I thought the cartoon below would coincide with my emotions about returning to fact-to-face gaming with my gaming group. Even you're a practical adult, COVID restrictions have sucked, and with regional upticks we're still *this close* from being able to return safely for the safety of all families involved.
Then I get a reality check. It wasn't like we were playing anything consistently prior to the world ending in March 2020. In fact, the last role-playing we did on a regular basis was our long-running Call of Cthulhu game, and the last full session together, the epic assault on Grey Dragon Island to culminate Masks of Nylarathotep, occurred prior to September, 2016!!!! From that point we wrapped up the campaign with some Play By E-Mail (PBeM) and within a few months we were playing 5e on Roll20.Heck, I thought our last non-family, non-con gaming session with my pals could have been a Delta Green playtest we partook in... but that was 2014. Sigh.
Can we even justify getting the group back together. One player was disappeared, another fell off the radar, but is still close by, another is in a worse COVID hell than anyone I know, yet another is going through medical issues, and the final one got divorced and is still going through tough times financially and with visitation rights.
Here's hoping the kids watching the awesomeness of "Hellfire" in Season 4 of Stranger Things might help jumpstart some face-to-face play at home, especially with weekends becoming free for the summer.
