If You Can Stand Flight, Pick the Right Flight Stand

Outside of playing with model planes in my room as a kid, I've never played anything close to an aircraft wargame.  

So it might not a big surprise that I still haven't found an ideal flight base for one of my early Gnomish Space Marine projects,  the converted Horten HO-347 VTOL.  

Without a solid ruleset to play with, I'm wavering between a impressive clear base, roughly the thickness of a broom handle, or do I find a a sturdy telescoping one to recreate so many cool maneuvers?
