Mandatory Basketball Rant - Winter 2023-24 #2

We're finally in the thick of the season at all levels!

Local Rec League:  I've stepped back in my duties, but I still find myself at one of the schools by 9am on a Saturday.  All the "improvements" that the board try to improvise either barely work or are dead on arrival.

Varsity:  The basketball moms were in an uproar around the New Year, when all the local sports Facebook pages didn't have Maja's varsity team in the Top 15... and they had three wins against teams in the rankings.  They're 6-3 with all three losses against teams from outside the district.  Last year, they'd carry a ten-point lead into the 4th quarter, and lose by 15.  This year, two losses were buzzer beaters, and the third loss they had managed to tie at the buzzer before losing in overtime.  Culture and talent have definitely improved.

Maja's most recent game was against Tunkhannock, and she got significant varsity time and finally scored her first varsity points!

JV:  Injuries and Varsity time has dropped the JV squad to 6 or 7 players, similar to last year.  Maja is now the starting center (!) and despite only scoring 4-6 points every game, she sits less than two minutes total each game.

Freshman:  Millie's crew hit a snag on their season of destruction, getting upset by the Lake Lehman girls, 32-22.  Considering the Lehman 7th and 8th graders were destroyed by our B-Team by a combined score of 55-20 last year, we've got to chalk it up to horrible shot selection and a shooting percentage under 20%.  Millie is comfortable in her point guard role, leading the team in assists.

7th/8th Grade:  Some of the girls are complaining about playing time, but when THE point guards for either team miss a game, it's a disaster on all other fronts.   7th Grade is holding onto a .500 record, and 8th grade is struggling at 1-6.

Rec League Travel Team:  The 6th grade Rec League Travel Team went up to Lake Lehman for the Back Mountain Holiday Tournament and finally pulled away with a win in exciting overtime fashion, 17-14!
