(Gnome Wars) The Swiss Bicycle Tank is (Finally) Complete?

Last month I had begun the process of doing more than just futilely straightening up the painting bench and shelves:  A complete reorganization of the paints and bits that are strewn here and there.  I'll eventually post about the new arrangement and it's efficiency, but one of the bits I uncovered was a wind-up key, something you would use for a wind-up toy.

And the the last piece of my Swiss Park Ranger Bicycle Tank that I "finished" back in 2010.

First ever picture with the wind-up key (and new lower gun)

Let's be honest, the Eureka Miniatures Hartlebepanzerhochrad has always been the default Bicycle Tank for Gnome Wars.  I had painted mine up for the Swiss Park Rangers so they had some vehicle just in case some of the park visitors were a bit stubborn.

I first mention the completed model in October 2010, but the first picture of it doesn't appear until I finally finished the entire Swiss Park Ranger unit back in July, 2011!

Of course, after 15 years and countless conventions, the Bicycle Tank has seen better days.  I had removed the Picklehaube from the original model, of course, but over the years I lost the lower gun.  Every part I hard was either way too big or way to thin, so I simply clipped off some of the metal guard of a ruined paint brush.  Not pretty at all, but better than the hole.

Mike Broadbent - RIP

It with sadness to report the passing of sculptor Mike Broadbent.

I know Mike best from his work on the Teddy Bear line, prominently sold by Eureka over the years.  Mike sold the line around a decade ago, and things have been in limbo ever since.

For the last few years, he had been selling his work through Slave2Gaming.  It's quite amusing stuff.

(Painting) Middle Eastern Civilians Part Two

With Historicon on the horizon, I was so close to finishing the Eureka Middle Eastern Civilians, but alas I only got six complete.  Now, the other six are complete and I have some "regular folk" for the Pulp Game.

All Twelve
On the painting bench is A LOT.  I have cleaned and based all of my Historicon purchases, plus I have a very special announcement cluttering up most of my work space.  Details are forthcoming.

(Painting) Arab Civilians by Eureka Miniature, Part 1

After clearing off the German Schutztruppe from my table, I'm moving a bit faster, getting six minis done out of the dozen Middle Eastern Civilians from Eureka Miniatures that come in the pack.

I'm rather impressed with my purchases from Cold Wars in March.  Compared to the year-long ordeal of the German Schutztruppe sitting on my painting bench, knocking out some mdf buildings, these civilians, and getting my Samoan Fita-Fita primed and in line to be painted, the Cold Wars haul was very productive.  Heck, even my abortive foray in the flea market netted me figs, terrain, and random board games I've used over the last few months.  Let's hope this weekend in Historicon works out just as well.
I guess the best news is, after I finish the other half-dozen, I'll have plenty of villagers to populate the town for the Pulp.  What happens to them is a whole different story.

Next up:  Part 2 of the Arab Civilians, I'm doubling down my efforts to finally get the Arab Revolt painted, and in a fit of excitement, my Samoa Fita Fita get pushed up in the queue.

Eureka Miniatures Pulp and Pax Gorillas

The Eureka Miniatures Facebook randomly dropped a few pictures of their Pulp and Pax Gorillas with a "Coming Very Soon."

(Painting) Trees and a Mouse

While I managed to keep my normally prolific post rate on the blog and snuck two pulp games into an normally chaotic month, my painting has suffered.    With Fall-In! in a week and the mouse fantasy games for Mepacon in two, it's crunch time in the Kriget Rum.

Here's the pathetic output thus far this month:

First off, I keep finding (#%!%!!@ trees to paint up from the dinosaur and toy soldier playsets.

I believe that all cheap, plastic terrain has been painted up.

With the bevy of mouse creatures to paint for Mepacon, it's pretty pathetic that I've only knocked out one of the easier ones, a lone  Mice Warrior from Eureka.

A bad size comparison between an old crouching Grenadier fig and the Mice Warrior.
Next:  A few critical Mouslings for the con game, a pulp figure or two, plus more Blue Martians!

Cthulhu Investigators and... MICE WARRIORS!

I'm still uncomfortable that I've had this strange phenomena known as time these past two weeks.  Painting and a beverage have been a nice way to end the evenings, although I'm still working off that discount case of Stegmaier Winter Warmer.   Outside the beer being shaken prior to my purchase in March, it's still maintaining a quality flavor.

After getting my first figures done just under an arbitrary wire.  This week I made a breakthrough and finished what I consider "Cthulhu/Pulp Wave 2."  Again, a mixture of Metal Magic "Dunwich Detectives", Pulp Figures, and the new RAFM 7th Edition Call of Cthulhu figs.

Dale (Metal Magic), Hayden (Pulp Figures), and the mysterious stranger (Metal Magic)

There's something fishy about that guy....
You don't often see the back ends of the minis, but in this case, they all came out splendid (if the spray sealant was just a wee bit too close and frosty).    I usually avoid all things Games Workshop with fire and a hail of bullets, but he Citadel Seraphim Sepia works just as well as it did at the mini-painting tutorial at the FLGS.   I will be getting another pot of it soon.
A little frosty, but well-sealed.
Sharing the "evil bad guy role" with the Purple Necromancer and Lieutenant Colonel Thaddeus Ovaltine in my kid's Savage Showdown pulp game is Dr Robert Huston from Masks of Nylarathotep.  Dr Huston will be assuming the mad scientist/alchemist/modern cult leader the next few episodes will need.   Penelope may just be the innocent bystander I didn't know I needed until just now...

Dr. Robert Huston (RAFM) and Penelope (Metal Magic)
With "Wave 2" out of the way, I begin turning my attention to the mouslings, starting with two non-mouslings, specifically Warrior Mice from Eureka Miniatures.

Pretty basic figures, great for bulk troops for a Mouse Guard game.  Very little fur made it harder than normal to shade gradation's in the fur.

Two mice down for my Cold Wars game, at least fifty to go...

Next:  Mouslings and Gnome Sikhs, plus a return to the Blue Martians and more $#%@!$#%@ terrain!

(Gnome Wars) The Amphibian Empire

The Amphibian Empire  by Mike Lung

Although the Gnoman Empire started its capital city Gnoman, through conquest and expansion it  grew to a huge size and is made up of numerous races and cultures.   Over time, many of these races and cultures were granted full citizenship, others remain slaves or vassals.   Because of its huge size, the empire was divided into two parts.  The western part including Gnome and all the western provinces are commonly also called the Western or Gnoman Empire and eastern part known as the Eastern or Ursalian Empire.

(In the East the western half is commonly known as Ursa Minor and the eastern half as Ursa Major.
Since the western half is dominated by gnomes, this naming highlights the West’s feelings that the East (ruled mainly by bears) is arrogant and presumptuous.  Although in theory, both empires are close allies and are often referred to as equal brothers, the relationship between the two empires is sometimes tenuous and periodic wars erupted over border disputes, trade rights, and in particular imperial

On the western most border of what was once the Gnoman Empire, across the sea, lay the Amphibian Confederation.  This is confederation is a loose collection of various tribes.  Most are frogs, but aquians (fishmen), crocodilians (crocodiles), turtilian (turtles) and many other tribes exist.  The relationships between the various tribes is complicated, but the share roughly the same cultural background and language.  At times, a strong leader will try to unite the tribes against a common foe.  But this is always a temporary arrangement.  The once unified tribes falling back to their own petty squabbles once the common threat subsides.

The every growing Gnoman Empire has made some strides in conquering the Amphibians.  Under the leadership of Pontificus Manurus (discussed in detail in Pontificus’s own famous history know as The Anura Wars), the gnomes under his leadership conquered the neighboring Dendrobates tribe of frogs after a prolonged and particularly bloody struggle.  The Dendrobates were known for ferocity and their  loud shrill battle cry.  After being pacified and their lands annexed into the Gnoman Empire, the lands of  the Dendrobates became prime recruiting ground s for the Gnoman army.  Some of the best auxiliaries units in the army are Dendrobates legionaries.  Time and time again, these auxiliaries have proved loyal and trustworthy to their Gnoman leaders when fighting against distant enemies.  However, when used close to home against other frogs, Gnoman leaders would be wise to keep a close eye on these units.

Because of the strong Gnoman cultural presence so close to the Amphibian lands, some aspects of
Gnoman culture has begun to spread throughout Amphibian lands.  Although Amphibians have only
rudimentary skills in foraging iron, the use of guns in now common among many of the eastern tribes.

These guns are usually antiquated pieces sold to the tribesman by Gnome traders or captured in raids.    There is even rumors that some tribes posses cannons.  Gnome dress is also beginning to be a common  To the North of the Amphibian Empire, lie the lands of the Saurian Empire.  The saurians are truly  barbaric in compared to the standards of the Gnoman Empire or even the Amphibian confederation.

These warlike tribes are known to sacrifice their captives to strange wicked gods and to eat them in
gigantic banquets.  Attempts to civilize these tribes have mostly failed (with the common result of the
ambassadors or missionaries being eaten!).  Not much is known about Saurian culture other than it is
ancient.  Like the Amphibians, the Saurians are made up of many tribes.  Periodic leadership under a
particularly strong (and huge) Saurian will unite some the tribes into a true Empire.  However, these
small empires rapidly fall apart as soon as the leader dies or is defeated.  The Saurians are aggressive
and, if not for the sea barrier, would constantly test the borders of the Gnoman Empire, Ursalian Empire.

It is said by some that only the constant Saurian internal warfare prevents the Saurian from conquering all others.   It is also rumored that there is a race of Snakemen that secretly manipulate
the Saurians to do their evil bidding.

Pondemonium is Unleashed!

Miciosegone Games has released Pondemonium through Wargame Vault

Pondemonium is a free print 'n' play two-player boardgame/skirmish wargame, made to offer a specific ruleset for the Pond Wars miniatures range from Eureka Miniatures.  The great mobility of Frogs against the impressive defensive ability of Turtles in a Pond battleground of huge variables will keep you company for many matches!

You Can Download All the Components of the Game for Free!
  • The HD English rulebook
  • The low-quality English rulebook (cheapest to print)
  • The Action Cards
  • The Tokens
  • The paper miniatures of Frogs and Turtles
  • The Pond board
  • The English Units sheets
I've downloaded my copy and the rules look relatively quick and painless, although the initiative system needs a couple test runs for me to get it, and  there are some sections that appear as if they were translated from another language, so they're oddly worded.

The big thing that won me over for a free product are the paper minis of frogs and turtles.  The book does state that it is far preferred to get the minis from Eureka (and the one model from Impact Miniatures),  but they're great to experiment with options to use for this game, gnome games, even Song of Fur and Buttons.

We'll get around to playing this during the #30GamesAMonth and there's a good chance a sizable frog/turtle/mouse order will need to be construction for Cold Wars.

Eureka's 28mm Chaos Army

June must be Mordheim Appreciation Month.    My friend Brian has had an itch from out of the blue to play it (and it would have been done too, if I didn't want to decompress with my wife and kids.)

In a similar vein, Eureka Miniatures has announced the release of their Chaos Army figures that would be simply fantastic for Mordheim.

Nothing available from Eureka in the States yet, but they are offering the set for $40 Australian from the main website.

Gnome Wars is Genius in France!

I just started compiling a want list for Cold Wars this March.  Hopefully the PEL will be posted on time and I can go over those before submitting my hard-earned money to *gasp* pre-register.    I won't know what to do with myself for those extra hours I'm not running events...  probably playing in those events.

Anyhoo, while searching for the worksafe link to Brigade Games ( http://brigadegames.3dcartstores.com/ not www.brigadegames.com for my work's filter) I found a fun blog with some painted gnomes frogs and associated models:

http://le-fil-a-plomb.blogspot.fr/

I am disappointed that they stop posting in September.  Even their modelling in 3mm Martian terrain looks interesting.

(Repost) March of the Wooden Soldiers

First off, Happy Thanksgiving everyone!  Even you Canadians that celebrate early can join in the festivities today.

As my workload increased and the days became shorter, I expected my kids to go ga-ga over Christmas stuff, and quite frankly, they're doing it in surprising moderation.

But more than once we've been sitting around the kitchen table and when the subject of holidays come up, my eldest, Maja would say....

"Thanksgiving is the holiday the Pilgrims made.  We eat turkey, watch parades, and we all watch Daddy's special movie with the wooden soldiers."

Reaffirmation that I'm doing something right as a father.

While it was only two years ago that I assembled this, as you sit bloated in your easy chair, watching another blow-out, you can read up on assembling your own game based on March of the Wooden Soldiers.

Post Gorging Edit:  After watching a super excited Maja watch the movie this year, I realized that I neglected the Toyland Police Force, which I believe resemble Napoleonic soldiers with some garish movie flair.  I also realized that I need to start buying Toytown Soldiers from Eureka.   Finally, Zombie Dice is truly the great ice breaker. Now onto SATLOF on Saturday!

Buck's Blog: Toy Soldiers

One of the blogs I follow is written by a gentleman named Buck Surdu.  He's one of the Harford Area Weekly Kriegspeilers (HAWKS) that have a dominant presence at the HMGS con, as well as the author of the Tanga 1914 campaign book that I've used for my GnomeWars Tanga game.

The normal perusing of Buck's Blog is collection of con reports, club games, and some pretty kick-ass vacations with the family.  One of his more recent posts covered his painting up some Eureka Toy Soldiers.  I haven't gotten any yet, but I'm strongly encourage to paint them up to complement my Britains, with enough lacquer to give them an extra 2mm in height.

Eureka Teddy Bears No More

Checking Eureka Minis main site from Australia, I came upon this announcement:

March 15, 2014

MBD sells Teddy Bears

With effect from 15th March, Eureka Miniatures will no longer be producing Mike Broadbent Designs 28mm Teddy Bear range.
We have thoroughly enjoyed retailing and manufacturing these models and wish the new owner Phil Mcinerney every success with the range.

This formerly confirms the news I heard at Cold Wars.  It's a bit sad that Eureka's losing this line.  They're a quality company, so I can't imagine anything creating this arrangement outside of additional financial gain.   Actually, I can, but nothing can be confirmed, so I'll just hope this Phil fellow gets his act together and gets the bears back up pronto.

Eureka Releases 28mm Mogadishu Somalis & African Market

This is the time of year I dread/love.  As I slowly assemble my shopping list for Cold Wars from my tax return, more and more shiney things pop up to catch my eye and dwindle my funds.

Apparently I missed the soft release of the 28mm Mogadishu Somalis and African Market at Fall-in! last year, but they're getting formerly released for Cold Wars this year.

The bare headed Somalis are definitely East African in appearance, althought the masked gunmen can definitely be used elsewhere in the world.

The African market is not only available as a large set, but individual stalls (and appropriate figures) are available as well.   Stalls selling wristwatches are fairly modern, but other stalls have "remain unchanged in marketplaces for hundreds of years" (/end announcer voice).

The six figure packs of gunmen are going for $24.20 on the Eureka USA site, the mob of 8 looks to be $17.60.

The Mike Lung Gallery #23 - The Ambearican Revolution

Not to be outdone by my prodigious output, my good friend Mike Lung has upped his talents and offered up the first glimpses of his Ambearican Revolution.

His new terrain board is a paint and flocked set of foam floor tiles.  Easy to store and interchangable.  He's been furiously painting up a number of unit's from Eureaka's Teddy Bear line.

And with a lack of Hessian bears, I *guess* that gnomes will do....

Nicely done, Mike!

Hopefully we can see some battle reports real soon!

Eureka to Release Afghan National Police for Fall-in!

Part of me is sad that I'll probably miss the dealer hall at Fall-in! this year.  The other part of me sees this release from Eureka and cheers that I won't be tempted to break the family budget over such cool stuff when we have a cruise, Christmas, and some capital projects to save for.

I've had a soft spot for playing anything in modern Afghanistan.  It's about #12 on my list of gaming prorities, but between Eureka's Afghan natives and US Marines, I've snagged a few figures over time.  Now, they're releasing Afghan National Police, just in time for Fall-in!

No prices from the announcement on TMP, but they would work well to represent any well-organized paramilitary unit.

Check out Eureka's website for more info

Eureka's New Teddy Bears and Toy Soldiers

GenCon is here!  Thousands of sweaty gamers pouring into Indianapolis to chuck dice, eat Cheetos, and, if the gods are mericful, perform at least routine personal.  A shout out to Jesse, who already survived a game against the current and a former Munchkin World Champion.  And good luck to Phil, who got a slot in the Cthulhu Masters tournament.  Avoid dynamite at all costs!!!

While everyone else is looking towards Indiana for gaming news, the most exciting news for me came from Australia, specifically Eureka Miniatures' newsletter (Thanks to Mike Lung for forwarding it to me!).

New products for the Roman Teddy Bear/Toytown War I know everyone is itching to fight (all are 25mm):

The Roman Teddy Bear Chariot, All hail, Ben Fur!

$15.55 US  - $17.00AU
Mike Broadbent has also sculpted firing poses for the Toytown Toy Soldiers

The Toy Soldiers with helmet are also available with a firing pose.  Figures are $2.70US/$2.95AU each.

Also a shout out to Grimsby Wargaming for a nice AAR for Sheffield Triples in the UK.  I've stolen their pics of a game using the Eureka ToyTown figs played with Hordes of the Things for rules.

Historicon 2013: Thursday Gnight Gnomes

I may be in a Sheraton outside of Boston this weekend, but Gaming With the Gnomies has spent no expense to send our on-site correspondent Mike Lung to Fredericksburg.

Thursday night was Brian Robinette's (herzogbrian) Frogs vs Gnomes.

Here's the evidence:

(Twelve Days) #1 March of the Wooden Soldiers: The Wargame

I've previously done a post about gaming the movie Wizard of Oz with minis. With this being the first holiday post, I'd like to cover the movie that initiates the holiday season, March of the Wooden Soldiers.

For a few generations within the greater NYC tri-state area and beyond, the tradition was the Thanksgiving Day Parade followed by March of the Wooden Soldiers (originally Babes in Toyland for you moviephile purists). The Laurel and Hardy classic does stand the test of time, as I showed it to my 3 1/2 year old daughter Maja this past month. Even after all these years of the physical comedy, I caught some more high brow grown up humor in the first half hour. Not "adult" humor per se, but something most kids these days won't get.

Let's take a moment and assume that Silas Barnaby has regrouped from his ignominious defeat and has better organized the Bogeymen for a long term war.

Stan, Ollie, and Tom-Tom:  Our heroes should come from a decent Robin Hood line.  Stan should be holding a staff cut down to look more like his pee-wee stick:
www.blackhat.co.uk
Ollie is a Little John figure and Tom-Tom is any of the merry men.

Bo-Peep:  A shepherdess is surprisingly difficult to find, I'll resort to a tougher, wiser version with Tinley from  Reaper Minis:
A little putty and that's a fancy Shepherd's Crook
Villagers and the village:  Regular townsfolk are easily replicated by any bulk peasant set.  Building wise, since most of the structures are single story, there are dozens of providers.  I'd suggest Miniatures Building Authority for larger/classier buildings.  For the giant shoe, I suggest some imagination at your local thrift store.

The Three Little Pigs:  The pigs do have a heroic effort in fighting, but the closest thing I can find are some grotesque looking anthromorphic hogs.  If we have to go that route, lets turn the little piggies a bit more brutish and use some classic pig snout orcs from Architects of War.
When Pork Goes Bad
Cat and Mouse:  Some of the heroes of the first battle, a human sized 25mm house cat just ain't in most catalogs.  Reaper has a number of catgirls, but the closest one is Cheetah Girl.

The Mouse can be one of the Eureka Warrior Mice.  The ears are perfect in a Disney mouse sort of way. The toy zeppelin used for the bombing run may need to be scratch built, but it should be in 1/285th.

The toughest part of assembling a game looks to be the bad guys.

Silas Barnaby:  An old dude in a pilgrim hat with a cane.  Unfortunately the Warhammer Witch Hunters are  younger, caneless, and packing more heat than my favorite part in Split Second.   I found one lonely pic of a good choice online and am wondering if anyone knows where this is from?

The Bogeymen:  I really thought these would be easier to discover. They're beastmen, submen, or wildmen, but nothing even remotely similar are available. Even if there are a figure here or there, these need to be done en masse, so this might be a good time to break out those goblin, hobgoblin, or even bugbear armies.

And as I typed the previous sentence, a quick search for bugbears nets this result from somewhere on www.warseer.com
Not perfect, but they will do.
Again anyone who can id these will win my appreciation.

Finally, the Wooden Soldiers are the easiest of the bunch.  The Eureka Miniatures Toy Town line up not only covers them, but multiple headgear and cavalry.

Edit:  (5/7/2015)  Acheson Creations has just released a Shoe House that's 6 inches high and 6 inches long and should be a great fixture on a Toyland Battlefield.

$25.00
