I Was Alive When This Map Was Published

What a drag it is getting old.

Sure I was only one when this map appeared in Kamandi #32, but we are in a world where the kids who graduating high school were born after the Star Wars Prequel Trilogy!  (Not a Star Wars fan?  How about there are kids driving this year who were born after the last Harry Potter book...)

I've had this map saved for my Savage Rifts game that never transpired.  With the Gamma World crew never leaving more than 100 miles from their home base, I doubt I need to pull this out for  any post-apocalyptic hijinks.

46 was rough, 47 wasn't too great either, 48 downright sucked.  Here's hoping 49 gets me smarter and wiser (and just a hair thinner, but no thinning hair).

If you do want to get me anything for this revolution around the sun, if you're an HMGS, your consideration to vote for me for HMGS Board of Directors would be appreciated.

(Kickstarter) Rifts for Savage Worlds - Atlantis Rising

I think I'm passed my mid-life crisis fascination with Savage Rifts is done, but I'm pleasantly intrigued by Pinnacle's expansion of the game with Rifts® for Savage Worlds: Atlantis Rising Kickstarter.

From the Kickstarter itself:
Rifts®: Atlantis and the Demon Seas is a 192-page full-color hardcover sourcebook with new Iconic Frameworks, MARS packages, Edges, Races, and Gear. This Kickstarter also offers an amazing new first for Rifts®—an army of pawns for your table! AND an alluring poster map, two double-sided combat maps, archetype dossiers, and more!

#RPGaDay2019 Day 20: Noble

Day 20 of #RPGaDay brings up the word "NOBLE."

And that brings up sharp recollections of "Why ViscountEric doesn't like Rifts anymore..."

Let's start in the near past.  I pledged for the original Rifts for Savage Worlds Kickstarter.   Nothing crazy just the pdf and hard copy of the Tomorrow Legion Player's Guide.  I figured I like Savage Worlds, warts and all, and I tend to appreciate Rifts, with all its warts, blemishes, and pre-cancerous skin tags.  Upon receipt of the PDF and all the other cool stuff that came along, Savage Rifts was always on the back burner of something I wanted to run.

Heck, I even wrote out a mini-campaign using old war comics as the basis fro the plot, leading into a fun East Coast campaign that dabbled with A.R.C.H.I.E., Atlantis, and a bit of a Logan's Run feel mixed in for fun.

Yet, at the last local game convention, my hardcopy of Savage Rifts and the small collection of Rifts books, went into the charity auction, a victim of a mini-gamer purge.

Why? I blame my Cyber-Knight.

Circa 1991 or '92, at least one of us in our high school group bit the bullet and purchased the original Rifts rulebook.  We rolled up the regular retinue of characters, and if I remember right, our friend Charles ran a scenario introducing... the Mechanoids....

It's safe to say that we encountered the Mechanoids near an abandoned farm and the regular Rifts slugfest occurred.

Except I was playing a cyber-knight, good guy, MDC armor, psychic sword.  As we neared the traditional farmer's barn, I had my first moment of calm in the fight and decided to dash through the barn to make sure (a) there wasn't something we could use in the fight and (b) make sure no civilians were in the area.

Low and behold, both my hunches were right.  The neighboring community was hiding an MDC weapon to protect them in the barn and that same community was huddling next to it because when stuff got real, they gathered their senses at the last minute.

I spent the rest of the combat fighting off the Mechanoids, and keeping the barn from collapsing on the very delicate SDC civilians.

In the end I remember Charles doling out xp at the end of the session, coming to me, and essentially saying, "You get max role-playing credit.  You were the only one to do something heroic and in character."

Therein lies the greatest flaw with Rifts.  It's not the system.  It's not MDC vs SDC.  It's not the power creep.  It's essentially players wanting a four hour long Voltron episode, except just fighting.  It honestly feels worse than traditional hack'n'slash dungeon crawls with D&D.

And I hoped with Savage Worlds, I'd see more characters like my Cyber-Knight, wanting to help people/their group/even themselves.  But as I saw the actual plays videos, as I saw the write-ups, as I listened to the podcast, I kept seeing cheesy character building segment, COMBAT, segue-way into next cheesy character building segment, followed by more COMBAT!  The game simply degrades to collateral damage the RPG.

I know, I know, I'm the antithesis of any Rifts player you ever saw in your FLGS, but the world looks fun enough to play some low level, boots on the ground, but not all Rogue Scholar type gaming.

In the context of another game, I think I want Rebels vs Stormtroopers, rather than Star Destroyers.

I haven't given up hope entirely yet.   I still have the pdf of the SW book and all of the other downloadable, plus Rifts books go through the local con auction scene pretty cheap (and if they aren't, Palladium still has some crazy affordable prices.).

I might need to introduce Rifts as a cool Post-Apocalyptic setting without the key elements like Glitter Boys and Baby Dragons that make Rifts the game everyone can love and despise at the same time.

(Kickstarter) Savage Rifts North America Collection

My love for Savage Worlds and Rifts might have waned, but it is excitement for three new books now on Kickstarter: Rifts for Savage Worlds: American Armageddon
  • Arcana & Mysticism: Explores the Federation of Magic, Psyscape, and Techno-Wizard enclaves throughout North America, and the dire threats hiding within.
  • Blood & Banes: Details the struggle of dark heroes against the alien Xiticix Hivelands, encroaching Vampire Kingdoms, mysterious Dinosaur Swamp, and insanity of Madhaven.
  • Empires of Humanity: Brings to life the wonders of human civilization from the Coalition States to the New West, and uncovers the secrets of the east coast.
All three books are 192 pages, hardback, and full-color throughout!

#RPGaDay 2017 Day 31: What Do You Anticipate Most From Gaming in 2018?

We wrap up #RPGaDay 2017 looking towards the future:

"What Do You Anticipate Most From Gaming in 2018?"

Short Answer: Friendship is Online

Long Drawn-Out Answer:  I'm a quirky fellow that has tracked my all of my gaming since a Paranoia game in the Summer of '89.  To make it even odder I've tracked my "Gaming Years" from October to September of the following year, so this question is nearer in my mind that most who are currently trying to find time to play the latest GenCon releases between now and Christmas.

What do I plan on running for my 2018 "fiscal year"?

Counting down to #1:
  • #4 Savage Worlds Pulp - Season 3 of the Pulp game I run with my girls is scheduled to start in January, simply to accommodate my wargaming responsibilities, a desire to purchase new terrain, and a chance to run some different stuff this Fall.  The game will return to Egypt, with a few side-treks to jolly old England and perhaps a secret lair.  Will the characters heed the warnings that you "Don't Mess With the Zola?"
A return to Urban Intrigue...
  • #3 Savage Mousling Fantasy - I've got a number of Mousling-themed scenarios for the girls, hence the push back of the Pulp game.
  • #2 My Little Pony: Tails of Equestria RPG -  I'm targeting a lot of MLP RPG with the girls, for more "Theatre of the Mind" role-playing, and so I can run demos it for most of Mepacon.  It is the one game Maja really wants to run, so I'll encourage that as much as I can.
  • #1 Online Gaming -  We're just a few sessions into a 5th Edition D&D game on Roll20, but online gaming will probably become my go -to for dealing with "grown-up" gaming.  5th Edition D&D, Classic D&D, maybe expanding into Savage Rifts and Hackmaster. Still too new at this for long-term planning, but locking myself in the office for a few hours on Monday night, Yuengling Black and Tan in hand, has set some relaxing tones in the past few weeks.

Mandatory Holiday Swag Post 2016

Another crazy Christmas has come and gone.  There are piles of toys EVERYWHERE and the last three days of rain might not be enough to contain the size of my burning pile.
But enough about American Girl dolls, karaoke machines, and tablets more powerful than mine.   The big question everyone's asking is "ViscountEric, What did YOU get for Christmas?"
Socks...   I got a boatload of socks.
The last two years, I've given my wife a want list to fill at the FLGS, and a straight Amazon wish list.  The local list was a near disaster, as the order barely arrived by dinnertime Christmas Eve.  The Amazon wishlist was insanity, as my dearest ordered all of it, and I've barely gotten through a third of it.
This year my list was pretty simple:
I got my necessary undergarments, but I did get a few other things....
  •  Rory's Story Cubes for Action, Voyages, Clues, Prehistoria, and a double dose of Enchanted.  My wife may have gone a bit overboard, but the kids love it.
  • Munchkin Pathfinder
The rest derived from my predilections for Kickstarters.   I had four pending delivery for October through December, so I figured relying on those to add to the "fun" at Christmas.    Reaper Bones 3 was then delayed into Spring 2017 and the Songs of Blades and Heroes campaign might be in the mail right now.   That left me with Golden Goblin's Tales of the Caribbean for Call of Cthulhu and The Tomorrow Legion's Player's Guide for Savage Rifts.

To top things off, I held the Brigade Games' Arab Revolt figures I picked up at Fall-In! for Christmas, just so I had some stocking stuffers.  I also picked up two packs of Pulp Figures:  Weird Villans and Dangerous Dames I.

Considering my wife ordered half of her own Christmas presents, and we loved everything we got, I consider this Christmas a win!

Time to base the figures, make up some Rifts characters, and roll some story cubes!
