Dollar Tree Airlines and Burying the Lead

Even when there's a surprising ending, I can't catch a break.

Yesterday was supposed to be a simple process:  Work till 5, drive down to my mother's to fix her lawn mower and cut the never-ending grass that's been growing with all this relentless rain.  With that off my list, I could enjoy the penultimate weekend of AAU basketball with Child #2 (Millie), and stay local no less!

And then my work had to do something stupid like include me as part of a 20% overall workforce reduction across the company at a 3:30pm conference call.

Horrendous news, of course, but I can get down to my mom's early now, so that's a silver lining, right?

Nope, Child #1 (Maja) got dropped off for her play rehearsal 45 minutes early in the bad part of town, and the doors are locked. Dad's now hanging around town to ensure the doors are open and I'm taking her home afterwards.

So with two hours to kill, I ventured into the pit of hell itself: Hobby Lobby.

I'm a Michael's guy myself, and have used plenty of coupons over the years for brushes and paint, but the the brushes have been incredibly sparse or poorly made in the past few months, and I've seen entire racks of a color of paint be dried out and cracked.    So far the 20/0 spotters I like using from the HobLob have held up, so I budgeted four more (at 40% off what the Michael's equivalents are) to ensure one major product gets done before my severance even kicks in, as well as some craft sticks to finish a second.

The only other visit I did was to Dollar Tree.  The buck and a quarter stores around her, and around my mom's have been desolate of anything that not summer or graduation-related, and I saw some conversions of sand castle making toys into proper castle and castle wall game pieces, so I perused a little harder.

No castles, but long-time pulp character Ted Mosby, Aviator at least has some pretend glass to block the wind (and water)!

I don't really have any seaplane scenarios in the immediate future, but things could change.

And yes, I made airplane noises as I pretended to fly it in my hand.  Watch out, I may PEW PEW PEW you with finger guns, or make lightsaber sounds with a wiffleball bat.

A couple positives:  I was there less than a year, but I still get a severance to get me through June, and five months of sales commissions all at once, rather than Q1 arriving mid-June and Q2 in September..    Historicon for Maja and I is still a go, come Hell or high water.  We weren't living a glamourous lifestyle there anyway, although if we have room in the car, I might use the Sunday flea market to liquidate some of the lead pile and other things.

(Painting) D&D Myconid Adults by WizKids

After my recent rant of over a decade of Reaper Bones, I've surprised myself with the few D&D Nolzur's Marvelous Miniatures I've acquired.  The pre-primed minis are ridiculously adhesive to paint.  The Myconid Adults were a quick base, wash, drybrush, flock, seal.

WizKids 73405
There's been many waves of Nolzur's figures over the years, and beyond a small and expected price hike to the earlier blisters still in production, I have notice some scale shrinkage, particularly with the the 50th Anniversary-branded products.  I daresay those figures are as close to true 25mm in fantasy that we've seen in the past 25 years.

Next:  Gamorreans and Gnomes, as we get closer to Historicon, Perhaps some extra terrain for the City of Carf

Project 350: It's a glacial pace down to 468 (292/176) from 469 (294/175).  So long as I keep my Gamma world Actual Plays up to date, I'm simply going to target one idea/session in drafts each week, and take the steps to execute it.

(Painting) All My Ducks in a Row

One thing that has made me keep my opinions to myself about the kids schooling, is the fact that they they do give the kids a dive into home ec, shop, and stem-adjacent activities.  Both have used 3-D printing in class.  Maja used it in a design presentation for a marketing mini-course, and Millie... Millie was just being Millie.

This year's computers overview course in junior high had a portion on 3-D printing.  One day, as I Ubered her between practices, she handed me a little duck form, obviously printed.    The next time, I got another, then another, then, as that block of instruction finished, she handed me three more.  Each student was supposed to have the machine print off one of half-dozen designs.  The rules be damned, every time there was downtime in class, she slide another into the queue.

And before she moves to Upstate New York at the end of the month, I handed her a minis case with the six complete.

The stl files were pretty chunky, too much to file down, but they were also not to bad when compared to some other pieces we've acquired.

In the Queue: Gnomes,  Lots of Terrain for Carf, and two amusing men.

Another Month of Gaming (June 2025)

We're getting pretty close to GenCon again, and the latest issue of Game Trade Magazine with the summer solicitations is chock full of questionable decisions.  So many games, so many fly-by-night game creators.  So much stuff that, even with two page articles describing some of this stuff, they're questionable consumer purchases, much less the store owner or manager whose deciding whether or not to stock in in the first place.

Truth be told, there's a LOT of stuff I left out under "The Imaginary Store List" that might suit your own personal tastes.  Check out Issue #304 of Game Trade Magazine  your FLGS or online in pdf form here, and place a pre-order through you preferred ordering method.

It's been awhile since the Dead Milkmen penned "Lair of the Bitchin' Chimera" so I'm surprised the next RPG from a band is a 90's noir urban fantasy.  How do you get a wary player or game shop owner, for that matter, order a boxed set?  The three part story with 60 hours of gameplay adds value to something that might otherwise be an impulse buy or curiosity.  Getting your group together to play this (or anything, for that matter)?  That's entirely up to you.

(Gamma World) This is Not a Test #78 - The Ringing of the Gongs

Our heroes, the De Facto Explorers,  have returned to Riverbend.  War is in the air downriver and the participants are still largely unknown.  After a family dinner, three strange human individuals have shown up on the farm. Sonny and Squiggle's children take refuge in.

=================

Sneaky Pete: A mutated weasel scout.  Pete's telepathy and night vision take a backseat when he whips out his electrical powers.

Sonny Helianthus: a nearly 10' tall sentient sunflower artifact examiner with trusted Restorationist ties. Knowledgeable,  but not a good one with device repairs or upgrades. Just went out of his comfort zone to rescue Lathar from becoming a human sacrifice to "The Beast."

Slitheran Wurmtail (aka Squiggles): a mutated earthworm scout, in impromptu power armor, looking for trouble, and finding it often.   He  has been subject to genetic testing and developed super-human strength, a more human body, and a thick coat of shaggy white hair.

Lathar Bracken: A pure-strain human from River Bend.  He's got the muscle, the face, and a mount for most encounters.  Lathar's trusty beast of burden, No Name, travels wherever he does.   Looking for trouble in all the right places.  Former jousting champion of Fair-Town.

================================================================\

The three people the Explorers encountered emerging from the woods near Yulius' farm were all human, battered and cut, but otherwise intact.  They were certainly confused to have reached civilization.  They claimed their town, far over the mountains, was attacked by a large group of mutated sub-men.  Their own militia, armed with "guns and bullets" were simply overwhelmed by the primitives.   Five of them had fled the town and headed over the mountains, yet a smaller group of sub-men and their hunting beasts seemed to be slowly hunting them.  In the last five days or so, they had managed to pick off two of them, leaving Danny, Sarah, and Evelyn.

Peter was quite insistent to take them all to leader of the militia, Loman Streight.   Sonny had issues with the lack of a power structure and travelled over to the Restorationists to force an audience with Justinian.

At Ascension Hall, Sonny was banging on the doors, demanding an audience with their leader, Justinian.

Gaining an audience Justinian already knew Sonny's purprose.  "I hope you're here to confirm what this young wormling was telling me about strangers, sub-men, and hunting beasts.

Sonny saw Double Fatso, one of Squiggles' spawn, hiding behind the Restorationist's leader.

Double Fatso, spawn of Squiggles....

Sonny and Justinian exchanged platitudes to each other, while the leader countered with simple question, like what the new human's town is called.  Justinian seemed concerned, particularly why the sub-men were "playing with their food."  Perhaps the humans were being used for a far more nefarious purpose.

Justinian bestowed the honor to Double Fatso of the ringing of the Ascension Gong, alerting all the Restorationists in town to come and defend the hall, and possibly the town, if things went sour.   He recommended to Sonny that the humans be given food and shelter, but it things seemed grim, sending these odd refugees on a raft across the river might save many lives.

Back in town, Pete dragged Squiggles and Lathar with him to escort the three humans to Loman.  Sitting in front of the trading post, Loman saw the Explorers escorting the three muddy, exhausted individuals and pondered leaving quickly.

He didn't, and Peter took control, providing details on the viable threat on the town.

Loman didn't buy the strangers' stories at all.  He found it wildly unlikely that a bookkeeper, a schoolteacher, and a geologist were being playfully used as target practice by some primitive mutant culture.

Loman Streight, apathetic militia leader

Pete was incensed that Loman wasn't willing to raise the alarm without further information.   "He's a moron!"  he confided with Squiggles.     It was bad enough that there were no fortifications in the area, but the militia seemed completely unprepared for even the least competent threat.  The weasel kept prodding the trio for more information, and they were somewhat forthcoming with limited information.

Pete heard a gong off to the distance.  It wasn't the drill bell that called the militia to arms, but it sounded like a good idea to have Lathar work door to door to recall as many defenders as possible.

Squiggles was in complete disagreement with the plans, finding the humans completely unreliable, and raising the alarm for the militia was irresponsible.  After just arriving in town and warning many of the war to downriver and potential hordes of refugees, the citizenry might already throw a deaf ear towards another alleged threat.

Pete agreed that Squiggles and he should scout out the surrounding environs for these sub-men, but the weasel already advised Lathar to start putting the militia on alert.

Lathar's recruitment was quite sluggish.  Most of the doors he knocked on resulted in more genial conversation and catch-up with the "world traveler" Lathar.    The efforts are slow-going, with many questions.

Pete and Squiggles used their scouting talents to good use.  The did confirm the tracks of the humans, usually single file through the path of least resistance through the woods.

Back in the village, Sonny has taken the trio of humans to the Keg for blankets, warmer clothes, a warm spot by the hearth, and some bread and broth.  The humans were quite appreciative.  The humans were still elusive with their details of the chase.  Sonny found them to be inconsistent but also exhausted... and quite distracted, as he continued to nervously look around.  Danny, the male of the group, tried to speak for all three, when he stated, "I'd like to not get hunted anymore and rest.  If it's not safe here, then we'll go on our way. "

Lathar's recruitment efforts were thwarted by the the biggest supporter in Squiggle's family.   "Ammo Gal"  had found steady work helping out the militia, but the musket ball inventory was heavily scrutinized with the fear that all the militia showed up.  Rationing would be needed until a solid and steady count could muster.

The scouts continued to backtrack the journey of their next visitors.  No obvious encounters were noted, the humans had kept their pace pretty consistent, doing their best to avoiding mud, mires, and obstructions.  Without seeing anything outrageous confirming their claims, they debated camping out or heading back to Riverbend.  Squiggles was quite worried about the potential powder-keg in town, and that they had left Sonny and Lathar in charge.

Lathar took control of some of the squad leaders to set up patrols, post individuals at the top of buildings.  After they are set up, he worked with Ammo Gal to finish distributing ammo, rations, and supplies.

Squiggles and Pete arrived at the town with the militia listless and sipping on booze around large fires.  They ventured into town to find Sonny actually had eight of the militia drinking at the Keg, regaling tales!

It was Sonny would have a odd repetitive sound off in the distance, he quickly grabbed the militia and emerged from the Keg, ready for action.  The weasel and worm followed, and once they were outside they caught the end of a loud, repetitive series of pops.    It sounded like some form of fighting near Ascension Hall and the defending Restorationists.

Sonny rallied his Charisma Check (Nat 1 sucess!)  and the militia moved forward.    The action at Ascension Hall seemed to have concluded, with a handful of Restorationists carefully moving upriver along the road.

A step behind his men, Sonny maneuvered his men towards Farmer Yulius' farm.  In the back area, they discovered a large beast around the old shack a smaller Sonny had called home.

This wolf-like creature, five foot at the shoulder, part of it's fur appeared to.... shimmer.

In its massive mouth was the feeble body of one of the children of Squiggles.

It was Twitchy, the British speaking worm, who only could emit, "Manchi.... I tried..." before expiring in the beast's mouth.

*DRAMATIC PAUSE*

GM Notes:  Sonny's moment of bravery, bounding out of the Keg, earned him a round of parody honors on ChatGPT, a la Gaston, from Beauty and the Beast.

Painting Up Some Junk with My Racoon Friend

It was supposed to a completely empty weekend for me.  The girls were in Upstate New York with their mother.  I had anticipated grabbing some chips and continuing to push through the lead pile, some for Historicon, some for other projects I'm pushing through in record time.

Then Maja reminded all of us she had play rehearsal, for that one final play she wanted to do before they officially moved up there.

Friday night and Saturday morning, I let Maja life her best life as a teenager.  Doordash then lock the doors, the house entirely to herself. I was able to knock out some of that painting AND start pushing down the backlog of posts without adding to any. By the time I needed to go get her at noon on Saturday, I felt positive about my projects AND I got two Georic Gazetteer entries finished... and they were entries on my personal production schedule, not just stuff on a whim!

After dropping her off at rehearsal, I went back to the apartment and finished up a different type of painting project, cleaning up my mailbox.

I have a very laissez-faire relationship with the landlord, so I knew he'd never get around to replacing or at least cleaning up and repainting my beat up mailbox on the front of the yard.

After work on Friday, I had pulled the box off the front and proceeded to brush, chip, and sand the rust  and failing paint off.  Barely getting a coat of paint out of white can of spray, gave me a double excuse to go to Walter's Hardware in Wilkes-Barre.

When I still worked downtown, I loved to visit Walter's.  It was the classic small-town hardware store in the center of the city, PLUS an entire wing dedicated to model trains and RC cars and planes.

It was fun to wander around, but it was my go-to spot for Zap-A-Gap at a reasonable price.  In recent weeks I finally used my small can of Zap-Kicker Accelerant for an annoying project, and between the spray paint, the accelerant, and some new numbers for the box, I'd be golden.

I completely forgot that they were retiring and closing the shop, probably before July 4th.

Completely bummed I was quickly soothed to see a 15% discount off of everything, not that I had a budget for much more.

The can of Zap-Kicker I just used up lasted me at least 8 years.

I now won't run out of the stuff until 2041.

Of course, things couldn't go smoothly.  Apparently I failed to hold open for the customer behind me.  Luckily they got a hand on the door before it closed and they snuck inside, proceeding to raise a ruckus.

A racoon followed me into a very urban hardware store.

Apparently it wasn't a first time, and the folks there quickly found boxes and relocated the perturbed shopper, letting me finish my errands in piece.

Four coats of paint later, I think freshly white non-rusty mailbox will last at least the year.

After picking up Maja from rehearsal, we sat down and had some much-needed pizza, took a quick nap, talked about the convention, and actually got her to the painting bench for HER items.

Looks like we'll get two pretty detailed terrain pieces onto table for Historicon, allowing for a significant plot point to develop further.

I don't know if we're getting any gaming in this weekend, but having the kids' work on their own stuff is more important to me, especially with her two big games she's running in Lancaster.

Wooden Ships and Electronic Auctions

I had enough childhood influences that made transitioning to wargaming plausible.  Tons of books on war, and war movies on Saturday afternoon.  My grandfather's train set was my pinnacle, although I did plenty of role-playing with the HO-layout in my own basement.  Plenty of green army men and Britains.

There was also my Uncle Geoff, who was a master modeler of all sorts of kits.  I only saw flashes of his hobby room when I was a kid, but when he came up to visit years ago, right when I was doing my Tanga Campaign in the garage.   He had a lot questions, and we shared a lot of notes, drinking excellent beer.

He passed away a few years after.  My aunt relocated to Pittsburgh to be closer to her kids, but she still brought him with her.  No, not a classy urn, just the hundreds of model kits from the hobby room.  Many of the smaller kits got donated, but she reached out to me a few weeks ago to help her get rid of the rest, a few kits at a time.

The first wave I've received are your classic Snap-Tite car kits from the 80s....

So many ships.   Just started doing research, but these ladies are fetching $100-150 apiece when I find them.

Anyone interested is more than willing to make an offer, hit me up.  Otherwise, I'll be on eBay under viscounteric, casual buyer/seller since at least 1999.

(Painting) Cyb-Orc Scout

I am cleaning off random stuff, and to be honest, I don't know where he's come from, but he's been a staple of the painting bench queue since I was still working out of the basement.

Part of the three orc Scout Team from RAFM's Star Khan sci-fi line.  The minis are very busy, and I'm not too thrilled with them.   This might help explain why I never was a big fan of 40k Orks.

In my Death Planet Iota skirmish games orckind are all Martians, so Orks are brown, whereas Gretchin are blue, probably got that from my D&D campaign world, where orcs are brown skinned "off the earth" people and not all wild humanoid savages.

(Painting) Kemper Episcopalian Medical Militia for Gnome Wars

As I mentioned when I unveiled most of the command group for the Kemper Episcopalian Medical Militia, episode #620 of Ken and Robin Talk About Stuff was a tour de force:  character sheet design,  the sunken city of Rungholt, designer  Anthony Joyce-Rivera, and spiritualist medical grave robber Joseph Nash McDowell.

For months, it's been a slow burn, setting up the gnomish exploration Dr. McDowell forming a medical militia  (Episcopalian, to counter the growing Catholic medical college across the river.)

The paint scheme was inspired by Captain Jack Dinero, part of the Four Lone Rangers.  Obviously his stories are legendary, but he most certainly spent some time in the "Show-Me" Republic.

The collected unit is well over 320 points for a Gnome Wars game.  For unit building purposes treat all figures as normal Southern gnomes, except.

Dr McDowell - 40 pts
Cinnamon the Bear - 30pts
Jed Sawbuck - 20 pts

This puts me over 100 figures for the year, the first time since the latter half of COVID!  We'll see what else we can put together for Historicon.

Next:  Gamorreans, Cultists, Zulus.  Outside of a flag for the unit, this finished project creates a huge empty swath on the bench.

Project 350: Holding steady at 469 (294/175)  from at 469  (294/175)

(Kickstarter) Gone Bee Keepin' - Cozy D&D 5e One-Shot

I certainly love some good $1 pdf modules from Kickstarter.  In Gone Bee Keepin' - Cozy D&D 5e One-Shot for 5e, the characters help an overwhelmed gnome beekeeper with harvesting the honey.

That's it.

For a dollar (or more, it's technically Pay What You Want), I'm probably going to get three sessions of this in my Gamma World campaigns.

They're also offering the other "cozy" one-shots, dealing with fishing, antiquing, snowball fights, speed dating, and pub crawling.

(Georic Gazetteer) Kingdom of Aragain

 Kingdom of Aragain

Pantheon: Ferasean (Akana) w/ Xellenistic influences
Ruled By:  Queen Petrilla and Prince Consort Hondolus
Capital:  Aragain City
Other Cities:  Taurplaux, Barchant
Language:  Crosedean w/ a hint of Isptalian dialect along the coast
Flag/Emblem:
Coinage: Crosedean Standard
Important Personas:  Prince Ultrecht Aragain of Arinka, Prince-Consort Hondulos,
Alliances:   Trade with Crosedes, Opening relations with the Mago.
Hostilities:  None at the moment
Open Warfare/Skirmishing:  Only in the royal court of intrigue
Intrigues:  Marriages with neighboring countries to solidify influence.
Demi-Humans:   Dwarves in the mountains, Kobold along the coast.
Magickal Devices:  Sword of Tilling (+3 Longsword),  Chalice of Aether, Turtle Golem, and Medallion of Heroes.

Thumbnail Sketch:
Aragain was named after Aragain "The Unyielding", a ranger of repute who was a valued ally and good friend to Emperor Leif III of Feraso. Aragain was granted the entirety of the Giantspire Mountains, or well as title of King from the Emperor, and the kingdom has served as a mighty buffer from Senzar influence ever since.   There was still a faint hint of the Bloodblade bloodline of Feraso, as Aragain and Leif's descendants were quite close, and marriage was common, up until 50 years ago.

While the average layman associates the mountains with this country, and for good reason, the majority of the population resides in the bucolic valleys along the southern base. fields of various grains, and lush orchards dot the countryside.

Aragain has become a volatile country with multiple members of the royal family grabbing Senzar nobility within their colonies.  Queen Petrilla herself has married Hondolus, a Senzar Prince from their colonies, and has heavily influenced the Queen towards healthy relations with the Senzar Empire.  Prince Ultrecht Aragain of Arinka , a nephew of Queen Petrilla, has played a foil to the Prince-Consort, recently married Princess Cassandra from Crosedes, despite being seventh in succession for the throne.
Ultrecht's machinations have restricted Hondolus' influence, eliminated the Council of Nine, a ruling body of nobility that handled day-to-day affairs, and has guaranteed that Petrilla's descendants will have much more power on the throne.

Aragain will surprise a new traveler.  Most of the army is mounted, led by the Knights of the Spiral Hawk,  much of the navy actually sails windships out of Barchant.   The port city of Velandro is home to the Archbishop of Aragain, Theron "Brightscales" who also acts as headmaster of a peculiar academy.

Aragain produces an uncomfortably large cohort of Paladins of Akana, and the religious center in Velandro is one of two complexes that produce kobold paladins.

Religion: Akana is the state faith, although Ferasean mythos has a presence.  Velandro has a history of Ispatlian and Argivian influence, largely left in the architecture, but the temples are still intact, and the one to Poseidon is popular among sailors.

Geography of Note:

The Giantspire Mountain Range: Slightly shorter than the Skyforge Mountains, the Giantspire is the natural border for Aragain and Crosedes, and hosts many secrets, including dragons, giants, and ancient lairs.

It is unsure if Verisom, the Green Dragon, or the Aragain cavalry are more surprised with this encounter.

Interra's Forge of the Five Elements: Interra was an influx of Wyrmnalian Dwarves after the arrival of Aragain I.  They assimilated into the dwarven kingdoms and drew heavily from Senzar architecture.  Within its depths is the Forge of Five Elements.  Rumored to be powered by the still-beating hearts of multiple dragons, even mundane items forged there are known to be legendary.
The Dwarven City of Interra

The Cathedral of Starlight in Velandro:   This grand cathedral, inspired by Archbishop, is in it's earliest stages of construction, but their is a large temple to Akana already constructed.  The plans for the cathedral include magic animation of the stained glass and a magically translucent roof to see the stars.  It is rumored that once completed,  prayers offered to Akana here will be answered more swiftly by the gods. The cathedral currently house the elder kobolds committed to theological and military training.

The Golden Grove of Guya:  A mystical forest where every tree has golden leaves that shimmer in the moonlight. The grove is inhabited by enchanted creatures such as fey and talking animals, and its heart is guarded by a powerful dryad queen, Arandelle. The grove is a source of powerful healing herbs and potions, which are sought after by alchemists and healers across the land.   The Golden Grove is a sacred place, under the protection of the dryad's minions, and many druids.

White Plume Mountain:  White Plume Mountain is a legendary destination for adventurers seeking fame, fortune, and danger. Rising high into the sky, the mountain is crowned by a perpetual column of steam, a beacon for those brave enough to explore its depths. Inside, the twisting, treacherous tunnels are home to cunning traps, ancient puzzles, and deadly guardians. But the true allure lies within—three powerful and ancient weapons, hidden away in this volcanic labyrinth, waiting for those who can claim them. Dare to enter, and you might leave as a legend—or never leave at all.

Summer Gnome Homes for Down the Shore

Had to take some time off for some inevitable paperwork, so I made a few fun stops along the way.

I was disappointed that there still wasn't anything new and exciting at Dollar Tree, although the Beach/Summer Themed Gnome homes from their Fairy Garden line showed up on the shelves.

I'm barely up to speed with my Gnome America units, much like painting up some rubber crabs for beach battles... yet.

Michael's is in that odd space of graduation season, and the Summer not filling up all of the Easter shelves.  I had $10 in rewards so I filled up on clearance craft paint at $0.25-$0.50 for small bottles to $3.00 for big one.  Their brush selection was worthless, and I couldn't even get 2" wooden discs.  I settled for two new brushes and a pile of paint for $4.22.

So I swallowed my pride and went to Hobby Lobby.  So much stuff, so many clueless people wandering the store like crafting zombies.  I could only find my wooden discs in an overpriced assortment pack, but they did have the spotter brushes I like to use and abuse, and two bucks cheaper than Michael's to boot!

The real impulse buy was as I was wrapping up my workday and checked eBay on a whim (and to clean off my search results).  Lo' and behold, there was 1 results under my saved search for "Scrunts"

I now am the proud owner of nine Bob Olley Texan Scrunts:
There's a lot on my plate to finish for Historicon, but like the Brigade Games order that created the Episcopalian Medical Melita for Gnome Wars, these guys need to get bumped to the front of the line for our western board Saturday morning and afternoon.

(Gamma World) This is Not a Test #77 - The Return of Manchi

Our heroes, the De Facto Explorers,  are on their way home from a roundabout series of adventures in the ultra-modern KIA Academy.  War is in the air, and the participants are still largely unknown.  The party has stopped off in Fair-Town, to rest a day or two before the last stretch of their journey back to RiverBend.

=================

No Name has recently been fitted for a artillery device of the Ancients that chucks spears further than any human.  Looking for trouble in all the right places.  Former jousting champion of Fair-Town.  He had fallen in love with Elona, the leader of the blue-skinned Kirothians, until he was ceremoniously dumped by her once they reached Fair-Town.

================================================================

With everyone accounted for in the Ye New Leaping Happy Eagle, the Explorers slept well, and had all their members ready for the day at breakfast.

Sneaky Pete broke out his mandolin and jammed with a few locals by the hearth.  His new and proper instrument was a vast improvement.

The journey to Riverbend was quiet... and quite muddy.   Squiggles was in heaven.   There were a few hearty souls heading to Fair-Town, but they passed no one heading upriver.

Once back in Riverbend, Sonny obtained an audience with Justinian with the Restorationists and filled him in on the breaking news in K.I.A. Academy.  Justinian expressed worry, but not all-out panic.  Pete tried to add all of Lathar's side-quests to the worries, but Sonny had him hold back.  "There's enough on their plate with the possible invasion, don't complicate things for them."

Everyone was hungry, so the next stop was Lathar's mom's house.  They walked in the front door, the lone keg of mead being used as an end table, but the lighting was different.  The side window had been replaced with an elaborate stained glass window or a familiar friend:

Lathar's mom was in the kitchen, working on another piece of stained glass.

Lathar's Mom: "Lathar, you're back?  You don't look good at all.  Let me feed you....   I bet Sonny's mom doesn't have to complain, he's growing like a weed."

Sonny: "Mrs Lathar's Mom, I've told you before, that's a racial slur."

Lathar:  "Okay, Mom, what's up with the window."

Lathar's Mom:  "After Chambray, I figured the nicest thing would be to make the window for him"

Lathar:  "What happened to Chambray?"

Lathar's Mom pointed outside"  "Look for yourself,"

Peering outside, the whole crew saw the peacock, wandering the backyard, with a tin-can on stuck over his head....

Lathar's Mom:  "Your animal's dumb, honey."

Next was a visit to the Leaping Drunken Keg, to see Squiggles daughter, Sophie the Keg, and see if they had money for the keg of mead the explorers had sold them.

As they neared the Keg, Squiggles could see his child, Buster, physically tossed out of the building, drunk and obviously beaten up.  Despite the worm's pleadings, Squiggles ignored him.

Sophie the Keg was behind the bar, polishing glasses.  "Manchi, you got so oooooold...."

Sophie tried to fill Squiggles in with the whereabouts of his kids.  Buster was a drunk, Soprano marched out of town in the middle of the winter, and the rest never came along to the Keg.

Squiggles warned his favorite worm of the impending war.  The only solution he offered was to run away, with the offspring found unacceptable.

Moving onto the trading post, they found the shelves bare, and an ornery worm, Squiggles' son Grocer, moving crates of items they do have in stock.   Grocer was quite indignant that Squiggles had returned, and Squiggles was amused that his child got tattoos.

Finding out the fates of some of his other children, Squiggles thought it right and proper to have a family dinner out at Farmer Yulius' farm.

The best news that came out of that day was that the White Hand had spent the coldest part of the winter in Riverbend, so the Explorers finally be one-hundred percent for the first time in weeks.

The Explorers separated, Pete off to work on his tree house, Lathar back to his mom's, while Sonny and Squiggles did venture out to Farmer Yulius'.  Heading out to old shed they had both considered home, neither of them noticed the noises coming out of the shed. Inside were a bunch of his fat, lazy children:  Speedy, Fatso, and Twitchy

"Sonny!!!!!!"

These three worms were all unemployed and still "living at home".  The very British-sounding Twitchy was the most enthused for family dinner.

On Sunday, many of the townsfolk join the the Wurmtail family with their dinner.  All twelve of the children remaining in town made an appearance.  There was an airing of grievances, feats of strength, and even one of them brought a pole to dance around.  The House of Squiggles was together once again.

Fatso, Speedy, Grocer, and Twitchy.
The end of the dinner was interrupted by the appearance of the three individuals emerging out of the tree line.  All three, one male, two female, looked human and seemed more confused than disheveled.

GM Notes: There's a lot going on in Gamma World right now, but one point that might be getting overlooked in the actual play is Sonny's height.  Sentient plants in fourth edition height is equal to one meter per five points of CON.  Plants also gain +1 CON (to the stat) per level gained, so all sentient plants grow over the the course of the campaign.

At the start of the campaign, Sonny was the tallest, gangliest of the De Facto Explorers, similar to actor Stephen Merchant.  Since then, the characters have advanced considerably and now Sonny towers over even the biggest humans on the planet.

Sonny vs a puny human.

The Event List for Historicon 2025 is Up on Tabletop Events!

Ever since Cold Wars, the event listing for Historicon 2025 have been slowly growing over at Tabletop Events.  With the cut-off for free GM Admission this past Friday, it's a perfect time to review what's online, providing ViscountEric's preferred games (and the ones the Stout Gnomes are running)

Even picking up some more of the tricks of the trade with the website, I still find Tabletop subpar and deceptively non-intuitive.  I'm also a bit sore that last year, my events never made the transition from Tabletop to the site book, and while I still averaged over a dozen players per game for each event, people complained... to me at least.

As always, these are the events that interest ME, and if I wasn't running a full weekend, might ponder registering for.  Many of these events are run multiple times over the weekend.  I'm only listing the one session to that I noticed first.  I did my best to label Mulitple Sessions, but use the search function to find events with multiple runnings over the weekend!

The Stout Gnomes selections, as always, are listed in red.

(Edit: The War College and Hobby U events just posted up. I'll do my best to add my a few notable ones to the list, but no promises)

Sunday

(536) Ooh Shiny!
Sunday 12pm, 2hrs, 6 tickets, Presenter: Dennis Jensen
In this class we will learn how to paint metallic items with more than dry brushing, and while we are at it we will paint gemstones!

I know I said might not add Hobby U Painting classes, and this could be a typo, but Hobby U is usually packed up and ready to get loaded by this time on a Sunday.  I don't want to stay till noon, but I also want there to be a useful Sunday at the con, not the normal hangover-related wandering of the vendor hall and flea market and get on the road by 10.
