Another Month of New Gaming (August 2025)

It might be the heat, the post-convention drain, the lack of spending money, but the vast majority of items being solicited by Alliance this month are such utter trash, I'm not listing them, and there are a few items I do list where I question the creator's sample.

(Gamma World) Not a Test #87 - A Door Without Hinges

Our heroes, the De Facto Explorers,  are ready to leave Riverbend yet again, but first they will investigate Lathar's ladyfriend, Thunnelda's latest discovery in the wilderness.

=================

Sneaky Pete: A mutated weasel scout.  Pete's telepathy and night vision take a backseat when he whips out his electrical powers.

Sonny Helianthus: a nearly 10' tall sentient sunflower artifact examiner with trusted Restorationist ties. Knowledgeable,  but not a good one with device repairs or upgrades. Just went out of his comfort zone to rescue Lathar from becoming a human sacrifice to "The Beast."

Slitheran Wurmtail (aka Squiggles): a mutated earthworm scout, in impromptu power armor, looking for trouble, and finding it often.   He  has been subject to genetic testing and developed super-human strength, a more human body, and a thick coat of shaggy white hair.

Lathar Bracken: A pure-strain human from River Bend.  He's got the muscle, the face, and a mount for most encounters.  Lathar's trusty beast of burden, No Name, travels wherever he does.   Looking for trouble in all the right places.  Former jousting champion of Fair-Town.

Thunnelda Haycock:  A peculiar local woman, who has a penchant for wandering the surrounding territories for particular oddities, and possibly could be winning the heart of Lathar.

================================================================

The Explorers had wandered the wilderness for the better part of two days.  Thunnelda Haycock, Lathar's new ladyfriend, had a penchant for "hinge walks,"  meandering the woods until she found ruins and trying to recover and restore any hinges that survived the Great Disaster.  Except this time she came running back to Riverbend with a new find "a door with no hinges."

Everyone knew exactly what she meant, so the next morning, everyone embarked on the journey to retrace the woman's steps.

"I just hope I can find where I re-hid it," she admitted a day and a half into the journey.

Finally, they arrived at a copse of trees.  Within the growth was an obvious rectangular patch of dead moss.  Thunnelda removed the moss, revealing a steel door at about a 30-degree angle off the ground, against a small hill.

Sonnny immediately went to work, clearing more growth, and discovering control panels.  The electronics had been damaged from decades of exposure, but the sunflower pulled out his tool kit and tried to repair it.

The rest of the group set up a camp immediately behind Sonny, to watch him attempt to open the door. They quickly regretted it as the door beeped three times and then exploded outward, the whole group (except Pete) took shrapnel.

Thunnelda:  Ow!  That's why you need hinges... for safety!"

After recovering, Sonny crawled over to find a set of tiled steps leading down from where the door once existed.

The group lit torches and wandered down the steps and into an otherwise empty and long hall.  The hallway ended at a metal gate, with blue sparks occasionally sparking where it met the floor.   Lathar quickly sprayed his waterskin at the gate, causing a flurry of sparks for a moment... and then the sparking stopped.

Finally getting the gate opened, the Explores entered a large room, full of ancient computers, monitors, and tables. Most of the items had significantly deteriorated, but only some were concerned that the there were a few paths perfectly cleared of debris.

A search discovered a number of paper files, most damaged by water and mold.    Lathar found a motherlode and his delicate fingers peeled back the pages.

Thunnelda:  What is it Sweetie?

Many pages could not be read, but quickly Lathar was reading sections aloud:

"Toard Jakey Research and Development."

Sonny:  "Toard Jakey is where we got the Alchemical Laser"

Squiggles:  "The CHILDREN'S Alchemical Laser.  Imagine how powerful the full version is."

There were numerous ways out of the room, so Sonny focused first on another "hinge-less" door.  He had much better success with the undamaged and barely illuminated keypad on this door.  After some considerable time it opened up to reveal an oversized closet.  Old metal file cabinets, covered in rust, moss, and mold were filled with more damaged files, and a number of ancient devices Sonny couldn't get his head around.  He probably couldn't figure those out because he was much more intrigued with an odd Ancients device lit up on the floor and up to three feet on the floor.

Pete:  "These are charging stations of some sort.  Definitely not for power cells"

While the others were inside this large storage closet, it was the normally astute Squiggles in the back who was surprised.

A small, silent piece of Living Metal on tracks, flailing two operating tentacles in multiple directions.  Despite fighting off the tentacles, Squiggles dove over a broken table to make space, and alert the others.

Guardian of the Toard Jakey's Lair.
Thunnelda was the only victim of the Living Metal's zealousness, earning a cut down her cheek.  In response, the other pulled out point blank blaster rifles, obliterating the device.

Cleaning up the smoking wreckage, and applying some salve to the minor cut, Sonny further searrched the closet, accidentally setting off a tear gas grenade!

Sonny was blinded, but everyone withdrew from the room, shutting the door, and  proceeded to investigate the rest of the facility.  After some experience with the risk/reward associated with it, they avoided rooms dominated by, or at least obscured by the plants, lichen, and mold.

Diving deeper into the facility, they blew away more of these annoying Living Metal,  uncovered an old recording device and uncovered two facts:  (1) Something violent happened in the facility in ages past,  but (2) outside of a small room with a few odd skeletons, there were no other bodies....

Obtaining a key card from a stashed backpack, they were able to access another sector of the facility, with a giant clear-walled empty tank, and an obvious observation/control room beside it...

Next: Gamma World goes on hiatus during #RPGaDay , although their will be episodes of the BECMI D&D Adventures in Gulluvia filling more than just Tuesdays in August.  We'll return to Gamma World on September 2nd with episode #88 - The Alchemical Laser

(Gamma World) Not a Test Supplemental - The Ode to Lathar and Thunnelda

 As performed by Sneaky Pete

"Hinged Together"

Verse 1
Oh, Thunelda, you’re the strength that I need,
Like the iron on these hinges, you’re steady indeed.
When the world is breaking, you hold your line,
Just a girl from Riverbend, forever entwined.

Chorus
We’re hinged together, swingin’ free,
From the east to the west, it’s just you and me.
Every open door, every closing sound,
Thunelda and Lathar, where love’s unbound.

Verse 2
With the rust and the grind of life’s heavy door,
You’ve taught me to fight, you’ve shown me there’s more.
These hinges might creak, and they’ll sometimes bend,
But with you, Thunelda, they’ll never end.

Bridge
Through battles and storms, and glow-sickness too,
I’ll hold strong to these hinges, and I’ll hold on to you.
From broken bolts to splintered wood,
With each turn of the key, love’s understood.

Chorus
We’re hinged together, swingin’ free,
From the east to the west, it’s just you and me.
Every open door, every closing sound,
Thunelda and Lathar, where love’s unbound.

Verse 3
So here’s to the hinges that hold us tight,
To the doors we’ve opened in the dead of night.
My Thunelda, my anchor, my iron grace,
Together, forever, in our hinge-embrace.

Outro
Yeah, we’re hinged together, swingin’ free,
With the strength of love, that nobody sees.
From the first creak to the last soft sound,
Thunelda and Lathar—forever bound.

Thunnelda Haycock, a very hinged woman

Tom Lehrer (RIP)

Tom Lehrer passed away on Saturday, at 97 years of age.

I'll be honest, I was originally aware of him through Dr Demento, although I've come to appreciate his entire catalog... (which is all put in the public domain, by him years ago!)

HMGS Next Gen at Historicon

The eternally greying hobby which is historical wargaming, and by extension, HMGS, has finally discovered social media.

The HMGS Social Media Director was in their "Instagram Era" for Historicon.  The number of pictures, posts, and topics covering a wide of swath of the convention was quite prolific.

While John Spiess' Castle Siege and Cog Wars games caught their attention, I'll point out that the beloved Next Gen "Gnomes and More" table was right next to him

Of course, I might focus on the far table a big more.

Thursday's Gnome Wars Trench Game (19 of 16 slots filled - 119%)

A rare appearance of the "Gnome King" Jim Stanton as a measly player.

Friday - Fistful of Lead - Galactic Heroes - The Defense of Carf  (17 of 16 slots filled - 106%)

And our Saturday Gnome War/Fistful of Gnome games centered around the village of Santa Poco
(18 of 16 - 113%)

HMGS President Jon Lundberg was a true mensch helping with, but also having a great time with the kids. He did all that, and technically had the most victory points (and not off the kids either!)

The table events for Maja and myself generated 56 players out of 48 available player slots (117%)

Then throw in the two gnome mega-games (26 players out of 20 slots 130%)

And then combine the two jousts  (34 out of 25 - 136%)

That's 116 players (125% table capacity and 297 player-hours for an honest calculation).

Not too shabby.

(Painting) Cultists of the Mystic Shackle

As I've completed some bigger projects to finally kick off Season 4 of our pulp game, it made sense to stuff on the painting bench that I'll need to future sessions.

We'll start off with some obvious cultists of some sort:

I picked these guys up from Alchemist's Cove in Schuylkill Haven, PA two years ago, as well as a same number of zombies.  They're plastic-y, so I'm unsure if they're resin, plastic, 3-D printed, or cast.  I don't see any mention of their miniature lines they carry on the website, but they were super-affordable, and they'll do well as close-combat cultists.

With no other immediate project, I broke out the Star Wars figures from last years' flea market at Fall-In!    I'm still working on removing pennies and washers off of some of figures.

There's a few Endor rebels that might just need some touch-up and a rebase, but most are full projects.

Except the bartender from the Mos Eisley Cantina Boxed Set (WEG 40309) and Mos Eisley Cantina blister (WEG 40451)
SW-90 Cantina Bartender
For a figure more likely to be used as an objective than anything else, I simply glued the penny base to the 25mm MDF and flocked it, counts as a refurb.  He already made his debut at Historicon as the objective "Drunk Uncle Lars".

Star Wars Minis:  78 out of the 146 figures from my flea market purchase are painted or refurbished.  More than half!

Project 350:  Getting this in before the month-long #RPGaDay skews all the number.  I'm extremely happy I'm down to 458 (284 drafts /174 scheduled posts)  from 462 (286/176) before.  August is normally dedicated solely to the projects (Last August I only had 6 posts not related to #RPGaDay, and about 8 days of catch-up posts. I mentioned last time, my backlog only goes up 2-5%, although this year I won't be posting  any scheduled AARs or painted miniatures.

My Top 25: As Project 350 goes on hiatus for August, it's as good a time as any to gab about my Top Ten for the Year (October 2024 - September 2025).  Obviously, my Historicon post went up this week, and it's already my #1 post for the year, with my initial announcement of the Historicon Even List cracking the Top 25.  With two new popular posts, it's no surprise my other posts dropped in the Top 25, but I am amused the five posts that moved up.

  1. Historicon 2025 (Obviously)
  2. Event List for Historicon 2025 (As people searched for events)
  3. So Many Jawas  (Only 3/4 of my Jawa horde appeared at Historicon, but it was epic)
  4. (Gnome Wars) The Great Snail - The snail returned in our Saturday 8pm game.
  5. (Gamma World) Servants of Sirinx - An oddity, until you realize is the AAR of the Fistful of Lead Wasteland Warriors game from Historicon 2024 that uses the Gamma World characters.
Some statistical anomalies or coincidences?  I'm not sure.

Open Warfare/Skirmishing:  None
Intrigues:  Korpostes is trying to marry his widowed daughter Dianna to Prince Mydas of Arzawa.
Demi-Humans:  small groups of all demi-humans across the Empire, nymphs
Magickal Devices:  A huge collection of magic items from over the centuries, including the Book of Doom, the Legion of Shadows, the Cholchian Vendomorts, the Phrophry Tableau, the Purple Sky Staff and notable Swords of the Wyrm. The Imperial Palace itself may store a dozen different artifacts, waiting for the right time to use them.

Thumbnail Sketch:
The Barthey Empire is rumored to be older the first Ferasean Empire, although it has been part of the Ferasean lineage by diplomacy or by conquering.  Barthey City is old, like Khemmet and Parthia.  Barthey fully converted to Akana during the 2nd Ferasean Empire, and while most of their territory is technically in the Palu Eu, Barthey prides itself on being the protector, the wall holding back the eastern masses from the civilized world of Akana.

The Straits of Byalbik is the a significant waterway, not only the connecting the Mer Kasp with the MerMed and far-off lands, but also the boundry between the continent of Talaishia and the Palu Eu.  Barthey's navy is concentrated in this region, and it's rumored that the great colossus known as the Titan of Akana, stands over Barthey City and can warn the populace of trouble in the waters.

Since the fall of the Second Ferasean Empire, the country has splintered, starting with Oliva, but most notably Marakeikos and Treibezond.  The other dominions within the Palu Eu portion of the empire strive for more sovereignty, especially after the War with the Master in 1135.

When a coalition of desert raiders from Yarbay, humanoid armies, and the Parthian regulars invaded eastern Barthey under the banner of a secretive individual known only as "The Master", it seemed to spell doom for the empire as a whole.  However, while many credit the adventuring group, the Burning Trogs for traveling and establishing new alliances, and reestablishing old relations, the armies stationed in Treibezond, Arzawa, and Iowones fought valiantly on the land, broke sieges in multiple cities, and actually pushed the Master backed, before they all fled back to the original eastern boundary.  With the passing of the Empress during the war, Emperor Korprostes has had little desire to govern those outside of Barthey, relying on nobles and bureaucrats.
In this environment, the dominions have spent the last decade rebuilding, without a single coin from the treasury to assist, so discussions of independence are spoken casually in public.

The Scholomance of the Eternal Flame is the magic university in Barthey City, across the main thoroughfare from the Throne of Light.  It serves as a center of arcane knowledge, and an additional repository of divine wisdom, blending Akana theology, ancient sorceries, and the finest engineering in the region, into a unique school of magic.

Students and graduates of the school are put to work, casting everything from basic blessing and curses, to using powerful magicks to repair the walls and further enchant the city.  It was named the Eternal Flame from a  a mystical fire that burns without fuel in its central hall, said to be a shard of divine essence from the dawn of creation.

Our more sensitive travelers might need to be advised that most imaginable forms of slavery are legal within the empire.  Do not be surprise if you discover that a well-to-do business is operated entirely by well-fed and cared for slaves, and down the street is some of the most despicable treatment imaginable to other beings.

While the army is large and competent, both in Barthey City and the dominions, the Emperor has his own private army, The Wyrmguard.  Composed generations ago from wandering warriors from Wyrmanl, Pohjola, and other northern lands, they are the elite guards of the realm, not only ensuring the safety of the Emperor, but anything else required from supporting bureaucrats
The Wyrmguard, arriving at another assignment

Geography of Note:

Three major dominions of Barthey in the Palu Eu

Arzawa  - Capital: Ancyra  Ruled by: Prince Mydas

Iowones   - Capital: Arna  Ruled by: Komes Hector

Melonia  - Capital: Sardon Ruled by: Cnosis Derious

The Titan of Akana:  The colossal statue celebrating Akana, along the Straits of Byalbik.  It's halo glows at comfort, a comfort for sailor and traveler alike.

The Lesser Imperial Palace:  Located on the high hills known as the Golden Bough, the portions of the palace are opened to visitors, other portions are locked away with magical (and very lethal) protections, guarding some of the finest treasures and magicks in the world.

The Throne of Light:  The largest temple of Akana anywhere,  magically illuminated at all times to be a beacon faith to all.

The Veil of the Old Ones:  A vast, eerie, fascinating expanse on the eastern edges of Arzawa and Melonia.  Ghostly apparitions of past armies can be seen marching at dusk.   The ruins of ancients civilizations, some predating Khemmet, appear for days, then disappear without notice.

The Stone Forests of  Arzawa: An ancient woodland where trees have turned to stone, frozen in time by a long-lost curse. Travelers report hearing whispers among the trees, as if trapped souls still linger there.  Even more amazing, the stone trees sprout leaves and the trees slowly grow, perhaps an inch a decade .

The Flaming Lighthouse at Telchinis:  A reconstruction of one of the great lighthouses of the ancient world, it is enhanced with divine fire that never dims.

Gnome Painting Spotlight: Matthew Wayman

It's always great to be at Historicon, run a full slate of Gnome Wars games and catch up and compare notes with the players.

Our Thursday games were static 8-player affairs, so no "Bring-and-Play Rule."  Matthew Wayman's French did not get to see play on the trench table, but it would be foolish not to snap pictures of them on it.

Add another officer, and this is actually two units of French under the revised rules.

(Gamma World) Not a Test #86 - Down Time

Our heroes, the De Facto Explorers,  have returned to Riverbend and now have a new mission across the river.

=================

================================================================

The Explorers sat on the opposite bank of the Big River.  The Hisser delegation had just departed, now part of the greater mutant animal realm of BonParr.  The folks of Riverbend were still welcome to traverse the forests across from their town, but there could be repercussions.

Sonny motioned over to their boatswain, Clover, to take them back across to Riverbend.

Thirty days later...

Sonny relaying the message of the Hissers to the townsfolk non-plussed, no fear, no outrage.  Only Squiggles pushed the town leaders buttons, believing BonParr would send their own undesirables across the river.  After a month of rest and warmer temperatures, the sunflower was finally green and healthy, and his giant nine-foot stature and impressive wingspan demanded a level of respect that he did not have in his early days.

Pete rested back at his riverside lair, occasionally putting in his two cents back in town with the continued construction of the palisade.  With only a skeleton crew working on the palisade, the barrier only potected

Squiggles and his family had been coerced by Pete to continue to dig tunnels under the town, an escape path for Pete.

Lathar spent considerable time with Thunnelda.   He knew of her previous emotional swings, and could overhear whispers of her other acts while he walked down the streets, but when she was with him, Thunnelda seemed juvenile, but stable... and happy.    Thunnelda wasn't always attached to Lathar by the hip, wandering off for a "hinge-quest" out in the surrounding wilderness.

Two weeks later...

The desire to drill within the militia dropped considerably, and the drunkenness had risen.  Most militia were now showing a lack of discipline, many shirking responsibilities on the job to drink. It was no surprise of the response time to an attack in the far inland portion of the town, the sparse neighborhood controlled by black marketer Boson Higby.  Only six perished, as a pod of Sel (or LandSharks) crested the soil and snagged the unwitting.

There was some concern that the Squiggles family and their digging might have alerted the landsharks, but Squiggles himself noted that the worm family would probably be the first target of the beasts, if they needed a tasty snack.

Squiggles agreed to have his family bring stone down into the tunnels for drainage, and odd one-way doors.  All this offspring knew their "Manchi" would leave again, but most enjoyed spending time with him, even if they were digging tunnels and a moat.

Sonny decided an attempt to raise morale in town with a spring celebration, and an odd concept known as the "pot-luck."  It was amazingly successful.

Pete oversaw the final stages of the of the guard tower.  The platform was quite rickety and the roof leaky,  made worse with the makeshift "Spearthrower" that was intended for No-Name, now protecting the whole town.  Pete cluttered the platform even more by installing one of the warning gongs on there.
The Spearthrower

Pete also influenced Sonny and Lathar to point out some motivated and charismatic militia to get promoted and undercut the authority of Captain Loman Streight.

Lathar took advantage of his free time to train the militia on using the Spearthrower, focusing on his skills in Military Leadership for training, and convincing them to construct more spears, so they had some at the ready.

Lathar and Sonny picked  Thorn, a medic and practical tactician, Mira Coal, an archer from Fair-Town, and Squiggles' worm child, Poppy to reorganize parts of the militia.

Mira Coal.
Meanwhile, travelers came into Riverbend. merchants plying their wares, outsiders looking for supplies, and even a small group of mutant badgers from BonParr who crossed the river.  While many, especially Pete, were suspicious, they creatures were on their best behavior, buying some items with legitimate domars, drinking in the taverns, and telling tales about how wonderful BonParr was, even for humans who knew their role.

Pete's paranoia quickly went away around the same time and the badgers' departure.  His merchant friend, Hervetta, had arrived in town, and she had Terleen feathers for him.  It was a few, but enough for Pete to assemble a cape, with Lathar's fault.
Hervetta

The consensus of the Explorers was Riverbend was finally somewhat secure... best yet, no townsfolk were asking any of them to do anything extraordinary, Now a trip to Fair-Town was in order.  Intelligence from KIA wasn't getting upriver to Riverbend, it was time to re-visit the Bug-Mart, plus the jousts and other tournaments were starting up soon.

As Pete was trying to convince Lathar to joust yet again, for the sake of his own sanity, Thunnelda returned from another of her "Hinge-Quest"   The other Explorer did not verbally make note that Lathar showed a twinge of ... relief upon her arrival.

Thunnelda ran up to the group, "Lathar... my beloved..."

Lathar, "Yes, my Love..."

Thunnelda:  I think I found something.  What does it mean if there is a door with no hinges....?

GM Notes:  With the way healing works in Gamma World, and my desire to keep the White Hand as scarce resource in this area, it was well overdue to handwave weeks of gameplay to get the crew up to their appropriate power levels.  Including a reference to merchants moving, individual mobility, and even an attack that they could do nothing to stop.

Historicon 2025

Another July, another Historicon!  I'm trying to to type this up Monday morning sore, probably still dehydrated, but otherwise in good spirits after a long and glorious weekend!

Personal stuff to get out of the way:  My daughters and their mom recently moved to Upstate New York, but I've had eldest daughter Maja for most of July, as she finishes her social obligations in Pennsylvania (grad parties, filling in for the local volleyball team) as well as taking over my living room.  The plan was to leave for Historicon Wednesday, run seven games (5 for me, 2 for Maja), and then drive back Wilkes-Barre to finally hand her off to her mom on Sunday.

We made great time, even if we took to scenic route by way of Reading to use up a gift card to a local frozen yogurt that Maja had gotten years ago.

The heck with price creep with miniatures, froyo is outrageously expensive.  I'm assuming tariffs on sprinkles.

We arrived after dinner, got a spot on Level 4 of the attached parking garage and both of us managed to check in registration in one minutes.

The army of orange-clad HMGS volunteers eager to serve the oncoming horde.

Wednesday did have a number of games, all well-attended that I saw.    We checked into the hotel, absconded with a barrage cart, and lugged our gaming crates to our permanent location in the Commonwealth Foyer, at the base of the escalator.

Thursday morning:  Maja dragged me out of bad to use this thing called the Jim?  Maybe it was Fitness Center?  Needless to say, the objects are very heavy, and the jogging path goes nowhere!

After showering, we took a walk over to breakfast at La Dolce Vita with Maja grabbing her favorite macaroons at Bistro Barberet

Thursday I ran two games of Gnome Wars on our trench table, with the Gnome King himself, Jim Stanton running the "Bring Your Own Gnome Army" mega-game at 7pm that night.

The Swiss Engineers were not humoring the California demands to more environmental regulations

A few key artillery hits early one, and the defenders became sparse and panicked.

However, the German advanced halted in the craters with the trenches within reacd.

The Sikhs find a hole in the wire... and a lack of pointy hats in one spot of the trenches, and advanced.

The fabled Red Maxx unit reaches the trench, and stiff resistance from the Swiss

Game one was a success.  A unit of Sikhs had seized the end of the trench line, making for an amusing set-up for the afternoon slot.  One hot dog and a quick zoom around the dealers later, and I was ready for game two.

Second game, second sell-out, and we even had a special guest appearance by some fearful Russian reinforcements.

For dinner, we kept it close, if not fast, and went to Plough inside the hotel.  Rumors of expanded bar hours made many staying in the hotel joyful.  Food was good, service erratic, although we amused ourselves watching the upcoming musical act that night  pose throughout for what we guessed was social media.
She can drive, and still order a hamburger, ketchup only.
Thursday night I snapped up a bunch of pictures, before settling in as a reinforcement for Jim Stanton's big gnome game.

I'll mention this later, but the lighting in some areas seemed far worse than previous years.

Friday:  Hit the gym thing first thing in the morning.  It did not hit back as hard.  Sent Maja out for something from the French bakery.  They were empty before 9.  I survived on a breakfast sandwich from the kindness of Next Gen friends.   Gone was the trench line, replaced by a motley assortment of sci-fi terrain as Miss Maja and I ran back-to-back games of Fistful of Lead.

I had procured something like 160 West End Star Wars figures from Wally's at Fall-In, and we've been painted about half of them, along with a random assortment of resin cast, 3-D printed, and Amazon packaging materials for new buildings for the town of Carf.

For her first time running the system, she handled the system and seven players well.  I tried to keep myself occupied with running the special events on the table and not interrupting her.  She got me in-line the first half-hour and we were well set-up for the continuation in my afternoon game.

Lunch was pizza from the place in South Market. Palatable but below average.  They've usually been better.

The five-year old me screamed to have this all the awards.

My afternoon game of Fistful of Lead was full and continued the chaos.  Between the third rate Star Wars characters, the crew of Firefly, and Space Gnomes, and even Santa Claus, fun was had by all, even after the Gnomish Asteroid Miners kill Megatron and send him tumbling off a building onto his Jawa minions (Hey, it's a generic system... if I've painted it recently, it was on the table!).
I mean... why not?

I do not remember eating dinner...  I know Maja ended up Door Dashing Wingstop and being content with the world.

Friday night was our double Joust?  I had confirmed our events with Jim, to avoid the pleasant harassment from our own Next Gen team, and the Historicon events coordinator.  Maja and I would cover the morning and afternoon session Thursday through Saturday, and I put the Joust under my name 7pm Friday.

About a month ago, I perused the events on Tabletop and happened to notice a second joust, this one under Jim's name at 8pm.

Despite my protests and concerns, nothing was done with this... and we managed a 16-player, kid-heavy tournament in 80 minutes for 7pm, and the 18-player "grown-up" joust, staring at 8:25pm, in just over an hour.    I believe our winners were 7 years old and 51, respectively.  The dear reader can make their own guess as to which one I actually won!

A good late night of libations with friends later...

Saturday:

....and I still showed up to the gym early to get the lead out and start re-hydrating.   A breakfast sandwich from Kom Essa (aka: "The Mennonite Girls" from the Lancaster Central Market) and I was ready to be a fill-in player for Maja's Gnome Wars game on the Old West table, brought up by good friend and contributor to the blog, Mike Lung.

My debut as the Kemper Missouri Medical Militia, was short-lived, as I gleefully took over a side-game with a few younger kids that wanted to play.  While the German Gnomes were rushing to save the Crown Prince and his favorite riding bunny from the hangman's noose, Blazing Saddles style, I conducted a search at the far end of the board, looking for the Crown Prince's lost collection of ducks.

That led by my chaotic Fistful of Lead game in the afternoon.  More players, definitely fewer figures but more zaniness.  My cardinal sin of the convention.  This was the game I was holding off using unit cards, deluding myself that I would base the units of the results of the morning game.

Duck Hunt 2025 was only a minor excuse, but I scrambled to assemble basic four-man units for eleven players.   Huge shoutout to Jon Lundberg, for getting three younger players next to him and being awesome with them (but seriously, when is Jon not awesome).  I owe you a beverage, a meal, and a seat at a table away from (very well-behaved) kids.

I'm still amused that everyone had a good time two copies of the rules were purchased from that game, and NO ONE even came close to achieving the primary objective, retrieving the missing Crown Prince... who was in the unsearched saloon the entire time.

After clean-up, Maja and I wandered down to South Market for chicken sandwiches.... and I staggered upstairs for the greatest 45-minute nap of my life.

While Maja swam in the pool, I wandered back down to play in Jim's big Gnome Wars game, to mostly chill with a beverage or two, but make the big Gnome Wars game debut of the Kemper Medical Militia.  Good thing I designed the sheet and didn't hand it out to another player (my Californians and Mormons are mainstays), as I noticed stat typos!

In the end, the Znombies were vanquished, everyone hates the Irish, loves the magic snail, and I may have solved the Znombie curse at the water source.

After clean-up, a luggage cart was obtained, and most stuff was packed into the car.  A number of crates and boxes were taken out of the car, as I pondered my Sunday.
The Iron Paintbrush was quieter than the Union Band..

Having an ex-wife and two teenage daughters meant no schedule was safe.  I had pondered bring down some stuff to the free Wally's Basement on Sunday, leave mid-morning, take care of yardwork at my Mom's in the Lehigh Valley, and a drive back home to drop Maja off with her mother by mid-afternoon.

Two corrections:  Maja wanted to attend a musical at the local Little Theatre of Wilkes-Barre.  Maja had been in the previous production, and it would be the last time to see a few friends for at least the summer.  Of course I caved.

Let's add that her mother did not come down for the weekend, so I needed to tack on another two hour drive each way to drop Maja off at Newburgh.

Sunday:  NOT a gym day, I snuck down at 7:20 to Wally's to see five or six folks already set up.  I quickly got my stuff down there, and we didn't leave till 10:45.

The main purpose was to possibly sell, or at least get some info on a number of wooden ship kits that the Aunt gave me to sell from my late Uncle's massive model collection.  Got some good info, albeit no bites.  I did manage to get rid of a pile of books and stuff, as well as a solid liquidation of unpainted Pulp figures I'll probably get around to using.   For not sorting them out, I only needed to fish out about a dozen figures from the pile, so that says more about my choice in purchases than anything.

Ninety minutes later (and a much needed Wawa stop halfway there) we made it to Wilkes-Barre, watched the teen/children workshop production of  Descendants, and won the 50/50, which lessened the pain of driving I-84 to Newburgh and back.

Overall:

Lancaster Convention Center:   We've been here enough that I know when to do things, and when not to do things, due to pedestrian traffic.  I avoid the convention center elevator (that goes from Freedom Hall up to the 3rd floor) like the plague, but off hours, I had a few straight shots from the 3rd floor to the dealer hall without any stops.  My old feet were grateful for the few steps avoided.

My previous complaints about lighting palled in comparison to the big games in the hotel lobby.  Even mid-day the lighting for the Test of Honor, 55 Days in Peking, and a WW2 game was horrible.  The flood lamps made things bearable in the darker Commonwealth foyers but I was not a fan of the ones in the hotel lobby.  I think a roaring campfire in the center would illuminate better, and one taller attendee walking through could cause an inadvertent eclipse on the table.  For the quality of the events, it felt disrespectful, despite the initial intent.

Hotel:  The Marriott is great, if you can get in.  Maja swam everyday, I used the gym, and there were not issues with the room.

Parking: I was in the covered section of Level 4 until Saturday night, when I found a spot right next to the shack at the exit.  Correct me if I'm wrong, but Level 4 has a step for the elevator, not a cut out ramp.  Minor inconvenience, but my full cart Wednesday night, meandered down to 3 to used the elevator.
Tournaments: Never my strong suit, but they filled up nicely, even before the alleged 40k tournament took place.

On-site Food:  I know things are getting expensive elsewhere when nine bucks for a hot dog and diet Pepsi didn't make me flinch, and the beer prices around here have become equally obscene.   I did hear one story about the Meatloaf dinner "Borg ship" that I won't relate, but there was at least one.

Vendors:  Biggest complaint?  Our bulk base sellers were not at the con.  I managed to get a sufficient horde of them from Dave's Baggage Train for a bit more, but I think everyone wants to run around with a Chinese container holding bases in it.

Rant:   I enjoyed the historical re-enactors, but could the Union Band not start playing the moment my daughter started explaining the rules to new players?

These guys were much quieter in the vendor hall....
Swag:
  • The aforementioned pound of 1" bases from Dave's Baggage Train.
  • A bottle of Zap-a-Gap (plus a surprise appearance from my friend Dave working that vendor's table, whom I haven't seen in over 20 years)
  • A unit of the new Hawaiian Gnomes from Brigade
  • The Hawaiian Gnome Pineapple Catapult
  • 15 of the American Bears, plus a truck from Billy's Toy Box
  • Five of the old Pondsmith/Eureka Teddy Bears on hobby horses from Wally's
  • The original Critter Commandos from Wally's
Maja was content with her macaroons, some Bad Squidoo figures from Cotton Jim, her theatre tickets, and hanging out with dear old Dad.
