu Klux Klan to promote their agenda of white superiority.

However, the destructive forces of the hurricanes that destroyed Galveston in 1900 and 1915, attracted much more powerful entities in the magical community.  Documentation is scarce, but it has been ascertained that a summit of the some the most powerful organizations was held and it was decided that additional monuments would be built along the ley lines to draw these destructive storms in the interior of the United States, rather than linger in the Gulf, where they were prone to stall or even grow in power.

For nearly 40 years, this series of weather dampeners disguised as Lee, Jackson, Stuart, and others, worked well.  It wasn't until this magical weather alliance began to crumble under the strains of post-war America and the Civil Rights movement that Hurricane Audrey slammed into the Texas-Louisiana coast.

Some groups decided that even more statues on weaker nodules could be used as a stop-gap, which accounts for the erection of new monuments through the 50's and 60's.  However, it has been the utter lack of coordination of the numerous groups against the near-unstoppable power of Gaia herself that has caused the wall of monuments to act as a weakened sea wall, sometimes moving the brunt north, other times letting a killer storm through unimpeded.

Over the last fifty years, the sorcerer Covfefe has been one of the few individuals interested in maintaining this hurricane barrier.  Feeding on Rebel pride and the fears of non-white races, he has regularly recruited white under-educated males into organizations to conduct marches and rallies, steeped with chants and songs that are only slightly deviated from the mystic texts.  The events did not need to be big, as numerous rallies seemed to trump actual attendees.  Sometimes even the threat of such activities seemed to accomplish whatever mysterious plot Covfefe wanted to achieve.

After the catastrophe which was Katrina, Covfefe realized the total solar eclipse in 2017 would intersect the hurricane barrier, and the right rituals could be used to strengthen it again.  He dispatched his unwitting racist pawns to march against the evil of Progressivism and Multiculturalism, building a significant base that he could draw upon when the stars were right.  Through his efforts, the Gulf Coast enjoyed over a decade of calm seas.

As the eclipse neared, however, a social movement to remove the statues for their connection to slavery grew across the country. This was not some evil conspiracy, rather a genuine effort by large groups of people to remove the overt symbolism the monuments represented. While many of the statues had little effect on the barrier, the speed of their removal alarmed even the eternal Covfefe.  Fearing his chance to stabilize the wall was fleeting, he called up a large group of his neo-Nazi, white supremacists, and general racists to protest the removal of the statue of Robert E Lee in Charlottesville, Virginia, protecting a significant ley line, first documented by Thomas Jefferson.  An above-average march with the proper mixture of chants by the alt-right and counter protesters, would be just enough to hold the barrier together, while the growing followers of the sorcerer worked towards a new multi-purpose "wall" along the the Rio Grande.

Unfortunately, violent members of the Antifa disrupted the ceremony.   Within the membership of the anti-fascists has always been a volatile group of magical anarchists, cancelling magic for the simple sake of doing so.

They had undermined a slowly growing effort at Standing Rock.   Occupy Wall St?  There was reason the encampment was in Zuccotti Park.

... and the mystical desires of the movement would have worked to, if it had not been for the undermining efforts of the Anti...ma?

With the protest in Charlottesville in shambles (even the meek attempt at a blood sacrifice by vehicle failed to secure his goals) Covfefe could only watch the eclipse occur and essential deactivate the whatever was left, leaving the Texas coast completely vulnerable to Harvey.

But what few realize, even among those who know the dark secrets man was never meant to know, was that Harvey was a summoned aberration that backfired thanks to the failures of Covfefe.

After Hurricane Katrina, tens of thousands of residents of New Orleans were displaced.  This included some rather prominent practitioners of voodoo.  In decisions that confused the homeless, some prominent voodoo priests were not allowed back into the city.  This enraged those priests and instead of plotting revenge through traditional voodoo practices, many of them spent a decade working with Haitian refugees, and others delved into the darkest, blackest magicks.

They finally realized that their magicks could be combined to spell doom onto all within the city of New Orleans, innocent and guilty alike. They attempted a smaller version of the ritual two weeks before the eclipse, a steady rain that still managed to overwhelm the city pumps in areas. With the eclipse, and the loss of key "hurricane barriers" within New Orleans, a storm with the fury of the full ritual would linger over the Crescent City for days, if not weeks, sinking the city once and for all.

Except the ritual was terribly miscalculated.  The failures of Covfefe caused a backlash that flew back to the source of the ritual, sending the destructive power of Harvey further west, stalled right atop the relocated, corrupted Voodoo priests... of Houston.

Or that's one way of looking at it.

Covfefe Returns to Earth!

Despite the protestations by mundanes that gamers are trying to hide from reality, sometimes reality is far better than fiction.

Somehow Donald Trump, the Viceroy of Twitter, finally goofs up a Tweet, and the world goes wild. Knowing how much I screw up my posts on social media, that's actually pretty impressive.

So what is Covfefe?

The correct question is WHO is Covfefe?

Covfefe was a early member of the Rosicrucians in 17th Century Germany.  He was one of the secret alchemists mentioned in Confessio Fraternitatis that were posed to upset the political and scientific landscape of Europe.   The Enlightenment did bring tremendous change to the world, but it was nothing compared to what could have occurred if the alchemical brotherhood's potential power did not disintegrate.

For many of them, the simple lack of a social safety net outside the Rosicrucians allowed them to be captured by agents of the Church or State and dealt with harshly.  Other, more sophisticated members, succumbed to simple offers of wealth and power that distracted them from their true goals for society.
Covfefe suffered both failings.  A greedy outsider, the alchemist quickly decided that he needed to acquire additional skills to protect his interests and prove his value to potential employers.   He travelled Europe, dealing with some of the most ruthless and vile cults, cabals, and coteries trying to amass his knowledge.  Most were merely raging socio and psychopaths, and to cover his role in their rituals, sacrifices, and dark masses, Covfefe would contact the authorities and arrange their capture and eventual destruction.

As the years passed, Covfefe earned the trust of the Church and the Absolute Monarchs reigning throughout Europe.   He became a secret inquisitor to both Church and State, hunting out crazed usurpers to order and stability, all the while shielding the actual cults and orders who knew secrets that Man Was Not Meant to Know.

With his alchemical and magical powers acquired over the years, Covfefe was near immortal, but the subsequent Age of Revolution forced him underground, where he could toy with the emotions of man at his own pace.

Napoleon?  Possibly Covfefe.  Assassinations of political leaders?  Probably not, unless they upset the social order too much.   The Great War?  Certainly not, as he had grown to enjoy the new monarchs of Europe.  If he was still active, he certainly would have attempted to dispel the wards that protected the Mad Monk Rasputin from tainting the Romanovs.  However, he was spending much of his time in a secret lair far into the Arabian Desert.... but not far enough to have T.E. Lawrence influence hundreds of Arab fighters to assault the compound.  Covfefe fled before his immortal soul was truly tested. Lawrence only wanted certain texts, the other items were either destroyed or given to the Sultan of Nejd... and ultimately the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

It's uncertain what Covfefe has directly influenced in the past century.  Is he working with or against the other secret orders, and if so, to what end?

There are those who are rumored to be followers of Covfefe, or at least avid students of what little information is available.  Much of the writings that Lawrence obtained are not available for public purview.  Those that are hiding in the plain sight of the public are simple spells of illusion, enchantment, and redirection, paltry parlor tricks compared to his true power displayed hundreds of years ago, but far more effective on a peasantry connected by a network of technology.   Powerful divination and evocation magicks weren't necessary when one could simply place a misdirection enchantment on a tie tack, keffiyeh, or even a hairpiece and the masses could be distracted by its randomly occurring results.

Of course when King Salman wheeled out one of his prized artifacts at a recent conference with President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi of Egypt and President Donald Trump of the United States, it wasn't a coincidence. the Orb of Covfefe sat unused for decades, waiting for the perfect time for three followers of the mage-alchemist to come together and finish the ritual that will force Covfefe to return and aid them in their time of plight.
Boom-Sha-lock-lock Boom!
The ritual has been completed (why else was Trump so drained at the G-7 that he needed a golf cart?) Trump has summoned Covfefe via Twitter.  If the immortal was only granting a portion of his knowledge and power to get the Donald elected President, internet thoughts and prayers won't be enough when he actually appears in the White House.

And here you thought Steve Bannon was the player behind the scenes.  He only has an expired membership to the John Birch Society.

Then again, in this day and age, Covfefe might just be Ben Kingsley pretending to be the Mandarin in Iron Man 3 all over again...

Originally, I was going to stat out Covfefe in Risus, just like I did to explain Trump, but as the concept grew, there are just too many options to restrict him as an all-powerful being, or a confidence man with streak of immortality... and a lot of luck.

OGRE Plastic Minis All Painted Up, Plus Some General Blog Ranting

As I scurry about finishing things before I drive down to Baltimore to jump on a great big boat, a few things.

From the latest update on the OGRE Plastic Minis Set 1 Kickstarter, yet another delay, this one pushing things back an extra six weeks.  We're into the Fall now, and six months to keep up the level of enthusiasm I have for 1/285th scale sci-fi combat is pretty hard.

While I still have some hope on Steve Jackson Games, in the waning hours of the Talislanta: The Savage Land.  I want to support Tal in anyway possible.  Since I go crazy on my monthly Apathy column when I see a company release a identical sourcebooks for two or more games, the concept of now printing TSL under FIVE systems (Original Tal, D&D 5th Edition, d6, and now Pathfinder and Savage Worlds) plus a blizzard of supplemental product that's more akin to a booth at a rock concert, I've inched my pledge down to just the pdf.

Rumors of a TORG Kickstarter continue to swirl.  Maybe it will happen by the time I return.

Episode #4 of the Pigeon God is all set to post next Tuesday.   My annoying social media blitz will commence the following Monday, immediately followed by the Episode #5 the next day.

Speaking of the Journal, I finished transcribing the entire thing into episodic blog posts.   The first ten episodes (currently of 48) are either posted or finished and waiting to be posted each Tuesday.  There are four more finished between #11-48, and ten that need significant writing  The rest simply need to be converted into a semi-readable prose style, with consistant formatting.

Projects for May (Or, How am I going to catch up on all the stuff I'm behind on...)

The Cruise:  Last time we were on a cruise, I got about 3/4 of my reading done, and none of my little projects.  Two Golden Goblin books are on the slate to be read and reviewed, some Savage Rifts conversion material, We have extra time at sea, a simply gigantic balcony, and two kids that can now kept themselves entertained.  I feel confident that something can be accomplished.    I should also have a healthy collection of podcasts to plug in and zone out.  I've got enough of the Campaign Podcast and some Arthur Conan Doyle to listen to all week.  In a perfect world, I anticipate some Rory's Story Cubes, Zombie Dice, and some Rory-influenced Savage Worlds as we chill out in the rooms.  Probably not going to happen.

Cons:  It looks like I'm available for both Fall In! and Mepacon (and don't forget the Weekend).  I'll have some discussions with the team what I'll be running at each.  As always, I forsee a poll on the blog...

Painting: Time to clean up the Spring queue.  Half-finished kid's projects (Millie is actually ahead on Maja this time!), German Gnomes, Blue Martians, and Gnomes of Unusual Size fill up my table. Once I figure a direction Con-wise, I can go further.

Fix the Car, Game Again:  One "final" repair and my commuting only car gets some range to travel finally.  I owe Steve a board game day just so he can play Scythe.  RPG status is still unknown.

Projects for June... and Beyond!
The Pulp Game:  With some role-playing sessions on the boat, I could wrap up the Lost World storyline just after Memorial Day.

Painting:  Outside of German Colonial Rifles, it's all dependant on the convention plans.  Did get a little inspiration for assembling my Kickstarter Jetbikes that to Tim's Miniature Wargaming Blog.

"Pigeon God":  My goal is to finish up five episodes every month.   That will get the episodes in the can up to Christmas before I start my busy season in October.

Other Games:  Looking at last years activity over the summer, outside of my games at The Weekend, I got two Burning Plastic games in, two Legions of Steel/Blue Martian games, a Gnome Wars game, and perhaps the last TIARA game we'll ever play.  Assuming a similar pattern (and getting the Lost Worlds game close to wrapped up in May) I propose the following:
2 gamed to wrap up said Lost World campaign.
3 Burning Plastic gamed (Father's Day?)
1 Gnome Wars game
1 Contemptible Little Armies game using the Samoans.

Maybe we'll get to the Mousling Fantasy campaign.  Balcony discussions with Maja and Millie will determine that next week.

Fear not, dear reader, the blog will not suffer, since I was quite prodigious and diverse in my painting and other articles for the blog.  Seventy-Four posts in June and July combined (and August was #RPGaDay, so that skews the data).

The Chinese Donald Trump of the Walk?

With the Chinese New Year only scant days away, a Chinese shopping mall has commissioned a statue to celebrate the Year of the Rooster with a certain American Presidential bent.
CNN Link
Small souvenir versions of the statue will be available soon, but I will say I need two of these, between 3" and 6" tall.  One to use as-is as a monster of the week, and a second to scuff up, or just paint stone and make it a relic of the pre-apocalypse, to go along with Brigade Games' Post Apoc line.

My Holiday Stream-of-Consciousness Rant.

It's cold and bitter outside.  My seasonal staff is slowly disappearing into the ether they magically came out of a few months ago.   I know the holidays are upon us because the schedules at home are even more impossibly hectic than they were just a few weeks ago.

Perhaps the greatest consolation is that Saturday will be a big day with the family as we're snowed in together.  I'm hoping to finally break out the last of the Christmas decorations, bake some cookies, and all around chill.

Sunday is the last weekend before Christmas, so you know what that means:  It's time to finish up all the games with the girls while my wife is at work.   I'd love to finish up the grand finale of the Blue Martian game, I've got a pulp game that's in the spirit of the holidays, and if I'm pushing my limits, the TMNT Heroclix boxed has one last scenario in it.   Next holiday weekend I hope is filled with Santa's Bag, Zombie Dice, and me opening up a pile of my Kickstarters that just arrived as my Christmas gifts.

Since we've moved into the new house, I've had two gaming-heavy Christmas mornings.  The first year,  my wife went through hell to get my items through Emerald Vale (now Evolution) Games, only to have them arrive on Christmas Eve afternoon.   Last year,  I set up a wishlist on Amazon, and she got everything early... and I mean EVERYTHING on the list.  Funny thing is, I haven't actively used any of last year's gifts.

This year, I gave a list of classic "Dad" gifts (socks, underwear, and a wallet), as well as Rory's story cubes.  I already have my rewards for Tales of the Caribbean, and Savage Rifts waiting at home, unopened, and if I'm lucky, the minis for Songs of Blades: Axe and Brimstone might make it before the Christmas Day.

I'm shocked enough that I actually got to paint something over the past week, and even more pleased that they were the items I needed for the potential year-end games.  My queue has been repositioned and the I just need a snowy day over the holidays to sort out the other half of my bench.

As work is winding down, I'm taking a few moments to clean up the D&D game that I've proposed but none of the players have actually offered approval of.  I'm also perusing the old gaming notebooks that covered things like the Fall-In 2015 shopping list and the last winter's painting queue (about 85% done!)  I'm a bit please a huge swath of notes on Samoa are still intact.  I'll revisit that one day when I need to fill out a Pulp Figures order (and a small Foundry order for the paint).

Despite using a notebook for some of my gaming projects, a lot of my behind-the-scenes work is done on this blog.  This post is my 1,835th on my blog.  I've got another 50 pending for a future date.  Some of those are time-sensitive, like holiday posts while others are simply working ahead (I've got five more posts ready just for December).  What's overwhelming me are the 190 drafts on file.  Some are placeholders for games (the Blue Martian game and Christmas game are set up, complete with links to where I stole my inspiration from.)   I've also got all my future Gnome Wars articles, future Savage Rifts scenarios, TONS of pulp ideas, Heroclix games, and general want lists at my fingertips.  I expect about 80% to see the light of day.

What to expect through the holidays and into the deep of Winter?    After completing the sci-fi and Heroclix storylines, I'd love to wrap up the Savage Showdown Pulp game and move it into the next "volume."    From there, I'd like to set up and stat out the Mousling Fantasy game, keep fleshing out Gnomish North America, and paint more gnomes for the Gnome Wars mega-game at Cold Wars in March.

Pikachu, the Secret Masters Choose You!

I wouldn't be surprised when the true Illuminati reveal they've been brainwashing children with Pokémon television and CCG products for years, only to have the true evil manifest in some future update of Pokémon Go!

I just wish the tin-foil hat fans of the theory could construct a half-decent website containing some logical (if flawed) explanations.

Without chemtrails to pontificate about, they'll need something to do.

Or perhaps that's exactly what the Secret Masters were planning for them to do!

Conspiracy Jones and the Tin-Foil Techno Mages

I admit to being a political junkie as a youth, more time watching C-SPAN than watching football.  I loved the political negotiation and maneuvering, people knowing when to stand firm, and when to compromise at a position still to their advantage.

Twenty-five years later, and all those lessons have been "reformed" and we're stuck with sides of absolutists, and not enough practical moderates to slap some sense back into them.

I admit that I have no horse, pony, mule, burro, greyhound, pigeon, parakeet, Greyhound bus, or camel in this year's presidential race.  But seeing this guy behind Wolf Blitzer while he was doing a show plug during the Democratic National Convention makes me wonder if the Illuminati are pulling too many strings... and not caring about the results.

Seriously, this dude stared into the camera like that for the entire 30-second spot!   Between the straw boater, the shiny eyeglasses, and the blue linen suit, this guy is obviously either a time traveler who doesn't know how to blend in, or perhaps he's a techno-mage, casting spells in HD through the TV.   Perhaps he's a retainer in Hillary's shadow war, trying too hard because Trump's techno-mages have had a head start and are better staffed.

Are there certain political cabals to aid the Democrats, or is each a spellslinger for hire, contracting their particular set of skills to the highest bidder?

Did Senator Sanders actually hire psionic pyromancers so his supporters could actually "Feel the Bern?"

These are questions to must be answered in some sort of game before Election Day!

Pokemon Go Away!

This is no way a political blog, and quite frankly, I unfriend most of my acquaintances on Facebook who have crazy fringe beliefs, but looking through my feed over the last week, the three biggest topics were

#3 - Hillary Clinton.  Makes sense, regardless of your personal opinion on the matter.
#2-  Every single shooting that made the news last week... COMBINED.

#1 - Freakin' Pokémon Go.

The short, short version of this phenomena, by my skewed understanding?

Pokémon Go is a game app you can download to your phone.  You are a Pokémon trainer who seeks out these adorable Japanese creatures to train (and I hope ultimately put in brutal death matches).    While some of the Nintendo games had multi-player interaction capabilities, this is game has the Pokémon existing in real-time around the real world.

Seriously, there could be a Charmander sitting right next you, right now (electronically of course) and you wouldn't know it unless you downloaded the app right now!!!!   These critters could be around the corner, in the local supermarket, or in a nearby park.   Your little character avatar doesn't travel that location to capture it in-game, you yourself, must physically travel to that location to capture it.

And guess what?  All the other Pokémon players know it's there too.  And if news reports and social media are correct, they're coming to get it RIGHT NOW!   Catch 'em all, post-haste!

Even with talking to a few casual players (one who realized she was sitting on one in her booth at Ruby Tuesday over the weekend) I'm not sure as to the actual mechanics of capturing these little buggers, but the game has swept a sizable percentage of the population

I get it, I get it.  It's not a sedentary activity.  Parents are praising the game for getting their kids off the couch and going outside, although I have had confirmed reports of random kids knocking on strangers' doors to ask permission to capture the Pokémon in their backyard.  It's a social activity, to boot, as friends join forces to search for the creatures.

I work in a downtown location, right on the town square, and the true reality of Pokemon was apparent as I took a walk across the square to grab a coffee.

Between the paving operations going on, and the usual characters we've nicknamed "Squarians" it's an adventure out there to begin with.  Today, I nearly got run over by a kid flying down the sidewalk on his skateboard, fully engrossed on his cellphone.   Then I looked around and noticed packs of people wandering across the grass of the square, eyes locked onto the screens.  Like extras on the Walking Dead, they would stop, suddenly change directions, and shamble on until they reached their destinations.  Upon further inspection, I realized that there were about three dozen of these glassy-eyed individuals roaming the center of the square, with at least another dozen stumbling around the outer sidewalks.  Can't wait to see how this new phenomenon works when the Farmer's Market comes to town on Thursday, with a few hundred other people in attendance.

Perhaps the best definition I've come across is randomly generated geo-caching.   Except if this many people were actually geo-caching, we'd a huge increase in emergency calls as these people wandered the edges of the wilderness.

It's not that I don't understand Pokémon.   I've been forced to deal with the American side of this media juggernaut from the first day some piece of merchandise hit our shores, and I dealt with the early days of the Pokémon Collectible Card Game.  Sure, money was made at the time, but I defaulted to retail child care or parental therapist and that sucked out a piece of my soul I will never get back.  You can't be a drug dealer and have a conscience.

And I understand the fun and addiction of game apps.  I've had a thorough interest in Mafia and Farm-style games on Facebook.  I may have crushed some candy in my day (The Frozen version was more fun, in my opinion).  I still have a Civilization-style game on my phone that does not have the Governator in a poorly fitting military uniform, or an open display of Kate Upton's boobs.   Heck I still have NCAA Football on my phone, from 2010 (Tebow's on the opening page).

The tin-foil hat conspiracy theorists are always claiming that media tells us what's important.   After seeing the news feeds over the last few days, I'm happy my wife picked up a new roll, because I may need to make my own metal chapeau.  This is a herd mentality that could be used for good (put in polling places in November) or neutral (yay, capitalism), the sheer scope of this craze and the possibility for nefarious purposes (or mass stupidity) is there, but even worse, I see this as an easy way to make the world far more apathetic than I could possibly imagine before this past weekend.

Whether it's cops killing people, people killing cops, countries wishing to wreck economic unity, civil war (or the Zika virus) spreading like a plague around the world, everything takes a backseat to finding a Wartotle outside a public library... or at the corner of a drug house.

Thank God we've always been at war with Eurasia....

If this doesn't calm down, I'm going rent a Pikachu costume and dance across Public Square.  Either the players will be so engrossed in their phones that they'll ignore me, proving my worries,  or they will become incensed that there's a Pokémon that's not coming up on their screen.    Hopefully the penalty for inciting a riot isn't too bad.
